Potholes Wildlife Area - Washington State

The Potholes Wildlife Area is situated within a vast 40,000-acre reservoir with over a thousand islands. Most of the islands are composed of sand dunes that were flooded as part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. There are a few outcroppings of lava rock and sandstone left behind by the Ice Age floods, but almost all the terrain is a vast carpet of soft sand dotted with pockets of thick vegetation. The intricate maze of water and sand can be difficult to navigate, but is a favorite hangout for a huge variety of creatures both big and small.
