Larry Lujack was a legendary Top 40 DJ, who spent most of his radio career on the one-time iconic radio station 89 WLS the 50,000 watt blow torch. Thanks for sharing this vintage aircheck from the super 70's.
I love listening to old air checks- It is my Geeky hobby. like a time machine- I remember this moment like it was yesterday Blizzard of 78 -No school !! building igloos and snow-mobiling -Always waited for the school closing alerts. What a fine moment that was hearing your district! WLS in Chicago ~🌆
Winter of 78'. In the 8th grade listening to Uncle Lar' before school from East Tennessee. The nightime signal still holding at 6AM. Good ole radio days.
Wow. I used to collect the weekly WLS survey. All the school buses had The Big 89 on the radio. There was nothing better than listening to WLS while in the fields outside Lafayette, Indiana.
I was 9 years old living in Rockford just now of Chicago..my grandfather had a small transistor radio a 9V Panasonic am only I used listen every night and after school wls and wbbm were my favorite station through out my teen years
Grew up on this radio station! Listened from Winnebago, IL (outside of Rockford). I didn't have my own radio and my mom's kitchen radio and car radio were set to WGN and I was NOT to change it! So I got a good dose daily on the school bus radio. Fall of '77 I started attending a Lutheran school in Rockford so it wasn't until about this time (Jan 1978) I discovered WLS again as my dad bought us a new stereo for Xmas which had a turntable, 8 track player and AM/FM radio! I remembered "eighty nine" and found it one day and was back in love with WLS radio! A few months later my mom got me a portable radio so I'd stop playing with the stereo! LOL! I'd sit outside in the summer on back steps with it plugged in to the outside outlet and sun myself. Great memories!
Yeah don't we all miss the real music from the 70s not the crap they have today like shoop dogg really crap lol.. just what the heck happen to our music? I feel sorry for the younger generation of people today they just don't know what real music is today.
I lived and breathed WLS and 'CFL in the 1960s and 70s. Frequently won various and sundry merchandise from their call-in giveaways. Little known fact: Lujack retired in Santa Fe, NM and he made a whole body donation to the University of New Mexico in ABQ upon his death. His remains were returned to the family upon completion. Thank you SO much for posting this air check, including the music, news and ads!
We picked up WLS and WCFL here in Connecticut..I was on the air in Connecticut in those days..loved listening to those stations at night including CKLW in Windsor, ON/ Detroit..the Big 8..Steve York on WCFL was our manager and booking agent for our band in Connecticut, he was working on WWCO in Waterbury Connecticut as Jeff Stevens in 1968..
My alarm clock-radio woke me to WLS in the late 1970's. Larry Lujack, Little Tommy Edwards and John Records Landecker were the voices I heard in my room. I was in high school the day of the blizzard and only had my drivers license for a few weeks; School let out early at 1pm and I managed to escape the building and out to my car. I drove home in the blowing snow; The drifts were just starting to build up in the streets and yards. The other high school students who remained behind spent the night sleeping on the foam mats in the gym.
Surreal to hear such great music connected to such great memories during a very DARK time in the city of Chicago following the very sad tragic events in the suburbs that past christmas season God Bless the late Det. Joe Kozenczak who would NOT let the the Rob Piest case go ..period! a REAL cop!
I remember listening to was in the 70s and early 80s remember John records landecor and the boggie Check boggie check oh ah oh ah i also remember listening to animal stories with Larry and little Tommy what fun times those were i grew up in gary Indiana near Chicago it's nice to hear the old wls😊😅
I grew up on this radio station! Listened from Gary IN, OUT side of Chicago I remember schools were closed and water pipes were frozen at our house thank god the heat was working.
27:15 "If you are 35 and the most exercise you get is bending the elbow once in a while, you shouldn't be out shoveling snow." Hey, I needed a trigger warning for that!
Always a pleasure to hear him. That’s when radio was worth listening to. Really sad that so many great jocks and musical artists have now passed. We really did live in the golden age of radio back then.
50,000 watt blowtorch WLS covered half the country at night spent many nights listening to it down south. sadly the AM band is a shell of it's former glory. So many stations have shut down or reduced to flea power. In my area the static has gotten so bad that I have trouble getting local radio stations just a few miles away.
I have an event memory according to my Psychology professor/mentor.mso I remember everything around events!! History n I remember this very well growing up in Lombard IL.. listening to him on my lil round line green transistor radio..n the day before my birthday this blizzard hit!😂
To us, he was just "Uncle Larry". Spent time with him and Jude at their house in Santa Fe and never knew how famous he was. That says volumes about his character.
In radio 50 years…never heard it called _kissing_ the post. _Hitting_ the post is what we called it on the West Coast. I like calling it “kissing” better. 👍🏼🎙️
Chicago radio once ruled the airwaves. WLS was always on in our house and car, up until about this point in time. The shock jocks started. WLUP had Steve Dahl & Garry Meyer, Jonathan Brandmeier, Kevin Matthews. Kev was my favorite because he made me laugh so hard I would crash my car! Does anyone have a copy of, or even remember his interview with the gaggers? Damn that was the funniest thing I ever heard, period.
I was a llittle young in 78 to say I remember litening from Morris IL. But I do remember years later tuning into Animal Stories before heading to school.
Since it's 109 degrees here today, the weather reports on here remind me that there are some places in the U.S. where absolute frigid, unbearable conditions exist.......
Born & raised in East Central Illinois (Yes. Downstate Illinois) and grew up listening to the “blow torch”. Perhaps the only worthwhile thing to come out of Chicago.
As long as this is on RUclips Larry will remain “ on the air”. God bless you Larry. RIP. You will never be forgotten. ❤

This must be during the Blizzard Of 78. I was born in February of 1978. Great music from the 70s.
god lord a puppy son
It thought it was in January of 1979.
Larry says Jan 27th Don’t know what year.
The title of the aircheck says January 27th 1978
Brings back good memories of my youth. Listened to WLS from 1963 on….🤔

You're very welcome!
Every school was closed due to snow. That means this is my second time listening to the broadcast.
Always a pleasure to hear him. That’s when radio was worth listening to. Really sad that so many great jocks and musical artists have now passed. We really did live in the golden age of radio back then.
Every generation thinks that _they_ lived in a Golden Age. 🤣😂
Love love loved listening to WLS back in the day. Used to put my old AM radio under my pillow when I went to sleep here in Minneapolis.
much love radio joe thanks for this ☮️
You're very welcome!
Happy birthday in heaven funny Guy today
This was on my birthday and I turned 22 and in my last year at Illinois State and lived in Lansing, IL not far from Chicago. Loved Larry Lujack!!! RiP
OK...now I GOTTA see the episode of Phil Donahue with Larry Lujack! LOL!

Awesome - These guys were masters at talking right up to the song's first lyric. called it "kissing the post"
In radio 50 years…never heard it called _kissing_ the post. _Hitting_ the post is what we called it on the West Coast. I like calling it “kissing” better. 👍🏼🎙️

The music is soooo good
Amazing how I can remember lyrics to songs I haven’t heard in 30 years yet I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday…🤨
Yikes, it was frigid that morning (5 degrees above zero with 20-30 mph wind).
Typical Chicago winter day
I was a llittle young in 78 to say I remember litening from Morris IL. But I do remember years later tuning into Animal Stories before heading to school.
