  • The musky is deemed the fish of 10,000 casts for a reason, there are far fewer muskie than other species, muskie don’t feed constantly, and their habits are relatively unknown. These elusive fish are often at the top of the food chain in their respective body of water. With rows of razor sharp teeth and an anatomy built for speed, muskie have no issue eating what they want, and when they want. In this video Matt from SBFishingTV shares some of his top tips he's learned throughout his time muskie fishing.

Good job, Matt. You've come a long way as a muskie man in the last 2 years.
The only thing I'll disagree with you here is those dang Boga Grips. They should be banned, in my opinion. They do more damage to fish than they're worth. I see to many fisherman using Boga Grips as a handle to lift the fish vertically and hang them by their lower jaw. Never weigh a muskie unless you weigh it inside the net and then subtract the weight of the net from the total weight. This method supports the fish out of the water and doesn't put weight or pressure on the fishes spine like vertically hanging them with a Boga Grip does.

I would argue you should have some type of hook cutting tool almost anytime you're on the water. I have had some pretty close calls with rattle traps, and other treble baits.
9/10 times, it's the little bass, pike, etc. because they thrash like crazy.

Excellent video with fantastic tips for a beginning Music fisherman like myself. My Dad would take us on fishing trips to No. MN, but we never had time for Muskie. Our directive was to "fill the freezer chest!" So, I had to focus on panfish. :( I am 52 years old now, and hope to cAtch a muscle before I die.

Big Powerful Fish (Musky) but SUPER SENSITIVE! Northern Pike you just throw them back and they just thrash and swim off resiliently. Providing they don’t deeply swallow your bait and thrash and start to bleed out.

As far as strikes near the boat, I can remember my brother always scolding me for letting the Northern Pike we were fishing for near the outboard motor where they could tangle and break the line. He always retrieved quickly, and in my opinion, didn't give the fish a chance to strike in its comfort zone, which was literally in the shadow of the boat.
I believe that simply slowing down your retrieve, or making the figure-eight will triple the number of strikes you get (from predatory fish like Northern & Muskie) over your buddy, who uses a fast, non-stop retrieve.

MTB should certainly be able to offer up at least one lure for the price point of the basic monthly subscription to the box. I target this fish along with pike, as the lake I'm on has a large population of both. Your video is very good, and the baits you call out are quite typical. Why not offer up the discount pricing you offer, even if it's one lure in the box each month? I'm sure you get lots of panfish, trout, walleye, bass guys but how about us guys hunting fresh water barracudas who would like to see some new logs to toss?

Personally I think it’s better to catch and release both to preserve the fishery and out of respect to the fish. Also Musky are hard to catch, so I want to leave that fish for another day/angler, but to each their own. Tight Lines!
