My Touring Rig: Will it Fire Up After a Decade? Marshall JTM 45

  • While the neighbours are away I thought I would fire up my old rig. My trusty companion over many years and thousands of miles.
    The amp is a late 90’s Marshall JTM 45 reissue, modded with KT-66s and a solid state rectifier. The cab is a Doyle Custom Audio 4x12 loaded with Celestion G12T-75 watt speakers.
    The guitar is my early 90’s MIJ Made in Japan Fender Stratocaster 60’s reissue. This was my first serious guitar and has been with me everywhere for almost 30 years. Its the one I would grab if the house was on fire.
    My only source of overdrive in my gigging days was my Analogman Sun Face NKT-275 pedal, rehoused in a Dunlop Fuzz Face enclosure. I ride the volume all night for different shades of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz.
    On certain nights this rig would absolutely nail Jimi Hendrix and Eric Johnson tones. Gigging with my tweed deluxe as of late has saved my back, but there’s nothing like this rig for me.

    Your electrolytic capacitors need to be reformed if it has sat unused for a year or more. You could do some real damage to the amp. Looks like a sweet rig. You should take it to a good tech and have it looked at. Help preserve it for posterity!!

    I love my Marshall JTM45 because of it's tone and ability to sound cranked at medium-low volumes such as 2-1/2 on the volume knob.
    Honestly I had some difficulty in obtaining a working JTM as I went through three (3) brand new JTM45'S that all had an issue within 10 days! But the tone had to be in my life so recently I purchased my 4th brand new JTM45. Strangely this 4th model sounded perfect for around 10 days then for some reason one afternoon while playing at my usual volume setting of around 2-1/2 to 3 the volume glitched in and out 3 times and the tone/volume has never been exactly the same. But she is working and sounding so good that I am keeping her. I may try placing a small 12AU7 headphone tube amp in front of the signal to get that fuzzy natural killer tone. I never need to use pedals on any JTM45 to be floored by the tone. I absolutely am finally happy now that I have a working JTM45 back in my studio. I play through a Marshall Full Stack of (2) 412 cabs, but still at a lowish volume , now around 3-1/2 to 4. When brand new I got my sound at around 2-1/2 on the volume. Now I need to crank a little more volume but I do get my tone!
    I can not live without the JTM45 tone. I have learned to make two other tube heads sound really close so now I can alternate amps every day. I am already using the 12AU7 headphone tube preamp for the other tube amp heads and I am a very happy 74 year old man. I play every day-all day long.
    I highly recommend the Marshall JTM45/2245 Tube Amp Head. You will finally be satisfied and shall never have to look at any amplifier gear again for as long as you live-they are that good!

      P.S. I prefer a GZ34 tube rectifier (which is original equipment for the JTM45) over a solid state/transistor rectifier like he said is now in his JTM45. The reason being I like tube sag.

      @@PeterDad60 that’s a matter of preference. I hate sag, especially when I was doing 3 one hours a night and the character of the amp would completely change by the end. Way more tight and consistant with a solid state rectifier.

  • @7171jay
    @7171jay Месяц назад

    It would have been a bit kinder to the amp to use a variac and slowly bring the amp up to full wall voltage after being unused for so many years but it seems it did OK without that.
    Exercise the pots a bunch and you might get lucky and have them clean up otherwise you will have to open it up and get some good potentiometer cleaner and along with more exercise you should probably be able to bring them back to proper function.
    Mightt be time to consider a quality reactive load speaker attenuator so you can make use of the amp more often and not go deaf or have your neighbors want to kill you.

    • @imarobotrocker
      @imarobotrocker  Месяц назад

      @@7171jay definitely pulling the chassis and servicing the pots. I’ve thought about an attenuator but it’s not in the cards. It’s another thing to have to bring, another complication, and I’d rather not work the amp hard with anything other than a speaker. Another video to come as I’ll be using this amp soon with a new project…just not with a 4x12.

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay Месяц назад

      @imarobotrocker Yeah the attenuator is another thing to deal with and it's pretty obvious you are a minimalist with just the Fuzzface and the amp and working the guitar's volume knob so maybe along with cost that's not a route you want to go.
      On the other hand there are decent reactive load attenuators that don't cost all that much like the Webers and you don't necessarily have to work the amp crazy hard just because you use an attenuator.
      I think being able to run the amp even just a bit higher with an attenuator can be useful. If you like the amp on say five or six along with the Fuzzface then knocking some volume off with the attenuator isn't going to be overworking the amp. It only is you are running the amp full out that you would be stressing it, and that's not due to the attenuator but simply because the amp is being run hard.
      Careful opening the amp up, if you don't know it can retain voltage in the caps even if not plugged into AC and give you a seriously dangerous jolt if your fingers touch something in there that makes you part of the circuit.

    You're lucky you didn't take out several dried out high voltage filter capacitors and perhaps even your power transformer by just firing up an amp that's been sitting for a decade like that. Next time use a Variac or take it to a tech. You got lucky this time...

      @@imarobotrocker The electrolytic material in certain capacitors can dry out... this might not be such an issue with newer caps, but the vintage stuff would dry out in a few months. Hitting them with full voltage after they've been sitting uncharged and unformed for so many years can be asking for trouble that's all I'm saying. @@imarobotrocker You're lucky you didn't have to repair a blown up JTM 45 Reissue someone let sit idle for 10 years. Would you take a barn find 60's Mustang that had been sitting for 30 years and just stick a battery in it, stick the key in and try and fire it up? Of course you wouldn't... only an idiot would try that without flushing out the rancid 30 year old gas, pulling the carburetor, and putting in new points and plugs, etc, right? Any truly experienced amp builder or tech would tell you that you don't just let an amp sit around for 10 years and then just fire it up one day without a Variac to slowly bring the voltage up to reform and recharge your filter caps just to make sure there aren't any issues. But you seem to be a regular Ken Fischer or Howard Dumble and know a whole lot more than them about guitar amplifiers so I'll bid you peace botrocker ✌
