I have the X-Carve 1000 and never used the idea of double sided tape to hold a wood board. What brand seems to be the best for this. When not to use double sided tape and use the hold down clamps????

Hey Tom the Easel software from Inventables will set the speed, feed rate etc based on the material you select, you can play around with it for free as well.
Dustin Penner A down cut bit is a great idea. It's the motor variable speed? I would think that different speeds would work better on different types of stock.
The X-carve has a variable speed spindle if i'm not mistaken. Its always nice to have options when cutting, but variable speed isn't vital to good cuts. Pass depth and feed rate are the two things to keep in mind.
+Stefan M The power pack is switchable and will work up to 245. You can easily buy your own form somewhere like Maplin for about £20 which reduces cost of the X-carve and shipping.

It's quite a neat machine but the spindle doesn't seem very good, from what I can tell it is just a standard 24 motor with a collet chuck attached with a set screw, that means it doesn't really have good enough bearings for any serious work, it certainly sounds like it. The super glue technique is handy though, I might have to use that one. You could of course face off the excess on the router rather than use a sander as an alternative if you wanted a more specific end thickness.
***** There are different spindle options when purchasing. You could also get it without the spindle and use whatever you want. I do have a drum sander that makes removing the excess very quick but wanted to show that you could use a handheld. Thanks for watching!

I had another look and the Bosch router is not a bad option, it's a shame there are not many options for lower price spindles with nice collets, it looks like the standard version does at least use ER collets which are great because they close over a range.
Do you even g-code bro? Lol jk but seriously if you want to explore more advanced functionality of tool paths and achieve better surface finish and high level 3d surfacing aka 2.5d on a cnc router you should look at a proper cam package to develop those skills they will come in handy for many other machines than just a cnc router. Anyway love seeing your build videos and I'm a big fan of what you do keep up the good work!

How would this cnc carve letters on a cylindrical object like a baseball bat? That would be my main use if I get one.

Unless I'm looking in the wrong places - I cannot find any information on the Z cut depth - it doesn't look like very much? 2.5" or so max?

Is that a camouflage belt sander? How does pine hold up to the x carve? I would think there would be some blow out with softer woods.
It all depends on the bit you're using I've cut large pine signs with a down cut bit and I didn't need to sand them.

why not mill out a pocket then cut out the letters and glue them in the pocket, like an inlay?

+TTate it's not always about cutting because a laser that is under powered can cut into a piece rather than all the way through it.
