Every time people complain about the “participation trophy generation” I ask,”Who was passing out those participation trophies?…They weren’t passing themselves out.”
Damn straight. It was our parents that did that and they talk the most shit about it because they don't want to admit, whoopsies
It's the dumbest male chest-thumping thing. I grew up in the 70s playing baseball and basketball and we got participation trophies every year. We loved getting them, put them in our rooms and went on with our lives unscathed.
@@gmh471 yeah, kids love getting just about _anything_ . you're missing the point. it spoils a child to receive a trophy for something not really earned. it makes them care less about working hard to try to earn a 'real' one, to actually achieve something. not winning a trophy or ribbon helps build character. a participation trophy builds apathy.
@@whitedevil2I think you’re kinda missing the point too. Kids barely give a shit about any of those. It’s the adults that care more about this stuff. I didn’t have many participation trophies growing up, I played a lot of sports and have winners medals and trophies. Neither did I give a shit about those medals nor did it turn me into some hyper competitive Uber successful ultra rich finance bro or pro athlete. My mom definitely stored those medals though, she cared way more than I ever did- heck I did most of them because of their insistence.
Also, I’m pretty sure most up and coming professional athletes these days probably got participation trophies growing up. They don’t mean anything. It’s all mostly just culture war bs.
@@mysticmalaichicken2518 my point still stands entirely. participation trophies aren't the worst things ever, but for the most part they don't do kids any good past a certain age, and it stifles ambition and character. but some parents don't want any kid to ever feel left out or face any adversity ever. kids need to learn at an early age that there are winners and losers in competition, and it takes dedication and effort to achieve something and best an opponent.
This guy has a gift for language.
Totally agree. What a wordsmith. He’s my favorite bc he’s clean (I just think that’s probably more difficult than more vulgar) and his vocabulary.
Gulman and Norm Macdonald are great because the journey is as important, if not more, than the destination
I was a national champion in an individual-competition contact sport. Along the way to kicking very few asses, I got my ass kicked many many times. With those ass-kickings came a little plaque. I didn't ask for it, but appreciated the token of 'having been there.' That being said, not only do I not have those plaques, but when I was 25 I disposed of the 5' tall trophies as well that twice signified my championships.
Later, I went to a fake war and attained participation and other medals. They sit in a bin in my garage.
“Flak, or guff…”
I’ll make sure to some work this phrase into my next performance review!
I could listen to this man all day, every day!
I know everyone loves the state abbreviations bit, and it is genius, but this is my favorite Gary Gulman bit!
He is like a funny Richard Gere.
Got a "most improved" little league trophy as a kid. I knew I stunk and that I'd been given a dishonorable pity trophy. Regardless, I definitely appreciate Gulman's fresh, funny, empathetic take on the participation trophy subject.
I got that too. It's a recognition of improvement and showing hustle. It's a way of being recognized. There's nothing wrong with it.
Lol it's little league. Literally everyone sucks
The Gul! My family calls you the Gul! lol
Perfection 👏👏👏
He’s just the best.
1:21 Don't forget the St. Louis Browns.
Absolutely LOVE Gary Gulman❤😂😂😂
boomers and genx started the participation trophies so wtf are they always whining about lol.
This guy is humbly next level
Love him❤
Conan's interview with Gary (if I may be so bold to call him by his first name) on Conan's podcast put Gary on my radar. Now I'm Gary Gulman 100%. Watched the Max special, AMAZING. Checked out how the states got their 2 digit abbreviations, one of the best bits of all time, and now I'm listening to Misfit (Audible).
Fun fact, (only for Gary) Gary Gulman and I grew up a couple miles from each other (we're about the same age) and I used to hang out in the same Toys R Us as he did. North Shore Mall for all Peabody locals.
If you see this Gary, did you ever come across Jason Mantzoulas at Liberty Tree Mall's GAP?
"the gul" lol
Hi Gary, long-time listener, first-time RUclips commenter. Where do you get your jeans? As a fellow tallman, I find it difficult to locate jeans with an inseam longer than 34" that aren't also way too wide. Thanks!
The Gul?!?! You can't give yourself a nickname. How about The G-Man? G2? G-Squared? The Gar? Loved your new special, btw.
He's a kinder, gentler George Carlin. The Gul is brilliant.
❤
I’ll never play fantasy football again!
THE GUL
No trophies for you
Somebody give him the hook. Oh wait he already has one.
Knock down that straw man!
Enjoyed the bit, but is it just me or is he talking about millenials as if they're still 7 year olds? This is supposed to be past tense right?
i love Gary, but defending participation trophies? dude. you were doing so well with getting people to appreciate the Jews' point of view.
Not one of his better sets. There isn't a lot of logical continuity between fantasy football and participation trophies.
They're both for losers, so that's one thing. Otherwise I agree
Even though the set went over your head, you should get a trophy for watching.
Not real funny.
I was talking to some comics and the "Dave Moss Approval" is pretty high on their list of what they are going for when they get into the business. This has to be devastating for (in the words of the Jetson) "The Gulman."
Gary, there's a semicolon at the end of the link to your website, it needs to be removed for the link to work.
Is this clip from a special?
The Great Depresh on Max.
