Actually the creators have said they purposely left it vague, never actually confirming if they were in a relationship (within the 1st season) so technically it's so obviously canon but at that same time it's not. Basically the voice actors can not confirm anything that is not said within the show or upcoming movie. (Example: Yuri on Stage was done by the Japanese voice actors where Viktor gets jealous because he thought Yuuri had an ex. The script however is not canon but the voice actors could perform it because it was written by the show runners.)
The comment on how the anime got some people into figure skating is, in my case, true. After I had watched the anime for the first time, I had gotten really into figure skating and watched clips, now figure skating is one of my favorite sports. Also, 16:27, just for future watch-throughs.
