When I was a kid I used to love engine 51's airhorn. I'm now 52 years old and I still do.

Cool thing of this clip ? Is I saw the Fire Fighter air bottle on a mount opposite of the back jump seat . Back when I served they were in the back part of our engine seats to help make it better to suit up with while in route to the Fire scene. I served as a Volunteer Fire Fighter in the county here where I live back in the 80's and our station was number 1 in the county for fire calls and second on medical calls in the county.

I just saw an interview with Randolph Mantooth - he discussed the helmets being worn while rolling with siren/lights - which was the policy of the LA fire department during the show. However those helmets are designed to protect your head from falling debris and to let water run off without soaking your clothes (in the back) - not for riding in cars (so they tended to bounce off the inside of the squad/fire engine ALOT). After the EMERGENCY producers complained during and after the show about the stupid policy - it was eventually changed.

Actually just witnessed this scene live! While getting some Breakfast Tacos at Bill Miller's Restaurant SAFD Station #51 got a call, just as the last one ordered. Having worked in Emergency Services, I know it would have bigger news if they had been able to eat.

Did you know that there were no paramedics in San Antonio before "Emergency!", but we've had them ever since, so the show left its mark on the city.

Doesn't a back injury call usually consist of a squad and an ambulance? Why would they consider sending an Engine? I know that all personnel are trained as FF/EMT but it just seems strange sending that particular unit for said call.

Just the same for a heart case sometimes. The extra manpower would be handy, if need be.

All runs back then had an engine and squad respond. I think the show didn’t have the engine respond sometimes was to reduce costs. I don’t remember this episode off the top of my head so I don’t know why the engine responded.

      1) it's a TV show. 2) in reality it would be per department protocol.

Amazing, when people like #Trump & #Republicans supported EMS! As a veteran of law enforcement, what an amazing progressive time frame.
