Love the simple focused format. More of this please. Too many other channels I watch want to put up 90 minute videos and I can't really waste that much time....
MJ at Just Plane Fun has been a “parts” go to for me for three years now. He has an excellent type study series as well.
They are the best!!! Love that place!
Snarky CDB
Ah, I see you’ve mastered the ancient art of turning a simple plank into a complex series of splinters. Truly, the mark of a true craftsman! Keep it up, and you might even reach professional level.
i would put a snide remark but i cant think of one. love the fun you have in your videos.
I know I commented several times about how the adjustment on the #81 was different than the #80. 😉 I have a Hock iron in mine, and it works a treat now that I have it adjusted. Mine still has the original sole, but it's definitely got a very distinct chamfer on it by now, so I may replace it at some point, perhaps with katalox. Hrm.... Anyway, glad to see how you did that--I hadn't gotten much past the "I'm going to have to do this at some point" part of the planning. One thing that almost always gets me with this plane, though... I'll be scraping with it really aggressively, and then I'll run my little finger right up against the arris on the side of the board and cut myself. I have done this _so many times_.
:) "Sharp is two flat planes coming together (merging/meeting, etc.) at an angle."
Some of my best scrapers are made from old hand saw blades.
Love the old tools. I find myself wanting to revive tools almost as much as actual wood working. But life gets in the way of both.😢
If you do a video on scrapers I’d love to know all the difference between all the different scrapers and compare to the new scrapers on the market and even just the scraper holders that vertías and Rockler have out.
Nice work! Though, this is why I keep a good supply of reclaimed vintage steel and brass slotted screws on hand.
And never knew they had a wooden sole, I learned something today and I got a quote I can't remember from whom but studs "the only day truly wasted is a day you don't learn something"!!!!
Since you made the sole, you are now a soleman
I been meaning to get a scraper...I love my scraping cards and like the idea of holding something bigger and scraping a larger area seems like a plan
I have never seen a "bird's mouth" before, but it is functionally equivalent to a jeweler's bench pin, which is an essential part of a standard jeweler's work bench and used for just about everything.
Stanley makes good tools and some of them are works of art honestly
They made good tools now they’re just cheap crap
I have an 81 that I've been meaning to resole for a few years now. The idea of just cutting the throat is going to make it so much easier, I had originally thought that I would have to pierce it and then open it with a float, which put me off from committing to starting on it.
Sounds like you may have just been given a new "Aroundtuit" to replace the one you misplaced.
I just machined a rosewood sole for my 12 1/2. Fun tool project. I haven't sharpened the blade yet maybe this weekend. Thanks for the video.
I love how your video gets the soul of woodworking
Wonderful! About 2 years ago I was gifted an 81 w/o sole. This project has been on my to-do list since.
Great. About time we have a new video of this almost forgotten tool. Thanks
You’re a Stax Records kinda guy: A Soul Man
Random facts with a bad pun: I say “Stax Records” because it’s performed by Sam & Dave with Booker T & the MGs and other Stax regulars. Written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Pretty cool that all that talent were essentially neighborhood kids who liked to hang out.
The sole of the old machine. Nicely done, sir!
That is a pretty piece of equipment.
Good timing I recently brought a Stanley 81 at a estate sale. I have to do some restoration on it.
A scraper plane with a soul, nice
Thanks for the video
thanks James.
The, if memory serves, yard sale find (that I didn't know was such a find in the mid '90's) of my Stanley Sweet Heart No. 80 is a pure pleasure to use when tuned properly. Besides the inherent solidity and built-in quality of the No. 80, my Sweet Heart blade is the standard 2 13/16" wide but is a full 2 7/32" tall and is ground with two cutting edges, not just the one that is standard on today's shorter blades that only have one cutting edge. ("Worn it out by sharpening? Here, we make them. Buy a new one." [From Stanley implied.]) It, (the No. 80 Sweet Heart) when properly tuned, works great. As to the difference in blade dimensions between the old and the new blades, I presume its a reflection of corporate bean counters a' cutting corners where they can and their sales departments looking to increase sales, insurance companies assessing risks and setting rates, greedy lawyers raising the stakes of liability and government bureaucrats never ending quest to find ever more things to regulate to justify their overly and ever expanding fiefdom's.
Love my 80.
Snide comment!...
I just got one of these. And I'm real interested in restoring it
Thanks James! Looking forward to Raleigh MWTCA on Sept 21st
Wish I could be there for that one.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Nice restoration, an interesting tool, thanks for showing!
I just bought a kunz version of the 80. Excited to try it. Also the 80 lost because the 81. Boo sir boo
Short and sweet, this one gets high snarks!
Very cool project.
CBD! Love the content 👍
I would love to see u do a history video of the entire history of hand planes. From as far back as there is records of them. Maybe even recreate them if possible
Way to “chew the cud,” James.😂
if you are not chewing your tong then you are not focusing enough.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo Amen!
The 80 is a serious user....and oft imitated by modern plane makers. If you don't have one, get one. But, the 81.....is for cork sniffers like me who appreciate the finer aspects of making wood curls. Channeling my inner Rex just to be snarky. Ah.....now I feel better.
Would you believe that I just bought an 81 today and I so I go to my favorite channel and you have this video. Mine has a rosewood sole but it’s so thin that the screws are starting to show. I would like to keep the rosewood sole especially since I don’t have any. I was thinking of sandwiching a piece of walnut between the metal and original rosewood. What do you think or do you have any other ideas? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing that!
I have a Record 80 which is really nice. I made a replica one of solid wood with the blade made from an old hand saw. It works well and of course has a wooden ( soul )
If you are doing another on scrapers maybe include devils?
Looks like a good tool. I'm curious if you can make a shop made version of it
here you go. it is old but fun!
Thanks
Thanks!
This video scraped my sole
Nice video!
Really well done, James! 😃
Someday I'm going to make one... But out of wood! Only wood.
Well, except for the screws and the card scraper, of course. 😊
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Saw you @ the Best in the West, we had a great time. I have never been able to find the video you took of the auction. Can you help me?
I was not able to shoot one video, but I did put up a few shorts of some of the items.
@@WoodByWrightHowToThank You!
JPF had some parts for my Sargent autoset. Otherwise, I would have needed to junk it.
Snark Snark!
ferrous wheel?
What angle is there between the sole and the scraper steel?
I am not sure. I never measured it.
Ooh pretty
Nice video. It's all about the soul. LOL.

Banana Splits. 1970’s kid’s show.
between this and stanley no12, which one would you recommend. I just want one scrapper plane in my bag and debating between the two. thanks!
Snarky comment down below…..
What kind of wood did the originals use?
Rosewood
rose wood. but the original endangered stuff.
Snark!
Snarg-a-ram-a
how important is the type of wood for the sole. I have an 81 with a rosewood sole, but it’s in bad shape. I’ve thought of replacing it, but haven’t gotten around to it. What other, common woods would work?
Most any really hard wood will do fine. Rosewood was just the preferred wood back in the day
Whats the name of the file/rasp that has the big half moon like teeth?
That is a curved tooth file.
I actually have a Stanley 81, although I don't use it that often. But I never knew it was meant to have a wooden sole.
As so often with James' videos, a new project presents itself … 🙂

I need to work harder on the snarky comments, I'll give it some thought.

A full restoration of the 81 would be great to see.

Snarky comment. Ok, not really: where do you get replacement scrapers for the 81? I have two; no scrapers.
I just use a card scraper that fits. you can just them out of an old saw plate too.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo ooo I like that. Using up an old saw. Great idea - thanks!
Eighty won! Really? 😵💫
"Snarky comment" :) hehehe
CBD? Or CDB? 🧐
both!
But… the sole is a fish; it’s so confusing…

It might have sole, but it seems kind of fishy to me.
