thanks for the info I'm only 13 and don't have money for a boat and watching you catch a musky in that size river makes me more confident and know i know where to go thanks again
I hooked into a muskie in a local creek here in Knox County, TN today. It came unhooked. Not sure if i could have landed it. 4 lb line on a small spinning combo, no leader. It sure was fun fighting it for those 30 seconds to a minute. Crank bait.
As an alternative to pliers, thin long foreceps can be bought cheap online or in stores. Ive found them useful for handling lures in general too, like gripping the lip or removing a hook from a metal loop Also regarding fish mortality, my understanding is they can swim away and die hours or days later from the injury or stress or loss of slime (handling with dry hands). I try to keep that in mind, that even if a fish swims away fine I may have still handled it worse than I could have. Reading your govt fishing handbook can be very educational, not just to avoid breaking laws but tips to reduce mortality risk and helpful information for improving success rates.
I'm getting my first heavy power rod ❓ is the UGLY stick GX2 Heavy power moderate fast Action rod. There in 6' to 8' rod size I like. But the 8' is hard for me. I've trout fish only for years. But last year I've been working on bigger Bass, catfish, northern pike, and musky fishing.
Back in 2009 I was throwing around a pumpkin yamatamo sinko plastic at Marsh Creek State Park in Chester County Pennsylvania . I had just got into bass fishing from the shore. I had some varied success but plenty of action for a newbie. I was using an entry level Okuma spinning set up with some cheap 10lb mono line. I was fishing next to some students from West Chester University who were attending the same program I graduated from 15 years earlier so the mood was extra mellow and the bass and pan fish were bitting….On one of my cast my retrieve came to a dead stop there was no screaming of the drag indicative of a bass strike. This was a tug of war and yet felt like I was pulling up anything from a log to the bottom of the lake. I knew It was a fish but what the hell was it. I had experience fighting some monster blue fish and some large fluke. As I kept reeling the line the beast at the end of my line decided to reveal itself. It was a 4 foot long green and black tiger muskie. I reeled it up to the lake shore taking note that it looked very angry and well armed with those sharp teeth. I can honestly say this is a story about how I got away!!! All these years later, I am interested in catching and releasing these magnificent fish with minimal harm.
I had a very similar experience as you with a big pike. I had very light line trying to catch small bass as a complete newbie from the bank. Suddenly I'm in a tug of war, trying to not break line while afraid if I let much drag then it will get tangled in the weeds. Seeing its face reeled in was a shock. It was very angry! The adrenaline lasted for hours. I was lucky it didn't snap the line and was able to unhook it despite not knowing what I was doing. Tried to get it back in the water ASAP. Gave me a new respect for these fish. Now I know better about leaders, bought forceps, how to handle them properly, etc..
Completely agree you onky need a few lures, I would add a rubber in their like a medussa or bulldawg. Also hook cutters spare hooks and heat shrink, none of thos will break the bank but will save a fish cutting a hook , and adds life to a banged up bait when you need a new hook or two
Yeah, extra hooks and split rings are super handy. And I meant to say something about hook cutters or at least pliers with cutters built in, but I guess I forgot.
To anyone reading this, husky jerks are your best friend. You can get 3 of them for the price of a normal Muskie lure, and they hold up relatively well. I’ve been Muskie fishing for 10 or so years and it’s still one of my go to’s, especially on a slow day.
no no and no use the original floater the wobble is much better I do the same lol fuck throwing a 17 inch lure all day for only big fish to look at. I will throw small baits but not very often

Nice catch. Great job with the fast release. Nothing will be better for the future of the sport than keeping the fish alive. Awesome!

Musky Messiah. A local guy in West Virginia made them, but I don't think he does any more.
