- Hey friends, here for a Thanksgiving classic! Join me as I dive into the classic comedy Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Starring Steve Martin and John Candy, this film is a comedy of errors revolving around two unlikely travel companions on a chaotic trip home for Thanksgiving. The mishaps are laugh-out-loud funny, but what stole my heart was the genuine warmth and humanity underlying the humor.

24:34 Loved hearing Meet the Flintstones in Spanish!
John Hughes is the man. I wish Hollywood had more writers like him.
@Bar-Lord, agreed but ironically enough if there were more writers like John Hughes the man himself would've felt less special so I'm thankful we at least had one of him around for as long as we did.
ABSOLUTELY!!
A holiday classic. A s essential to Thanksgiving as "It's A Wonderful Life" is to Christmas.
You must, must, must watch "Uncle Buck" for the perfect John Candy film. I promise you won't be sorry. Cheers.
Totally agree !
*(Uncle Buck) & (The Great Outdoors)*
And Spaceballs
I agree. I think Uncle Buck was his best work.
But, you can't slip on Cool Runnings. That's a great one, too.
A subplot thst got cut from the film was Neal’s wife thinking he was having an affair and that the Del he kept talking about was really a woman. When she saw there really was a Del, she had tears of relief. The wife’s reaction to Neal’s arrival home always eels strange without the affair subplot
Yeah, I always thought there was something "off" about the homecoming scene. The wife acted weird. This would explain why. Thanks for sharing that info.
I just posted the same explanation, not having seen that you beat me to it. 😊
I always thought Hughes should have reshot the ending if he was gonna leave out the affair subplot. He really made Laila robbins look like she made some weird acting choices
@@josephsarto689 Agree. It makes that end scene a little creepy because there's obviously something being unsaid and it detracts from the happy ending.
I disagree completely. Without knowing the subplot, it felt like she was emotional because she's excited to have her husband finally home for Thanksgiving after the whole ordeal. Their home is filled with love and Del is is invited to share in their love but it also reminds him of his own love that he shared with his wife. He looks down to reminisce with a tinge of envy. The whole tears of relief from the wife would have cheapened the moment for me. The way it is, is a bit cheesy, but that's OK, it's a feel good movie about every day life, family, friendship and love.
You should watch Uncle Buck some time. Same director, same actor (John Candy), and a lot of laughs as well.
Great movie. Thank you so very much. Please play "Uncle Buck" with John Candy. Please. Thank you. Have a Blessed Day.
you need to watch 16 candles. John Hughes is reason enough to watch it.
We all love ❤️ & miss you 😢John Candy & John Hughes
Neil’s wife thought he was cheating on her. The original film had more of a reference to this, but since it was so long it was edited out. That’s why when Neil shows up at the end of the movie with Dell, she looks so relieved that he was telling the truth. 👍😆
From what I understand, Hughes shot a ridiculous amount of footage, then edited it down to about 4 hours, then edited that down to the theater release. With a movie like this, though, even 4 hours doesn’t seem like too much. Of course, I’m also one of those people who thinks LotR should have been longer, so… 😄
Oh wow!! That’s so interesting!! I did think it was a little weird that she was just crying out of nowhere apparently..? She was so happy he made it home in time…?
But now it makes sense haha. I wish they left that storyline in the final cut.
I watch this movie every Thanksgiving Eve and every time I watch it, I find something new I find absolutely hilarious.
Another must watch John Hughes movie with John Candy is Uncle Buck.
LOL She called Robert Downey Jr. "Tony Stark."
He is Tony Stark, he's also IRONMAN❤
Another great John Candy film is “Cool Running “ if you like snow or Candy .
I hate that I am becoming a Christy simp.. damnit.. but youre adorable. Great reaction. Just don't throw your cigarette buds on the termec , its dangey
there is a "special edition" DVD ... it has extended & deleted scenes
LOVE the reaction!! :) ♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
the original cut had the wife suspecting he was cheating.
It sets up the wife's actress to look really odd in that last scene.
Great Stuff! And yes " Great Dog Actor" but the big question is ❓ How do you know about the FLINTSTONES especially the theme that's freaking Awesome!! ritahamblin1043 has the must see list. UNCLE BUCK seems to be the crowd favorite!! Awesome reaction and great commentary. Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
That was the Flinstones in Spanish!!
@@CristyReacts I figured and was blown away. The Flintstones came out probably before your parents were born. I watched the re-runs at least 5 times per episode!! Loved The Great Gazoo!! That might be a awesome watch on your channel 😉 Peace 🕊️☮️
Ive seen this movie 100 times. When Dell tells Neil that Marie has been dead for 8 years my eyes get itchy and watery EVERY time! Dammit John Candy!
St.Louis to Chicago is a little over 260 miles . Not terribly long .
Great reaction and wonderful eyes 😋
i find it funny she can remember the name galifinakis but calls robert downey Jr "Tony Stark"
But he is!
For me this is a roller coaster of emotions type movie. Laughter, anxiety, drama, but the end scene where Neil reflects on his journey with Del and realizes something is not right, then he heads back to check on Del only to see him sitting in the station was incredible writing, acting, and directing. I’ve seen the movie in the theater when it first released and probably watched it at 2 times a year till now, and the ending still hits me every time! John Hughes and John Candy were both masters of their craft!
St. Louis , MO to Chicago, IL is about 300 miles / 476 km about 4 1/2 hours driving. Wichita, KS is in the middle of the USA about 711 miles/ 1171 km from Chicago. I like Mash Potatoes .
Steve was around 30 and candy was 27. It’s almost European humor. Not overplayed as I often see in especially American humor. Great movie and Hughes masterpiece in my opinion. The chemistry between Steve and John is unbelievable! I can still laugh at this movie- I’m looking at this for 37 years
love your belly laugh,,,,,,lol
Kind of wish you did *(Ferris Bueller's Day off)* first because there's characters used in both. So I guess you'll recognize them when you do that movie
That bed is a double. In New York, the other man racing to the taxi was Kevin Bacon. There is a game called 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. The fact is you can name movies that have certain cast members to the point where you can connect any celebrity to Kevin Bacon within 6 movies. So Steve Martin and John Candy can be done with just this one movie! 😉😉👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
35:27 Actually the original script - and the directions for the actress are a factor here. This is one of several earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. So when Neal finally makes it home and has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos. The editing also means his wife's acting was a little 'off' as she played it with her suspicions throughout so axing the other scenes makes her seem a little strange to me.
That was fun, nice reaction.
And i have a request, if you've not seen it:
THREE AMIGOS (1986)
Steve Martin, Chevy Chase,
Martin Short.
I think it's the best work any of these guys have ever done.
I think you'd love it.
Peace -
Love from Sydney 🥰
I miss John Candy .
It was definitely a full size bed and Wichita is in Kansas. Don’t worry about it because most Americans don’t even know where Kansas is.
Great reaction!
Dorothy and Toto
Kansas is somewhere under the rainbow that Oz is over.
I served in the Army at Fort Riley, so I know where Kansas is.
How could you say that most Americans don't know where Kansas is!? Obviously it's above North Dakota! Sheesh.
Great reaction!
4444 time stamp
20:13 Steve Martin’s cringing reaction is genuine. John Hughes wasn’t getting what he thought was the best reaction from Steve Martin when they first meet Owen, so in between takes he told the actor to do something that would gross him out, so what’s in the movie is a genuine take.
Another great reaction, Cristy. The best part is you singing “The Flintstones” theme in Spanish. :-)
Haha!! I know them all in Spanish! Sponge Bob, Cat Dog, and other Nickelodeon & Cartoon Network stuff.
He was smoking a cigarette and threw it out the window, but it hit the window and went into the back seat.
I had to share a bed with a guy I didn't know once, at my best friend's wedding, it was his cousin. The next morning is when I found out from him that I snore.
All about life's experiences hey
🚂🚂✈✈🚕🚕
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a hilarious movie! 😅 One of the few Thanksgiving movies. The other Thanksgiving movie I love is a movie called Dutch. It's also hilarious and also about a horrible road trip. It would be cool for you to react to that one but for some reason it's hard to find. Anyway, loved your reaction Cristy ❤ Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! 🦃🥧 If you celebrate it that is 😅
Dutch was also produced by John Hughes 😉
I too just recommended Dutch, but had no clue it was a John Hughes film. Thanks for that.
My daughter passed away 8 years ago and my husband her dad passed day after Thanksgiving. Miss them terribly but still surviving during the holidays.
I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you can find a little joy during the holidays watching these funny films and remembering your family. Warm wishes this holiday season. And a big hug. 🫂
to be fair to del on the sock and underwear issue. neal had seen what he does to a bathroom. why would you put anything to your face in there without looking at it. that one's on neal
Fun and heartwarming movie!
When you think back you're like "ah, beautiful snow." but then you remember "oh, frozen pipes and wind that feels like knives"
Who else comes here for the full-on Valley Girl accent?
My favorite John Hughes is Pretty in Pink. That should definitely be on the list ahead of Sixteen Candles.
Definitely a better movie than Sixteen Candles but not directed by John Hughes, just written by him
Consider Dirty Rotten Scoundrels next.
Steve Martin and the legendary Michael Caine are both hilarious in that film...
Noogies: rubbing the knuckles of your fist on someone's head. Indian burn: grabbing someone's forearm with both hands and twisting in opposite directions.
Cristy looks like Gabrielle Reece, the former model and pro volleyball player. 👍🏼
Great reaction!
Steve Martin recently published a book about his film career. In it, he said that the Director's Cut of Planes, Trains and Automobiles is nearly four hours long! That's because he and John Candy did LOTS of improv during filming! (Still in the vaults, too!)
John Hughes said in an interview that he got the idea for the film from a business trip he took to New York and it took him three days for him to get home to Chicago. He included the Thanksgiving holiday, as it's the busiest travel time of the year.
Happy Thanksgiving! I just subscribed to your channel.
Wichita is in Kansas, pretty sure they mentioned that
I lived in Connecticut most of my life. I miss the snow coming down in Oklahoma City Oklahoma, but don't miss the clean up and discusting look of the sandy snow mounted high and the slushy roads when it starts melting.
Chicago to St. Louis is just about 300 miles.
John Hughes cut a segment of funny dialogue from the script highlighting that. When they’re stopped in the burned wreck of a car by the police officer (played by Michael McKean), the police officer points out that they are in a county about 50 miles north west of Chicago. Meaning Del’s poor sense of direction and inattentive driving have resulted in them having driven an hour past their destination.
I too am still a million bucks shy of being a millionaire.
Great reaction Cristy ike always, I love this movie i haven't seen it in a long time, John Hughes at the peak of his powers, with two masterful comedians at theirs Martin and Candy. There are some fun-facts about it, this movie is inspired by John Hughes’s own hellish trip from New York City to Chicago. Before he became a filmmaker, Hughes worked as a copywriter for the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. One day he had an 11 a.m. presentation scheduled in New York City on a Wednesday, and planned to return home on a 5 p.m. flight that same evening. Winter winds forced all flights to Chicago to be canceled that night, so he stayed in a hotel. A snowstorm in Chicago the next day continued the delays. The plane he eventually boarded ended up being diverted to Denver. Then Phoenix. Hughes didn’t make it back until Monday. John Candy arrived with lots of exercise equipment in tow. On the first day of shooting, the crew brought in treadmills, weights, and other exercise equipment for Candy to use in his hotel suite. Martin said Candy “never went near any of it once.” McClurg who is probably best known as Grace, Principal Rooney’s secretary in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, played the St. Louis car rental employee upon whom Neal dropped 18 F-bombs. For the first few takes, McClurg simply raised her finger and had a standard phone conversation with a customer. Then Hughes told her to improvise talking on the phone about Thanksgiving. In the scene that goes back and forth between Neal trying to sleep next to Del clearing his sinuses and Neal’s watching TV alone in their bed, she is somehow watching She’s Having a Baby, which wouldn’t be released in theaters until February of the following year. Kevin Bacon stars in that movie, and made a cameo in this film as the guy who out-hustles Neal in getting a cab. Some people believe Bacon who was officially listed in the credits as “Taxi Racer” was playing his She’s Having a Baby character, Jake, in that scene. Another cameo was the future Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan that made her acting debut in this movie. She was one of the passengers on the bus ride and couldn’t help but laugh at Martin and Candy’s antics. In the original ending, Del followed Neal all the way home. In the train scene, where Neal thinks about Del and laughs, Martin didn’t know the camera was rolling. To get the new ending he wanted, Hughes and editor Paul Hirsch went back to look for footage they previously didn’t think would be used. Hughes had kept the cameras rolling in between takes on the Chicago train, without his lead’s knowledge, while Martin was thinking about his next lines. Hughes thought Martin had a “beautiful expression” on his face in that unguarded moment, which he inserted into the film. A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2022. Keep up the good work.
That’s two things I’m jealous of you Americans. You celebrate Thanksgiving and you have snow.
Well, John Candy did make it to Jamaica. He was in Cool Runnings as well which was in Jamaica. Such a great comedy. A classic from my childhood.
I adore Steve Martin, mainly his standup comedy and books, but this and The Jerk are classics as well. Just a fun tidbit, there are at least 3 people who play small parts in this that are also in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
These CANS! There's something wrong with these CANS!
Noogie and Indian burn??? Really? sigh
and the smart ones dont speak about the cops .... ooppssss.
my bad....
I'm watching this the night before Thanksgiving with a painful back and I feel so much better after watching this hilarious movie and your side-splitting reaction! I don't think I've seen you laugh as much as I did in this one, Cristy! Plus I learned how to sing the Flintstones in Espanol! Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels. I hope your own cross-country trek goes much more smoothly than this one did!! 😀
Thanks Ron!! Hope you had a great thanksgiving 🤩 I just arrived to Florida today- it was such a long drive but I made it!! Dogs did great!
So enjoyed watching with you!! 😊
Just stumbled across your channel and loved your reaction to this movie! Subbed!
John Candy. The man could make you roll on the floor laughing, or cry because he's so sweet and vulnerable. He died far too young.
I think this is my first exposure to him and I loved it!
With it being the Holidays, 2 must watch IMO are Grumpy Old Men and the sequel, Grumpier Old Men.
If you’re looking for a good Christmas movie, check out It’s A Wonderful Life from 1946.
The Heavenly kid , 80s classic comedy ! React .
It's a double bed. Smaller than a Queen. Just the width of 2 x singles.
Wichita is in Kansas. I served in the Army in Kansas.
Hi Cristy!😊 John Hughes also wrote "Home Alone". That was indeed a full-size bed. Great reactions to this fun holiday buddy film, Cristy!!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
"Road Trip" was obviously inspired by this movie.
Would love to see u do good will hunting, Shawshank redemption, braveheart, gladiator, there’s something about Mary, tropic thunder, silence of the lambs
Six degrees..... Hello 👋🏻
john candy what a god of comedy put him and steve martin together.. and they could have made a knitting documentary funny....
So classic. Mom's homemade stuffing is top tier.
Apparently, you missed an incident that, I thought, was one of the funniest of the movie. When Steve Martin gives his snide remark to the guy at the airport (29:00) where he knocks him down , John Candy tells the guy to help him up. Following that in the car, you didn't seem to realize why his voice changed. Re-check how the guy helped him back up!
Hope you go thru the "John Hughes" catalog..Great Humor, Immense Heart! ❤
John Candy had his first big success in Canadian skit comedy show, "SCTV" - look it up for some great laughs.
Some of my favorite comedies of all time are from this era. This movie, Ferris Buelller's Day Off, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and A Fish Called Wanda.
Great reaction ! 1 more vote for "uncle Buck" it's a must watch movie. 👍
Dutch is a very below the radar Thanksgiving movie. Last time I checked, I believe there was only 1 reaction video to it. Stars Ed O'Neil in it
It’s a full bed… Yikes.
13:38 LOL I would be pissed. 😂😂😂
Hey you Its Jackie u have your own channel that is great so excited I kept thinking u looked familiar How funny love you
Yes yes YES!!! A great reaction to one of my all time favorites from school, this is one we watch the evening before Thanksgiving to set the mood. (Thanksgiving Day evening it's Die Hard, Black Friday evening it's Christmas Vacation. Lol).
Oh gosh favorite dish... Hard to say, my wife makes an amazing pecan pie, and I love deep fried turkey though peanut oil is $$$ these days.
Thanks for an awesome channel! You're a mood lifter!!
Have a great Thanksgiving
I work in film and worked with Dylan Baker on "Return to Lonesome Dove" in Montana. I drove him crazy "Fan Boying" him over his Owen character...one of my favorites all time... In a weird turn I now live in NYC and Dylan goes to my gym so we talk about the old filming days sometimes.
Ha! You didn't grow up in the 70s or 80s. An "Indian Burn" is where you rub your hand on somebody's arm until it kinda hurts. A "Noogie" is where you thump somebody's forehead with a knuckle. Just things we used to do
Rip to the great one of a kind, john candy. John Hughes, could write movie scripts so fast! Anything john was in was great. Blues Brothers stripes Brewster's millions home alone uncle buck Splash, and on and on. Mostly he had small parts but watch any movie he starred or costarred in. Next should be uncle buck, then stripes. Pro tips...steve martins partner in this is ferris buellers dad! Kevin bacon was in another movie based on this character, He said She said! The plane announcer guy is ferris buellers teacher! The car rental lady is ferris buellers principals assistant! She was a personal friend of Hughes and suggested a clerk do a phone call scene in front of steve. So Hughes gave her the part and it was completely unscripted...she addlibbed the whole thing! The cartoon family guy, does the greatest parody of their motel room arguement scene! The song in the car is by ray Charles, the song he or the kid is jamming to in uncle buck, is also ray Charles!
The End freeze frame the exact same as uncle Buck!
This was Neil's Groundhog day. He had to learn something, before he could get home.
The handshake scene with spit tobacco, was addlibbed, steve martins reaction is real! The song in the car john is jamming to, is by Ray Charles. In uncle Buck, either him or the kid is jammin to another Ray song!
Family guy does the best parody of the arguement bedroom scene!❤. The scene of different faces that steve alone on the train, Hughes just rolled, and didnt tell steve, he was filming! Also the movie was about 45 minutes longer but with a subplot.. Neils wife thinks he's cheating and completely makes up the Del story. When he walks through their front door, she had a surprised and shocked look on her face. He basically saved their marriage! Hughes wrote in other movies, even with Candy, he wasnt credited for such as Animal House, Caddyshack and Stripes, which candy was also in. His next movie he wrote specifically with Candy in mind, Uncle Buck!
Wichita, KS is two states and 700 miles SW of Chicago. St Louis, MO is on the border of Illinois, but it's still a 300 mile drive north. Best part of the meal for me is the pumpkin pie; someone brought green bean casserole this year and the turkey was good, otherwise I'm not really a fan. If I was Del on my own I'd have gone to a hotel near a Chinese restaurant.
A nuggie is when you rub your finger joints it knuckles on someone’s head. Normally a child’s. And an Indian burn is where you take someone’s arm and wrap your hands around it and twist/rub back and forth creating a friction burning sensation. Again normally fine to kids. They’re actually forms of affection. Not done to actually hurt but to have fun.
You don't want knoogies, its when someone rubs there knuckles back and forth on the top of your head.
She doesn't know what a noogie or an Indian burn is, what a Zoomer! :D
41:30 She's emotional not only because he's home, but because she thought he was cheating on her and making up the crazy stories about Del. Seeing Del was confirmation that Neal was telling the truth. This was a subplot in the original script that was deleted from the final cut. So in an ironic twist, Neal going back for Del saved his own marriage.
loved john candy went away too soon.
Great reaction
Original run time was 4 hours. They edited out a sub plot where the wife thought he was cheating and lying about why he was late. As to the emotional response she’s he’s home.
