A much requested comparison test for sure! We actually had a lot of fun filming this one and really, there is no bad choice... but there is always one that is slightly better than the other and you'll have to skip to the end if you wanna see how we ranked the new Telluride, Atlas, and Ascent ;)

T L Large Kias have a horrible resale value! Worst in the USA for non luxury vehicles In fact (cadenza and k900)
Also long term reliability absolutely the ford Toyota and Honda are far better than the Kia. The Dodge is debatable. But the MASSIVE performance of the dodge makes me look at it more. It’s got 360hp and 390lbft! Vs kias what 270hp 250lbft?’
Same reason ford is up there. 300hp 310lbft! (And that’s the base engine!)

I have a VV Atlas SE. Before buying I took the test drive of the other cars too. I think it has the best leg room as compared to the other counter parts. As the third row is very comfortable for seating. A 6 feet person can sit comfortably like the second row passenger. Plenty of head space and after the third row is up, you still have plenty of space for the cargo.

  • @oliverroo59
    @oliverroo59 5 лет назад +31

I work for Subie and can say that the Ascent is very clean and handsome in person, especially in profile. It's a well-done vehicle. The Touring trim adds saddle brown leather and woodgrain trim to the interior, as well as forward facing cameras and a rear-view camera mirror. That would've been a better comparison to the top spec Kia. The little 2.4 turbo in it is an overachiever....smooth, punchy and refined. It really moves once it's on boost. Customers say "it has a 4cylinder?!" but test drives quell their concerns. It's also selling very well. (One pricing note - the Ascent Touring stickers for $44k, but Subaru adds a lot of accessories to almost all of them, so it's hard to find one for less than $46k - crossbars, auto-dimming side mirrors, LED interior light "upgrade", all-weather floor protection, etc.).
Having said that, Kia knocked it out of the park with the Telluride. I'm a single man, just turned 30, have no need for any of these vehicles, and yet I still WANT a Telluride (specifically in that color combination) because it looks so cool.
The Volkswagen does nothing for me. It looks okay on the outside but the interior looks cheap.

Yeah. We drove everything on the market with a 3rd row. The Ascent won walking away if you're in it for a family vehicle and not as glorified trail wagon. I have a built Tacoma. Not trying to make the family ride into a bad version of an ORV. Creature comforts and the ability to modify every single damned option via the infotainment system was the difference. Well, that and resale value. We'll see what all these Telluride honks are saying when they go to trade em in, lol.

I’m not saying the cvt has problems. The cvt does help with fuel economy on the AWD standard Subaru.
But imo, pairing a turbo and cvt is not my cup of tea. Lag off the line and the engine wailing and buzzing at 6K RPM from the cvt.
The same thing I notice in the Altima now. I prefered the V6 and cvt combo. For some reason, the only exception is the Honda Accord 1.5T

A couple of problems with this review.....
    1) The Atlas has 5 trim levels where the Telluride has 4. You compared the 2nd highest trim level of a Telluride with the mid level Atlas. Trim for trim, the Atlas has 99% of the same features as the Telluride with the exception of cooled rear seats
    2) you don’t have to go up to the highest trim level to get the digital cockpit in the Atlas, you can simply go up to the 2nd highest being the SEL. The SEL Premium is the highest.
    3) “Lane keep assist” isn’t standard on Atlas’
    4) The R-Line package as well as the SE w/ Tech package are not new for 2019, they have been available since 2018, albeit slightly more difficult to find.
If you want to save even more money on an Atlas, pick it up in the 2.0 4 cylinder turbo engine. It’s not as “sluggish” as the VR6 engine, gets better gas mileage, and is $2000 cheaper.

Yeah...also the dude said that the VW is disappointing because the 3rd row isnt 3 seats...but... the 2nd row is 3 seats. Arent they all 7 seaters??!
I dont get AT ALL how the telluride and subaru have just 2 seats in the 2nd row. Why is that a thing??
If you actually need the full boot you have a 4 seater car. Thats a big big restriction.
And if you have 5 people riding, 1 of them is forced in the back where if you are taller than 170cm/ 5'7 its pretty goddamn painfully cramped to sit in the 3rd row.
And its not like more comfortable you just get useless arm rests. Why are americans fixated on arm rests?? Oh...
My bad. I just realized that the cars are like that because americans are huge and barely a kid would fit between the 2 seats...but at the same time they put a 3rd row with 3 seats that small?
Btw its also the first time ever ive seen a reviewer talking about the sound the door makes when its closed? Is that really something americans care about?? Sure my Peugeot 5008's doors i just bought feel just like the bmw m6, mercedes class S, bmw x5, porshe 911 my dad had, but...i saw that when i test drove it and it was literally the last thing to come to my mind.
Either way the kia looks really good but the VW is the better car by far.
Its so weird how some car manufacturers just upped their game so mich in the last 5 to 10 years, so much so that they compete with much more expensive "classic good" cars, like bmw, mercedes, lexus, range rover etc...
I mean i bought a Peugeot 5008 gt line instead of a BMW X3. Paid 15k $ less while the Peugeot has just 15 less hp, its bigger, has more space, the inside is prettier, the x3 didnt even have android auto, it has adaptive cruise control and lane centering just like the x3 (its the lvl2 automated driving like the tesla).
For 15k $ less i got basically the same car but bigger, except it doesnt have a bmw badge.
Same goes for a KIA sorrento or a hyundai santa fe. Who would have thought korean lame cars would become so good. Or even Peugeot used to make lame low cost meh cars, mostly minivans and hatchbacks. And then they come out with a suv 3000 line with premium insides and they look AMAZING. Same goes for old man cars like volvo and their XC line, beautiful cars especially the XC40.
And VW comes out with a freaking luxury car with the touareg, which competes with freaking bmw X6/X7 and audi Q8. Mindblown.

I got the Ascent. One correction on the cargo space. With the 2nd and 3rd row folded you get 86.5 Cubic feet of cargo space. Not 77. When I ordered my Ascent the Telluride was not available. I considered a large number of vehicles before my purchase. Single guy no kids. But comfort, cargo, tech and value were my main priorities. Ultimately when all things are nearly equal the last thing left to consider was “style” I thought the Atlas was a bit too big. The same with the Chevy Traverse. If the Chrysler Pacifica came with ground clearance and an AWD option I would have gotten that all day every day. The Telluride/Pallisade was a little too “in your face” for my taste. Like comparing a Ford Expedition to a Lincoln Navigator. I would have gotten the Ford. My final two choices came down to the Mazda CX-9 and the Ascent. The Ascent has a friendly 3rd row than the Mazda and better Cargo space. Final choice for me was the Ascent but if the Telluride had been available at the time it would have been a closer call.

Subaru and Toyota dominated the Consumer Reports list of the best new vehicles of 2019. ... Subaru ranked first overall among 33 brands, followed by four luxury brands: Genesis, Porsche, Audi and Lexus..
I will go for the Subaru Ascent!

  • @meestabeck

Just bought my wife the Ascent Limited. Considered the Telluride and Atlas. I was dissapointed with VW (whom I have long been a fan of) with a recent vehicle, and my wife thought the Telluride was ugly (I like the style personally, and the 2 Hyundais that I have owned never gave me a single issue, but this is her car, not mine). This is our 3rd Subaru, and the reason that we keep going back is definitely not the looks, its the AWD system. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Suby's eat up the snow.
I was worried about a turbo flat 4 mated to a CVT in a three row SUV, but I got to test drive it, and was shocked how much torque that powerplant puts down. The interior may not be as plush as the Kia, but it is the most upscale vehicle that we have ever owned. The 14 speaker Harmon Kardon stereo is really nice too.
It may not win any beauty pageants, but it is a great car for us. And my wife has the same confidence in the snow as Outback, but can fit our three kids with hockey gear now much easier.
Now for the important discussion. When the hell are any of these brands going to bring back manual transmissions to vehicles larger than an econobox sedan!?

Great review as usual. I really appreciate both, You and Alex on Autos for your honest reviews. There are other reviewers that don't move seats fully back in one car's third seat legroom check and then claim that it has good legroom or putting a smaller reviewer in the driver seat of one car and a larger reviewer in the other to make it seem tighter. Both you and Alex do it right and give far more informative and accurate reviews. Well done.

I did test drive the Atlas and a Toyota Highlander earlier this year. Recently test drove a 2020 Telluride LX. Oh man what a difference. Luxury feel, and very, very quiet, ride was smooth and drove like a really high end luxury car. Also wanted to correct you about the availability of 2nd row captain’s chairs, they are standard on the S and SX models. Also you never mentioned anything about the amber ring around the headlights. This color only comes on the top trim SX MODEL. ALL THE OTHERS, the LX , S AND EX models have clear lights around the headlights. I don’t like the amber ones. Wish they had not done the amber ones. My preference.
Can’t wait til the Palisade comes out to compare it to the Telluride. Will definitely be buying one or the other depending on pricing, ride, and features. The only thing I wasn’t impressed with on the Telluride is that you have to move up to one of the top two trim levels to get an electronic tail gate opener! What?

I agree with your preference on the "clear" vs "amber ring." Not a deal breaker, but it would help me to settle for the next trim level down due to that color clash.
