Just dropped in to listen to my own stuff and... wow, I was not prepared for how good MAP09 and MAP30 sounded in this SF, whole new dimension of epicness. I composed a track with the Arachno Soundfont recently for another MIDI Pack, and I should probably do that more.
This is an amazing MIDI pack. Nails that more electronic, atmospheric feel to the original while expanding on it, in the way any great MIDI replacement pack should.
Notice how for MAP02 Lippeth referenced the similarity of the Perdition's Gate track riff to "Smells Like Burning Flesh" in TNT, since they were both done by Tom Mustaine? I love that attention to detail.
Sorry for the confusion, this isn't the original TNT soundtrack - this is a community project that remakes and expands upon it. The first version of the MIDI Pack was actually released on the 25th anniversary in June, and the final version (which you're hearing right now) is only a few days old!
I want to preface that I have nothing against Arachnofont itself, but I really just want to say I really don’t see the point of taking stuff that were made for SC-55 and putting it into a font that makes some of the instruments sound completely different, or have the overall volume incredibly lowered/raised for some of them. I think it really messes with some tracks, and I’m sure this isn’t intentional, but it’s kind of disrespectful to the original author of the song, since; weather you like it or not, they made that song for SC-55 and nothing else. So putting it through a font that completely changes certain instruments to sound better feels kinda backhanded, it gives off the impression that you’re trying to make it sound better, when 1: it’s a complete gamble if it will work with what the song’s going for, 2: will sometimes have instruments be under/overpowering against the others, and 3: in a way undermine the amount of work and decision making put into some of this music to make it sound the way it does. I’m sorry if I came off as rude or aggressive in this, it’s not my intention at all. I just kind of see this as the music equivalent to interpolated animation, and it kinda hurts seeing it with so much praise and have pretty much no one mention this. I am absolutely sure that some amazing sounding music can be made with Arachnofont, but that will be because it was made for that font in mind. I’m sorry this was so long, but I’ve this has been on my mind for months, and I just needed to say something about it… :(
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There's nothing wrong with yours. And you spoke your mind in a coherent and critical manner. I think that's how it's supposed to be. ;)
You actually gave the best answer to all your statements: " putting it into a font [...] makes some of the instruments sound completely different" It was one of the main purposes of my SoundFont: offering a different experience on tracks you've always been used to hear (not to say "trained") with other sets of instruments. And, you're right, it can be completely hit & miss. Some instruments can sound too loud, some can sound too quiet. But, in many situations, many people will appreciate the (different) result. Even the composers themselves... Read Ivan Stanton's or cimcam's opinion just before yours. I couldn't be more proud to get my work praised by the author themselves... Moreover, your opinion is really accurate when you're considering tracks made with the SC-55, and only this module, which is considered as THE reference on balance settings. So, it would make sense for DOOM's original soundtrack composed with it in 1993. But what about tracks that weren't actually composed with a SC-55? This "TNT MIDI Pack", for instance? With so much different composers, I seriously doubt everyone used the real thing, which is nearly 30 years old, by the way. Even Lee Jackson himself, THE Lee Jackson, contributed to this pack, and as far as I know, his workhorse was a SC-88 back in the day, not a SC-55 (Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad...). And the SC-88 was, indeed, criticized back in its day for not being THAT accurate on balance settings, that the SC-55 was. So, your assumption is actually biaised here: you can't affirm that those MIDIs would sound better on a SC-55, if they weren't ACTUALLY composed with the SC-55 in mind. And, even so, the result could still be worth listening to. I've composed some original tracks with Arachno SoundFont in mind. But I'll never say that they sound wrong with anything else: they simply sound different. INTERESTINGLY different. Back in the 1990s, we were used to hear our favorite VGMs on AdLib/FM, MT-32, wavetables, consoles... with our own preferences, and everyone was spitting on the others claiming that HIS or HER version sounded better than all the others, just because (S)HE was used to THIS version. But all interpretations, all versions are worth listening. And no one will ever reach a 100% praise score. Just because we have different tastes and opinions. Nothing more :) I know that the balance is one of the main flaws of Arachno SoundFont. I know that I've been wanting to fix this for more than 10 years. But, so far, it seems that many people are actually happy with it, so... I'm sleeping peacefully :)
I know this comment is nearly a year old but I'm back on this video again and felt like replying - as a MIDI composer and one who worked on this pack, the only "true" version of my MIDIs is one played through the Microsoft GS Wavetable synths or better yet one of the soundfonts replicating it because then you can lose the polyphony limit which I often break, every other soundfont sounds wrong to me - INCLUDING SC-55 - because as you say, a lot of instruments sounds and volume balancing are changed drastically, so I completely understand your point of view. Of course people can like whatever they want, if someone prefers my track with a sound set I didn't intend it to be heard with, that's okay. I do still enjoy these videos though because I don't mess with soundfonts myself these days and so it's interesting for me to hear how they all handle my MIDIs. Ionian Isolation from TNT Revilution's MAP12 just falls apart every time and it's honestly kinda funny. And I made a similar piece for Plutonia 3, but even more to the PSX Doom-style ambience side, it's going to be an absolute disaster when its run through these soundfonts and I'm looking forward to seeing it on here one day! For Broken Mirror here, each soundfont seems to bring out certain details more, and as always I never feel its better than in the Microsoft synth, but I generally like the results. Arachno really brings out the square lead pattern that I carried over from the original track, and I was always fond of its pianos so I knew it would do well with this track. If you listen to Jeremy Doyle's SC-55 render, you can hear the synth bass much more clearly than in any other version. As for the other soundfonts, the Gravis one mostly does alright with the track but I don't love the ride cymbal and that cutoff on the crashes is very off-putting. Also the warm pad seems to be an octave lower than it should be which messes with the ending a bit. Colombo has some nice drum sounds but they're a bit on the loud side maybe. After a few more listens I think Arachno is my favourite for this track. So yeah, tl;dr I always have mixed feelings about how my tracks actually sound in these soundfonts, but I still find it interesting to hear these renditions, and sometimes it's a nice surprise :)
kinda disappointed at how weird the balancing on this is compared to sc-55, especially on tracks like "Drywall" that use the brightness patch. arachno normally does great with midis of any genre, so its a shame that this pack sounds so wonky with it.

I just can't get over how much quality is contained in these MIDI Packs.
map 07's Midi is my favorite in the Whole Midi pack
Thanks for the upload, man! Arachno really beefs up some of these tracks, Soulsweeper in particular sounds incredible!
I agree! Thank you for driving this pack to its final stage! :)

I didn't know decino was part of the doom community back then. The more you know.
What do you mean?
@@GoranObal I just thought he was newer to the community. It's been 25 years since TNT came out, yet he authored some of the songs.
