One thing I found when I read about Bismarck caught my interest and it is in fact a really interesting story! From when Bismarck first set sail, it always had a ship cat onboard, which original name given by the Germans is unknown. The cat was supposedly owned by an unknown crewman, but was seen as Bismarcks ship cat by almost the entire crew. The cat was on the ship during the entire battle of the Denmark Strait and of course also on board when Bismarck sank. It managed to survive the sinking and a few hours later, the cat was found floating on a board and picked up from the water by the British destroyer HMS Cossack. The British sailors named him Oscar. HMS Cossack returned to the Mediterranean sea where it went on escort duties. On 24 October 1941, Cossack was escorting a convoy from Gibraltar to Great Britain when it was hit by a torpedo fired from U-563, after which it was towed towards Gibraltar but eventually sank after a huge explosion. Again, Oscar survived, and was brought to shore at Gibraltar and then tranferred to the Aircraft Carrier HMS Ark Royal. When the captain of HMS Ark Royal saw Oscar, he allegedly said something like: "Is that the cat from the battleship Bismarck ? He is more than welcome onboard the Ark Royal!" At this point the cat got known by the new nickname "Unsinkable Sam", as a reference to the cat's luck after surviving two sinkings. But then, on 14 November 1941 Ark Royal too was torpedoed, this time by U-81 and sank around 30 miles from Gibraltar. Oscar managed to survive once again, and he was picked up and transferred to HMS Lightning and then to the same HMS Legion which had rescued the crew of HMS Cossack. HMS Legion would itself be sunk in 1942, and HMS Lightning in 1943. Oscar now, quite fairly, had gained a certain reputation of being extremely unlucky, and was therefore not allowed on another ship again and instead he was transferred first to the offices of the Governor of Gibraltar and then sent back to the United Kingdom, where he saw out the remainder of the war living in a seaman's home in Belfast called the "Home for Sailors". Oscar died in 1955.
I am 54 and I live in Indonesia. This video clip is one of the best that I have ever seen. I love history of warfare since childhood. The hunt for the Bismarck and the battle of the Denmark Strait is one of the most fascinating yet sad story. One thing that is absent in this clip the HMS Hood. The spectacular explosion that sunk HMS Hood will make this clip 100% perfect.
Fun Fact: There was a cat on this ship named Oskar I think, who survived, got transferred to a british ship, that ship got sunk, and then transferred to a RN Aircraft Carrier and that got sunk, and he survived again, earning him the nickname "Unsinkable Sam"
Told a friend today I was listening to Sabaton earlier, and they asked why, to which I said this; "Sabaton isn't metal. It's history set to song and verse... with metal."
Man, 1:45 always gives me chills...imagine being in a small trawler in a mist bank, and then seeing the Bismarck emerging. Plus, the fact that it would be a ghost ship at this point...
British Captain: "Are we already at the coast? I can see the Mountains!" Sailor: "Thats no Mountains. Thats a Battleship!" *Sabaton Music Starts playing*
For those who want to know : there was a cat on the boat. He survived when it sinked, and got taken by the british. And then he survided to the doom of two other boats after, and received the nickname of "Sam the unsinkable cat". That right, one of the most famous survivor of the Bismark is a cat who died in UK 14 years after his first steps on a boat. That explains a lot... Germans wanted to get their cat back.
Actually this isn't true, it's just a rumour as the destroyer said to have picked it up was in convoy duty at the time and was about 300 miles to the north west of where the cat was said to be picked up.
Oooh, so thats why germans are sometime nicknamed jerries. Oh wait no Tom is the cat, wait tom and jerry.... Jerry is a mouse and germany has a facination with mause... Ratte, Super panzer the mause.
I think it’s important that no matter the side of history a story is on, it should be remembered. It’s tragic that almost 2,000 men died, and it doesn’t matter the side they were on
"They are bound by iron and blood" great reference to Otto von Bismarck´s famous speech from 1862 ( Blood and Iron ). Sabaton knows whats good and since we are here, we know aswell. Great song
And remember that Bismarck and Tirpitz were only the fourth largest battleship classes built: The Yamatos were the largest, followed by the Iowas (which were the second largest, and also the longest and fastest) and then the one-off Vanguard. One thing all of these ships (even the Iowas) have in common is that, aside from maybe Bismarck sinking Hood (which was because of luck in a fight where the odds favoured the British, and could only even happen because the British didn’t bother sending carriers there instead), none of them actually did anything noteworthy or justified their existence due to being put into service in the carrier era. Vanguard had it the worst as she never even participated in WWII due to being completed AFTER the war.
@@bkjeong4302 The Yamato didn't do anything because the US basically sent the entire Pacific fleet after it, and it still almost broke out. Both the American and Japanese admirals made critical tactical errors, but the Americans were able to recover from theirs. Sea of Thunder is a great read about it, from both the American and Japanese perspectives.
@@jbo22fly That’s just for her final battle. She achieved little throughout her entire career (the stuff she did do, Leyte Gulf aside, was making sorties in response to American carrier raids, which was a bad idea as battleships cannot catch fleet carriers unless the carrier is being stupid). The Japanese first didn’t use her because they were saving her for the major surface engagement they wanted, then later because they realized that battle was never going to happen and now they had a pointless battleship on their hands they shouldn’t have built in the first place, and didn’t want to expend fuel on her.
@@ximent1530 Later ships of a given class are almost always larger than the first ship of the same class. If Vanguard ever had a sister ship (perhaps to reuse the turrets from the R-class?) she would likely have been larger than Tirpitz.
See, I wanna like it, cuz it's funny, but you have 666 likes when I write this, and I don't want to ruin such perfect number, so you get a comment instead :)
Of the HMS Hood's complement of 1,421 crewmen, only 3 survived their engagement with the Bismarck. It took a salvo in the aftward section and one of the shells penetrated a magazine, detonating the rear of the ship and sinking the vessel in around three minutes. War is indeed hell.
@@UltimaShadow 4k battles here: Bismarck isn't terrible, but she's suffered from powercreep severely. 2 years ago she was great. By now she's decent at best.
A hit stuck its direction si Bismarck could only go left in circles. Ships then surrounded it with a ton of ships and after shooting a long time at it, finally sunk it. Try sinking Bismarck otherwise
@Awesome trucker 747 Almost. The crew had planned to as their guns were down. The Brits finally had to make for port and left a couple of cruisers to hit it with torps. Most likely it was that what ended it as it was probably listing enough to push the armor belts below the water.
My dad and I always disagree in terms of music, but even he admitted that Sabaton always has great topics for lyrics. And he also admitted that it’s awesome that this video was recorded at sea
@@pgre make sure you don't have anything wrong above it. when giving an error message python will show where the error is when converting it to assembly not where it is in your code so it isn't always right about where an error is.
I loved the concept of this band. These soldiers that died, most of the times they were innocent ordinary men that were trapped into a crazy war and did their best. These unknown ordinary men deserve to be praised in their context.
Fun fact: when the Bismarck was sunk and the Royal Navy rescued the 115 crew they did they also rescued a black and white cat named Oscar which they renamed to Unsinkable Sam. Sam went on to serve on the HMS Cossack which sank and also the Carrier HMS Ark Royal which ironically was instrumental in sinking the Bismarck. The Ark Royal sank and Sam survived. In total Unsinkable Sam survived the sinking of 3 ships.
@King Corgi I thank you very much for this vital piece of info and wanna know why your comment doesn't have a like million likes and a thousand replies?
@@FausFaustius Well - it was very lucky hit which destroyed the Hood. Forward magazine, direct hit, three survivors. Lujtens and Lindemann were extremly lucky that day... not that much in long run given that the Swordfish which took away their ability to stear pulled of even more of miraculous hit. then no amount of luck could have saved them against full might of british home fleet.

To show the power of flex tape, I brung the Bismarck from the bottom of the sea and repaired it using only flex tape, then declared war on Great Britain.
@jerak02 Or how about , rofl, U-1206. At least U-406 only had weapons failure...1206 though, hahaha. Only true history buffs will know why I'm laughing so hard at that poor submarine, I'll happily explain though for anyone who doesn’t already know.
@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 A submersible survey of the wreck in the early 2000’s revealed damage, but not overly severe, to the armoured citadel of the hull, although the battle had completely destroyed the ships fighting and navigational abilities and fire had completely gutted her. Had the German cadets who manned the Bismarck not hastened it’s actual sinking, the hull may have maintained sufficient integrity to float for a number of hours (possibly a day?) longer, until the weight of her guns and the influx of water eventually spun her over.
@@strumpf0815 "the hull may have maintained sufficient integrity to float for a number of hours"..... So in other words she was already sinking then? Any "scuttling" efforts simply accelerated what was already happening. If I throw petrol onto an already burning, well alight building, does that make me the "arsonist"?
That's how a lookout from HMS Suffolk described seeing her for the first time. "This massive beast the likes i've never seen came out of the fog and I was frozen and speechless."
After this battle, John Tovey wrote in his memoirs: "Bismarck gave the most heroic battle under the most impossible conditions, worthy of the old days of the Imperial German Navy, and he went under water with a flag raised."
Fun Fact: In 1902 Kaiser Wilhelm introduced a tax on sparkling wine in Germany to finance the Kriegsmarine. Not so fun Fact: Today that tax is still in place and every time we buy sparkling we pay 1,01€ extra to rebuild the Kriegsmarine.
“Captain, our rangefinder’s been knocked out!” “How come? Was it because of the shockwave of our first salvo?” “Uhhh... no sir, it’s because there’s a civilian fishing ship out there with a bunch of Swedes jamming on it” “... mein gott, it’s worse than we feared”
i always love the last verse because i always imagine that with every beat of joakims knee a flash of the bismark appears behind him, guns blazing, with each beat a shot fired. gives the real mentality of going down absolutely swinging.
@namelastname871 Yes, that's pretty much what happened. War is ugly and a waste of life and resources. The glory & bravado are PURELY for the recruitment posters. NEVER be convinced otherwise. All the best.

@@jbo22fly
That’s just for her final battle.
Germans were know how to build war machines😉👍
@@ximent1530
Later ships of a given class are almost always larger than the first ship of the same class. If Vanguard ever had a sister ship (perhaps to reuse the turrets from the R-class?) she would likely have been larger than Tirpitz.

Of the HMS Hood's complement of 1,421 crewmen, only 3 survived their engagement with the Bismarck. It took a salvo in the aftward section and one of the shells penetrated a magazine, detonating the rear of the ship and sinking the vessel in around three minutes.

@Awesome trucker 747 Almost. The crew had planned to as their guns were down. The Brits finally had to make for port and left a couple of cruisers to hit it with torps. Most likely it was that what ended it as it was probably listing enough to push the armor belts below the water.
