    The actor who plays the police sergeant (Charles Durning) is a World War II hero: Bronze Star; Silver Star; three Purple Hearts.
    If you want to see him in an entirely different role, singing and dancing, RUclips: “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas - Sidestep Scene.” I believe he was actually nominated for an Academy Award for that little part.

    I worked in the banking industry for almost 20 years. Much of it involved branch operations, vault keeping, and audits. Dog Day Afternoon is one of my all-time favorite movies because (aside from the incredible performances) it's one of the most grounded heist movies ever. They fail almost _immediately._ I've written whole essays explaining to people how vaults work in real life, the logistics of a heist, and how movies rarely ever get them right. This one does. There are several more layers of security in real life, too. Aside from stopping the staff from hitting the alarm and using the bait money, Sonny basically did everything wrong. He didn't stake out the bank and learn the cash shipment schedule himself. They went in there without masks or gloves, and lingered around in plain sight for a few minutes. Sonny was too short to do anything about the cameras, but it didn't matter; they already had him on tape. Even if the 3rd guy hadn't bailed, they still wouldn't have had enough guys to do the job efficiently. Burning the traveler's check register was completely pointless; that's just for record keeping. They could've easily figured out which checks he stole. Even if he _had_ done everything right, there was no way they were getting out of there. Do you know how much a quarter million in 20s weighs? How much space it takes up? I do. I was in charge of ATM stocking for a year, and hauled that much at least twice a week. Stealing a vault's worth of cash is like trying to sneak away while you're lugging 5 or 6 hefty garbage bags full of books. Sonny's plan just wasn't going to happen.

    As someone who has worked in the entertainment industry most of my life, I (but sadly not on this film,) I met the editor Dede Allen many years ago.) She has said that there never was supposed to be ANY music in this film at all. The opening credit song "Amoreena" by Elton John was just supposed to be a editing placeholder for the rough cut of the opening scene, but director Sidney Lumet really liked it and decided to keep it. Also when Sonny asks Sal where he'd like to go, anywhere in the world, Sal wasn't supposed to say anything at all. He improvised and said Wyoming. Director Lumet almost ruined the take because he started laughing. Al Pacino was able to stay in character and pull off his next line. And just a fun note... "Sheldon" was played by James Broderick, the father of Matthew "Ferris Bueller" Broderick. James had a part in another 70's classic "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" (not the stupid remake)

    • @Ocrilat
      @Ocrilat Месяц назад

      On using Amoreena, 1975 was the year Elton John made music history. His first 1975 album, 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy', was the first album to debut at #1 (his second album of the same year, 'Rock of the Westies', also debuted at #1). He was at the top of his career. Having Elton on the soundtrack was a smart move.

      Sully Boyar is the actor's name who played the bank manager in DDA and the older psychiatrist in Sopranos. In fact, Sully is one of the many actors who appeared in both The Sopranos and The Rockford Files, since Sopranos creator David Chase was a writer/producer on Rockford during seasons three through six.

    Thank you for reacting to a masterpiece of 70s American cinema. The two bankrobbers are co-stars in the first two Godfather films which you should definitely react to. Ther are three great filmmakers of New York City-- Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, and Sidney Lumet.

    1960s-1970s: the studio system has completely come apart. Instead of corporations making decisions about films, film-makers made the kind of movies they wanted to make. A gritty realism enters American film making where little had existed before. This movie is chaotic and unpredictable and on purpose. This is what you get when artists make films and corporations keep their sticky little fingers out of production. A movie like this is inconceivable now and we're worse off because of it. Great reaction, Ms Cristy.

    Attica is a state prison in NY. In 1971, there was a riot of the prisoners protesting for better conditions. There was a standoff for 4 days in which over 40 prison workers were held hostage. Police stormed in on the 4th day and 43 people where killed - 33 inmates and 10 employees and guards. It marked a turning point for prisoner rights and cause a big negative reaction towards police in New York and elsewhere - part of the reason why the crowds we cheering for Sonny.

    1. An old friend of mine was an Elton John fan (like me) at the time and told me this movie kicks off with "Amoreena" and I got to watch this movie and loved it. It's the only music in the movie.

    As director, Sidney Lumet definitely knocked it out of the park two years in a row. Dog Day Afternoon touched a fair bit on the media, but his next movie (Network) brought media madness to the forefront. It was made when people still had just a few channel choices, ubiquitous cable was a few years away, and ubiquitous internet another ~20 years away. However, even with its slight hyperbole, Network in some ways foresaw what was to come. Highly recommended as a companion piece to DDA, but most definitely on its own merits.

    About Attica and the shooting of "the innocent and the guilty". It's mostly true. Attica is a prison in upstate New York infamous for a riot in 1971, a few years before the film is set. The prisoners, motivated by severe overcrowding and poor conditions, attacked the guards and took over the complex. The state police were called in and, in the process of retaking the prison, 29 prisoners and 10 guards were killed by the state police. Some of those killed were reportedly not resisting - the police dropped teargas into the prison courtyard and then fire shotguns blindly into the smoke. Others were reported in subsequent investigations to have been executed after surrendering. Sonny had good reason to not want to wind up in prison and Sal had good reason to not want to go back.
    Also, I'm not positive, because there might have been other medications on the market, but I'm pretty sure the reason the guard with asthma doesn't have an inhaler is because albuterol, which is the most common medication used in inhalers, wasn't approved by the FDA until 1982.

    If the guard had an asthma attack, he would not be lying down. You can’t breathe when you’re lying down. You must sit up.

    I guess this is your first Sidney Lumet movie. He directed several excellent films, including 12 Angry Men (1957), The Pawnbroker (1964), Fail Safe (1964), Serpico (1973), Network (1976), The Verdict (1982), and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007).
    John Cazale, who played Sal, was in only five movies. All had Oscar nominations for best picture, and three of them won. The winners were The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), and The Deer Hunter (1978), while The Conversation (1974) and Dog Day Afternoon were "merely" nominated. The Conversation is a favorite of mine - a great film that is often overlooked. Fantastic reaction!!!! Total classic. On recent rewatches, I would have trimmed that writing of the will speech, I feel it slows down the movie when you want to be speeding it up, that's the only thing I'd slightly change, so I'll agree with you on that. Hey, Lumet's NEXT movie is another super classic of the 70s/cinema, might even be better, "Network", a wild satire that is so pertinent to now, and it's a great movie. On the AFI top 100, I think Bryan Cranston did a Broadway version of it recently, incredible cast. ALSO: Both Pacino and John Cazale (who played Sal) are in The Godfather and Godfather Part 2; this is what they did the year after, and their characters in those movies are completely different. So......now you have a great "in" to The Godfather, both actors are superb in both. Definitely put "Network" on your list; I always think of these two movies together, Dog Day Afternoon, 1975 and Network, 1976. (Godfather is 72 and 74. And at the same time as those you got The Conversation, Chinatown, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Carnal Knowledge, etc etc :D. (Also....All That Jazz, from 1979! That's a great one! OH, and Bonnie And Clyde, and The Graduate, and Paper Moon. Oh man, you'd have much to say on every one of those! Scorsese's "After Hours", one of the great 80s NYC at night comedies. Or "The King Of Comedy", another Scorsese/De Niro classic, both of those are really dark comedies. Ok, sorry for all the titles, but that was a great reaction, and this movie always triggers a million other great titles. Definiteily "Network" though!
