I am from this area. My dad and I would hunt these canyons every weekend during the season when I was younger. Thank you for uploading. :)

Great video and documentation of your hunt. Thanks for sharing and thanks for info. I’ve got like 15 years or preference points for the mule deer draw. Still patiently waiting. I have heard that this place is beautiful but just not alot of game. Not even Aoudad. Well anyway, new sub here. Continue on sharing your our common passion , THE OUTDOORS. 👍🏻

Hey Jeff, it’s Matt..the hunter that met you and drew the yellow unit on this Caprock hunt. I really enjoyed your video.
It brought back memories of how rough this hunt was.
Plenty of Aoudad sign in the yellow unit, but never saw a deer after glassing from elevation for 3 days.
That’s why they call it hunting!
Deep, rough canyons back there with thick cedar.
I had 15 preference points when I drew this hunt.
As beautiful as Caprock Canyon was, and seeing the Bison, I don’t plan to put in for it again.
It didn’t seem like it was geared for the hunters, but more for the hiking crowd that enjoys the park. It was disappointing when the hunt manager couldn’t even answer the simple question if there were any water sources in my 1200 acre unit, that was a mile+ hike just to get into..
We knew that the father/son that drew the unit across from the private wheatfield would have the best luck.
I ran into them on the last morning of the hunt as they were bringing in a nice mature 5 x 5 buck. Sure enough, he had been crossing that county road into the winter wheat and back from the park.
Overall, a tough hunt but absolutely beautiful country to be in. Just rough when you don’t see any game at all in your unit for three days.
I’ll give you a call the next time I’m up around Dallas and we’ll catch a beer. Thanks again for the great video.

I feel like they should do the baited hunt after your walk and stalk hunt. 59:10

Great video. We put in for this hunt each year, but have yet to be selected.

Probably a good idea to be able to identify a mule deer before you go on a hunt like this.

You gave up 11 years worth of points to draw a mule deer hunt in December and your leaving early for a bird hunt ?

I’ve been hunting West Texas and own some west Texas land and mule deer population has drastically decreased. We Went hunting 2 weeks ago and we only saw 2 does and 1- 4 point buck. I’ve literally seen the population decrease because of the CWD. (Zombie Disease).

That's unfortunate to hear. It's a real problem with CWD. I was hopeful that with the short general season that TX has in place, along with the antler restrictions, that we'd see better results with the small Mule Deer population we have.
