    man I miss that amp. I bought it when in my 20s and in a metal band. I loved it. I combined it with a boss gt8 (which was an overkill for me, but I was young and had savings lol). I tried several ways to connect them together, but the one I liked the most, was using the Clean channel + the Gt8 whatever settings I had, and when I had a lead part to play, I'd kick the OD2 in and it sounded so aggressive, it really put my sound in front of everybody elses. I'm sure it must have not been the ideal way of doing things, but I miss feeling the sound beating my chest. Had to sell it when I became a dad to afford moving into a new place. The line out is emulated, which means it has speaker emulation, so putting cabinet impulses onto an emulated signal is not advisable since the line out is already emulating a speaker cabinet. Other than that, good review and very nice demo. You're one of the only people who have done a thorough look at this excellent amp. The MGHDFX line was basically this minus the preamp tube, and included better reverb and built in effects. I can't speak about the MG lines after that since I never played any of those.They phased out these Valvestates because the MG took its place. I have an MGHDFX100H and it sounds better than the VS100r that my friend has, believe it or not. His also has the noise issues that your VS has.

    Great demo and opinions...I bought a 1993 VS100 about 3 years ago in like new condition, although I needed to replace the power button because the original one was faulty. I also had to re-solder one of the condensers after discovering that it was the reason for some very loud noise. All in a lovely amp. But now I'm faced with the dilemma of deciding which one to keep of two amps...The VS 100 or my Peavey Red Stripe Bandit (".)

      I had recently resolder the electrolytic caps on another VS and it fixed the hum like in 80%, the customer was happy so we left it that way. I´ve had several peaveys and they are really good amps, I like peavey cleans and the overdrive is also good but different compared to Marshalls

      Well, in reality preamp tubes don´t need to be changed unless there is a problem with it. Changing the tube is pretty easy, you just open the amp, rock the tube while pulling and it will come out. The new one you do it backwards and be careful not to bend the pins, they have to match the holes in the socket

    I just bought this amp on Reverb a little bit ago. The VS100H is great! I love the OD2 for extreme metal but I have to put the mids at almost 5oclock to actually cut through in a mix.

    Fantastico! Excellent review. Just bought the 8080 myself. Btw the first generation (8000-series) mostly does not have a red power switch. It´s just the 212 version that I´ve seen. There are 8010, 8020, 8040, 8080 and 8100 that don´t have red. The way I tell them generations apart is the Valvestate-logo: 8000-series has an airy outline font and VS has a Black Label (Society). AVT I don´t care about. Also 8000-series combos have more connectors on the front, as both footswitch and fx-loop connectors are there. And line out.

    Such a good review Al, but I have to say that FX Mix knob is actually one of the VS100's best kept secrets (it's definitely not boring). I don't think any of these are design features as there is no mention of any of this in the product manual, but anyway.....
    First trick, if just playing through the input (nothing connected to SND/RTR jacks)...push in the FX Level button and the FX Mix knob works as a 0 to 10db booster.
    Second trick, when using the FX Loop (without sending signal to the front input, say a GT-1000 or similar in 4CM or direct to FX RTN), the FX Mix works as a master volume...and then if playing through the input only, in 4CM, the FX Mix will work as a master volume in reverse (lowers the volume as you turn to the right), which allows you to crank the Channel Volume and Gain but roll down the overall volume with the FX Mix knob (very useful). This also opens the door to putting the Clean channel on 10 to get some knarly break-up and crunch tones while using the FX Mix to lower the overall volume.
    Also, if playing through the FX RTN, if you use the Clean channel you get a direct unaffected signal through to the power section/speaker (good for consistently reproducing your patches), but if you use an OD channel, the OD tone controls still function on the FX Loop signal which allows you to EQ your multi-effects or whatever is connected, with the Overdrive EQ on the front of the amp.
    Once you get your head around what you can do with that FX Mix knob, it opens a whole heap of additional ways to use these great amps.

    so the tube act only on the clean channel and od1 and 2 are solid state?

    • @alveramps
      @alveramps  4 года назад +1

      If I remember correctly:
      - the overdrive channel has a chip (tube screamer type) and other transistors but the tube es at the end in charge of the last gain stage and the cathode follower (driving the tone stack)
      - clean channel is all solid atate
      - power amp is all solid state
      I hope I didn't get too technical here 🤣🤣

    The hum was in mine, I opened it up and it was very clean and new looking, so checked the valve/tube and it was a Philips NOS, switched it out
    for a Harma ECC83 which was fine in another amp but made mads sounds and increased the hum, so swapped that for a decent no brand china 12AX7 valve/tube
    and it cut the hum right down, gonna try a12AY7 to see the effect it has, meanwhile I will keep the China valve in it as that hum was too much as I play low volume.

    Hi I got the Celestion G12 Vintage 30 8 ohm but it's 60 watt

  • @Techo1329
    @Techo1329 3 года назад +1

    Also, VS100R speaker upgrades, many people think you have to use high power speakers as it's marketed as a 100W amp...but you only ever need a 100W speaker if you are fitting a stand alone 4ohm speaker. The amp is 100W into 4ohm, 50W into the standard 8ohm speaker, and if you connect to a 112 cab, you get 100W into 4ohms (2 x 8ohm parallel speakers), which gives 50W to each speaker. So 50W speakers are ok, can even go lower if you don't drive the amp super hard.

I checked all the places that you normally check to solve hums and it didnt get any better. I noticed though that the hum level depended on the place I plugged it in. So in the end I could not determined if it was a bad transistor or sonething else. Later on I was called to repair another valvestate and I resolder the electrytic caps and it got like 70% fixed but remained a background hum like the amp on this video but way lower and the customer was happy so I left it like that.
