Where's DankPods when you need him? Also, I think you should contact My Mate Vince to see if he can try fix it because he manages to fix a lot of things so I think the iPod is a good idea.
With that last ipod, the FireWire cable uses a much higher voltage than the usb cable, which can sometimes be what the hard drive needs to run effectively (they can run on 3v-30v if I remember correctly), and it delivers slightly more power (somewhere around.4 watts I think), so if the hard drive needs that extra kick to run, it might be the case that usb just isn’t powerful enough/high enough voltage to charge and power it, I also have an ipod docking system that’s has been able to deliver power on the same level as FireWire, so this seems in line with what you’re experiencing
And for the deeper scratches on the screens, I would recommend sandpaper and wd40, starting at 1000 grit and going up, then brasso, the brasso alone is too fine to remove the deeper scratches
My iPod 5th gen had the same problem as the white slim one with the offset center button rubber piece. I just moved it back and applied some adhesive and it’s worked great since. I love when you work on some classic apple tech, would love to see a resto of something like an iMac G3 or the likes of.
Just use a multimeter to measure the USB VBUS voltage. After that check for broken caps or resistors in the Power management area. In the 5/5.5 gen the Philips PCF50607 is used for power management. It has an I2C bus and a 10bit ADC. But the LTC4066 LDO and USB Power Management/Lipo charger could also be a potential candidate. We can rule out the TEA1211HN Buck Converter because the iPod still works.
Great video. I am also comtemplating replacing the damaged battery connector. Would you suggest attempting it? I broke it while changing the battery. Thanks

Hi Hugh! I love your videos! It’s great to see how far you’ve come! I remember in 2017 you would fix tooonnnssss of iPhone 4. I’m currently fixing up my iPad mini 3. It’s an absolute nightmare. The speakers aren’t working after I’ve replaced them. The scores are in. And suggestions? Love your vids. Keep up the great work. I also had an iPod classic 3rd gen doing the same FireWire thing. Keep up the great work!
Hugh, the iPods have clips that you need to unclip with an thin prying tool shoved between the frame and backcase. You’ll notice that they will be easier to open.
With the firewire only board you should try just cleaning it up with alcohol toothbrush all over the board, sometimes helps if there's some tiny bits of corrosion on there to just clean it up
I think the FireWire one is working fully... some of the older iPods worked only with FireWire and not with usb due to Apple wanting to go with their standard on FireWire to provide better speeds than the usb at the time.
1:43 Hang on, _physical_ mechanical hard drive? As opposed to? No hate intended, it just stuck out to me. Great repair, and keep practicing with board-level repair, saves a lot on buying whole replacement parts

Great videos. I've got a 30gig 5th gen that has the same issue, no data/sync over USB. Tested the data pins from USB cable to the motherboard and they are fine. Did you get any more insight into what the board issue could be that's preventing data/sync over USB? I'd love to restore this iPod that completely works otherwise.
Hello, Hugh, I am starting a phone and electronics repair shop and want to ask you: where do you get your parts from? I mean, sure, ifixit is a good place but there is not everything at one place all the time there. Could you recommend a good wholesale (preferably European) site for cell phone parts?
To polish the plastic, you should try Novis plastic polish and cleaner. Model builders use it to take scratches out of the plastic windshields in their models.
