- An overview on how I use my ShapeOko 2 CNC router by Inventables to create wood inlay. This video covers exporting art from Adobe Illustrator and importing it into Easel, a new browser based 3D application by Inventables. I show how this can add embellishment to a bandsaw box and create wall hanging art.

I've been planning on doing a video on Easel, but there's no need.. you did great! Nicely done
Thanks Bob!
Just want to thank you and Bob At I like to make stuff. I just purchased this this CnC router because of you guys. I am going to start assembling the unit this weekend. Again thank you!!!!
Awesome!! It's super fun!
I finally decided to get the shapeoko and have put it together. I've played around with it a little bit and am loving it so far.
+MonkWerks with Fr. Thomas how are you? i am goodday. i want need student doing work at carpenter.
Best simple runthrough from design, through to setup of zero and then to cut that I've seen for ShapeOko 2 so far. Awesome job.
Thanks!! Much appreciated!
This is a blast from the past!!
The Shapeoko line has come a long way with the Shapeoko Pro and Shapeoko HDM that are now available!!
I don't know about anybody else, but I really enjoyed this video! I don't own a CNC but this definitely makes me want to get one. I do have a couple of questions David. Do you think the servos on the CNC would be strong enough to support a small shop vac hose alongside the bit? Did you get any video of you assembling the CNC? If so, are you planning on making a video on the assembly? Thanks, great video!
If you're not supporting the full weight of the hose off the z-axis, then it will be fine. I have a vacuum hose on my setup.
I agree Nick Ferry This opens a TON of options to enhance projects!
Winston answered your first question. He has a ton of great vids on the ShapeOko. I did not get any video assembling it. It took me around 10-12 hours to put it together.
Thank you for demystifying this process and showing some of the buttons and fields in the software programs, plus showing the real world machine tips really appreciate this!! Of course doing it by hand is cool, but when this isn't your full time job and other home and family responsibilities compete for time it is nice to know how to save time when needed.
Drunken Woodworker you are an artist, congratulations. I'm from Brazil
The inlay on the band saw box is great, it really looks classy and like it belongs there as opposed to something just added on. Couple suggestions on the cnc. If you use a v bit to draw a few strategic lines in your spoil board then it's easier to get the stock lined up. You know the lines will be parallel and perpendicular because you are using the machine itself to draw them. Also if you mirror the male part of the inlay then if it's in many pieces then you can glue it into the pocket as one unit just by cutting around it rather than ending up with a whole bunch of little pieces.
Thanks!! Good tips! I need to get a bit!!
David!!! I've been a huge fan and subscriber for about 5 years now. I love you and your videos and my neighbor gave me an Shapeoko 2 to play with I wanna get it up and running and "make something" with It. I love that you have this video on your channel even if it is 6 years old!!! Keep makin videos I watch every one of them!!!
Thank you for posting this. I have a Shapeoko 3 on the way and have been messing with Easel and AI to figure out the best method for inlays. Glad I found this!
Thanks! I've got a loaned, broken shapeoko 1 at home that I've been fixing for a friend, and now that it's "working" I needed to figure out HOW to make it work.. This is the first useful video I've seen on the subject... AND.. my own Shapeoko 3 should be just a few weeks away too, so now I've got some ideas!!
Man the Shapeoko 2 is a classic!! I'm a Shapeoko 3 XXL owner and it's great to see the foundation of the CB3D.
35 years ago, I used to repair and retrofit Industrial CNC machines. I found this video interesting to watch. Without the feedback from servos, I suspect the lead screws are driven with stepping motors. I could almost see building one of these for the entertainment value. Keep your bit sharp and don't cut too deeply or the motors may stall and the bit will slowly loose it's position in reference to the starting point. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the tips!
Impressive results. Didn't look like it was going to be so nice. Post sanding, I was impressed.
Thanks for showing the process and what your CNC machine can do. Very helpful.
David, Very thorough explanation of the CNC process on this project. I have seriously considered adding a CNC routing capability to my shop but the price and complexity of operation must be within my budget and ability. Thanks you.
subscribed! you have reignited CNC project hopes in me by shedding light on this company. you're the best
craft hobbies are so much more fun than Netflix
I've been waiting anxiously to see your shapeoko get built and start running. Man, I haven't even scrounged up the cash to buy the laser engraver I want, and you already got me wanting a CNC machine. I'm glad you got yours together, and I can't wait to see what you can do with it. Did you get the mid priced bundle?
Thanks! I got the $650 bundle and that includes everything you need. I believe I've seen people upgrade their ShapeOko with a laser kit.
Drunken Woodworker Thanks for letting me know about that. I never would have thought about it, I will be looking into that for sure!
Very nice overview on the software. CNC would be awesome to add to my shop! I'm excited to see how you continue using it in later projects
Great videos and no annoying music drowning out your instructions!
It was a great and very clear explanation of the process David, thank you!
Wow that's pretty cool. Very affordable. My old job I programmed and ran a CNC for a cabinet shop. It was a fun little job.
Excellent overview. I was really curious about the software and operational overview. Thanks so much for posting. May have to fit a CNC into my shop now.
Looking for vids on CNC milling using a Dremel (I'm a newbie to woodworking) brought me here. OMG I love what you make! And the timber you use! Also your logo - in particular how it's placed in your website nav menu. Anyways now I've got lots to learn and create, and many, many hours of inspiration here to watch. Thank you :)
Right on! Thanks Nikki and welcome aboard!
That came out great! Very fine inlay.
The straight down cut technique you are showing, for me, is far more better than the V Carve inlay technique, despite the fact that other people have claimed "V Carve is better than straight down cut because it can achieve sharper corner". What do you think?
Very nice! Congrats!
Thank you! You inspire me!
Legal !
Ultra Cool David,
Thank you for the overview.
Regards,
Bob
Very good information and explanations, great video thanks David.
Nice work. I have a shapeoko v1 which I haven't used much, but this gives me since great ideas! Thanks!
Use it!! It's so much fun!
Dale Hawkins Wow, I didn't know these existed for mortals. Thanks for sharing. Did you start from the base kit that needed you to get parts?
Wow thats exciting and simple to use. I have been watching mtmwood on youtube he is a cutting board maker in russia and uses a cnc machine to do lots of inlays in his work and they are awesome too! Take a look sometime and get more cool ideas! Keeo up the good work!!
I've featured mtmwood a few times on my weekly wrap-up show. Love his stuff.
Thats awesome! I just got the new Xcarve and havent finished putting it together yet.. quite inspiring.
Good to see Wein again.
High quality video , enjoyed it.
Hopefully i will order the shapeoko soon...
Regards from Greece.
Thanks! It's a good machine. Regards from the States!
David, if you use a piece of paper when setting your z you can get it very close.
I was wondering how the wood was staying in place while the CNC router was on. Double-sided tape completely slipped my mind. Interesting.
I also like your dog. He just looks so unimpressed by being on camera.
Thanks! He did not enjoy being on the workbench. He was paid in treats.
Drunken Woodworker In my experience, treat bribes go a long way towards resolving disagreements.
You might consider making the Weens template available for people who want to use it. Dunno why they wouldn't just use their own dog (or whatever), but it can't hurt.
I like your name 'make something, very encouraging.
This is the video I have been waiting on!! thanks.
Wow, love it. Hope to see more CNC project videos 👍👍👍👍
Fascinating post David. Exciting to see the CNC up and running. How is the learning curve? Do expect to use the CNC often in your projects?
That was very interesting. Thanks mate
It Just makes me think about the possibilities.. maybe one day
I hope you're happy with yourself.... Just placed an order for a ridiculously upgraded Shapeoko 2....
:) Send me the bill.
Dang! Now I'm REALLY wanting one of these.
ojonglionel
Perfect video, thanks for sharing, greetings from Iran to you.
Thanks!
I have been waiting for you to show off your CNC router so thank you for making this video. The price is much more affordable than the larger versions offered. Did the purchase include the software linking the PC to the machine?
Hi John. All the software is free.
Thanks for sharing all your process. Questions: How often do you go through the drilling bits? does the dremel have to be replaced often as well? And, is it possible to cut all the way through instead of sanding one half and engraving the other half?
WOW! This is a shit hot bit of kit! I look forward to more of your CNC router projects....hopefully? N.
Thanks!
Man that is awesome, I have been thinking about a CNC for months now. I can see how I could use this, it gave me some ideas. I also have been wondering if I should get the 1000x1000 but I think the 500x500 might be what I "should" start with
Very informative video, thanks a lot! :)
Very cool Dave Drunken Woodworker Do you have plans to upgrade to a router instead if the dremal spindle? Thanks for sharing!
I do have plans to upgrade to a higher quality spindle like this: www.inventables.com/technologies/quiet-cut-spindle
Great video. I really enjoyed watching the process. More of the same...please!
Nice work... !
You sound like John C Reilly but I really like what you did here. Awesome job!
nice work and a great toy
Great job! I wonder how to make that perfect fit without any software allowance
Now I understand the name "Drunken Woodworker." For some reason you see your dog only having TWO legs!!
Wow, great video Dave. It certainly seems easier than I thought it would be... that's what's been keeping me on the fence is the learning curve. Hope you plan on doing some more videos on it.
Thanks John! Inventables makes it a lot easier with their software.
Beautiful
You should do a ying and yang bandsaw box :)
Can you make a twisted oak tree with that machine. how do you get a picture into your photo shop to do the carving into a twisted oak tree. that shape Oko 2 is like magic.
Hello friend very nice video ... I could say the name and brand of your router blade ... thanks for sharing and greetings ...
I'm surprised the fit was so snug. Usually the bit runout means your pockets come out oversized, and your profiles come out undersized. I will have to try this out for myself.
Hi Winston! I've watched just about every video you have on the ShapeOko. Thanks so much for making them! I burry the bit in the spindle as far as I can to reduce runout.
Are there higher quality rotary tools that have little to no runout? It may not be a big deal for simply routing out designs, but seems important for doing lots of inlay work.
I wonder what an aluminum inlay in wood would look like.....
So cool!
wow! i need that to put crimson tide logos on everything
Inspired. Thanks
Hi Can you please tell me what bit I am looking for to do this project I have the same Dremel but am a bit bothered as to shaft diameter, bit Length, bit type, I have never bought a bit like this so would like to be able to cut wood, plexyglass ,Nylon great work you do Thank You
Have you tried to route out your logo on a project with the shapeoko? I'm looking for a good way to brand my items. Just wondering if you've given it a shot, and think it would be a good way to do it.
That is very nice. For the price you paid that is awesome. I'm saving my money. What kind of run time did you have for each piece?
Tom Pritchard runtime around 20 minutes for the first piece and 10 minutes for the second.
Thanks
Cnc's are really cool and im surprised to see under 100 views on one of your videos
Great video!!!!
nice project...what mill bit have u used in CNC..
david, many thanks for showing how the software works. very informative. how long did the cutting procedure take?
is there the option to use a ball mill and prepare freeform surfaces in easel?
The first piece took about 20 minutes and the second piece took about 10 minutes. I don't think Easel has that capability but there's plenty of other software that does.
Love the Weenz inlay haha
Thanks!
have you heard of legacy cnc? if you want to do large scale production I'd get Legacy's Artisan II.
While watching this video my wood worker in me blew on the screen trying to blow all the dust off while it was being cut out haha
GraemeT99 Ha! I totally understand that feeling!
thank you! Subbed
Great work! That walnut block is beautiful. Any recommendations for online wood stores?
+Jesse Gimbel how are you?
i am live in cameroon.
ojong lionel
I'm not bad, how are you?
Did you purchase the mechanical kit or the complete kit? Did you do any upgrades to your Shapeoko 2?
I got the $650 kit. No upgrades.
Thanks for sharing, I've been thinking on getting one. Question on your material mounting,
doesn't the foam tape change the cutting depth?
I am seriously looking into purchasing one of these machines but I can't see myself putting out up to 1600 dollars with shipping for an X-carve. Can you tell me if the unit you are using on this video worth it and what the differences are with Shapeoko and X-carve besides the size and price. Can one do the same as the other? thanks for sharing and thanks for any tips. I also see that your table doesn't have holes for hold down clamps.
We are consider purchasing the Inventibles new cnc for our business. Do you think it would hold up to daily use with hardwoods like maple and oak and using it for full on "machining" where we have do holes and complete cut-outs in 1" material?
JennifersSongs I think it would hold up just fine! They are very friendly folks and are quick to answer any questions you may have.
ShapeOko is very cool , but i want to know more about your drum sander , is it a shop made one ? Do you have a video of how you build it?
Damian E Cabrera Toledo It's made by Jet and can be found here: amzn.to/1lQW2rE
Hi David, great video and CNC! I've checked the Inventables website and don't see any reference to whether I need a Windows(PC) or an Apple(Mac) based computer. I only have two old PCs available in my shop. One is Vista and one is XP. What is your computers operating system? Thank man! Charlie
Windows or Mac. Doesn't matter. You will need an internet connection because the software is browser based.
I'm guessing you could use a planer instead of a drum sander to get it flush? You'd probably just be removing more material?
great video sir will Easel work on most cnc machines i have built mine from openbuild site its the ox build will this work this is what iam looking for as iam a beginner
what brand or type of machine will this work on ?
Hey Dave, great vid. What software do you use for your screen recording on the computer?
Thanks!! iShowU HD.
how low price is this wonderfull machine ?
Hi there, Thanks for the informative video of the shapeoko2. Where can I pick one of these up? I called shapeoko and they only offer the shapeoko3 now - which is astronomical in price compared to the previous model. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
The newer version is actually called the X-Carve. Check out www.inventables.com
Love your vids! More cnc stuff would be even more awesome! I just ordered the X-Carve
David, thanks for the video. I just got my Shapeoko 2 assembled and am ready to test it out. I see you used Chrome to use Easel. Do you know if you can use a Chromebook with the Easel software?
I'm not sure but my guess is yes.
Drunken Woodworker I am not sure, it needed to download and install something. Only offered Windows or Mac options and I cannot run the executable on the Chromebook.
Mike Kapotsy It runs in the browser.
Like Jeff said, it runs in the browser. No need to download anything. Just plug the ShapeOko into your computer and navigate to easel.com
When you login to easel.com it immediately requires you to download a file for windows or Mac (easel local). That was the download I was referring. Not sure of it is required to run it. Also, there is an arduino driver required. Cannot install that on a chromebook. Not sure it will work to do everything on a chromebook including controlling the shapeoko.
Hello! This machine can engrave LINEAR ( STRAIGHT LINE ) on rectangular wood board
on the edges by all the corners ? Fits 18 "long X 14" wide X 1 "thick.? Thank you!
The second workpiece must be processed counterclockwise. Then the edge of the finished items will be smooth and not ragged.
Veeeerrry Nice!
hi, whats the name of the tool for the dremel you used?
What is the name of your CNC machine and what is the name of your machine for sanding wood :)?
nice job
who is program use for that
nice tools about that :D
