    As a software guy (not auto industry) I can easily imagine that the added complication on how to balance the electric and gas motors in these situations might have not been debugged. I'd be interested to know if there was a software upgrade after your Tucson Hybrid review that addressed the problems you found. Kudos for responding to reader comments and following up with a 2nd review.

      I think their AWD designed for snow/rain mostly, not for offroad. And if you're going to do a lot of trails like that - you definitely need reconsider your choice. I am also waiting for phev and I think it'll do fine, since I need AWD only for bad weather conditions and hills

      The AWD system connects to the rear with a clutch pack. It’s adjacent to the rear diff, but packaged close to it. I don’t say the diff is a clutch, but the AWD connection back there is for transferring power F to R. The rear is an open diff.

      They're not a problem for many soft roaders. RAV4, Subaru Crosstrek (non-hybrid) and Bronco Sport are three crossovers that do fine on it.

    • @jpnorth3557
      @jpnorth3557 3 года назад

      @@drivingsports Thanks for the video. You gave this HTRAC system a C grade. What grade would you give the CRV Hybrid you tested awhile back as well as the regular CRV system that you mentioned was less impressive. I’m not sure I’ve heard you give grades before, which is helpful, but just curious how you would compare the different systems through that lens.

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  3 года назад +1

      @@jpnorth3557 I want to be cautious about revisiting old reviews “officially” but I’d say the CRV non-hybrid is in the “needs improvement” category, C- or a D. Subaru Forester would probably rank as a “B” with an A score yet to be achieved by a crossover.

    • @jpnorth3557
      @jpnorth3557 3 года назад

      @@drivingsports In terms of hybrid AWD systems overall, it seems like the Tucson and CRV would be more sure-footed on road than the Toyota e-AWD, but the Toyotas seem to do OK or even better if you’re willing to wait for them to figure out whatever off-road situation they’re encountering. It’s important to note that the RAV4 hybrid’s Trail mode is not intended for continuous on-road use so would be less helpful in ongoing snowy conditions for example. It’s only for limited off road use as featured in these reviews. That’s a bit of a dealbreaker for me. No perfect hybrid AWD system that I see.

I've seen pretty much every review I could find and I haven't seen any other hybrid tucson do what yours was doing in similar situations. Here is a video of the Tucson hybrid going up against several other crossovers in offroad testing on the same course in the same day. The Tucson actually out-performed the others. It's in spanish, but you can clearly see the other vehicles having issues getting up the hills that the Tucson hybrid is climbing with little to no drama

That works, but still not as good as a LSD, limited slip, locking differential, or whatever you want to call it.

Hyundai make fantastic cars now, Subaru make boring city cars no matter what marketing drivel they dream up.
    Highest ground clearance and the fastest acting traction system in class doesn't mean jack when the car refuses to move under full throttle because it has a CVT.

    I got a great solution. How about stop buying these under-engineered Hyundai-Kia products, complete waste of money. Why not just buy something that’s already proven from Japan, America, European stuff. The only people buying these cars are looking for value, bang for your buck stretch their dollar. Great video though, and honesty.

    Just some Info to prove your point: we thought we were turning onto a dirt road in my girl's 2023 Tucson. It ended up being super thick mud. We had no intention of off roading. Lucky she has the HTRAC version or we would've gotten stuck.

    Already bought the 22 Tucson SEL ICE/Non-EV in also Intense Blue and only FWD. If I could go back, I'd got the hybrid AWD due to more combined power, AWD, low end Turbo torque due to the 1.6T portion, and increased MPG. Besides that, I'm getting between 30-42MPG daily due to taking back roads with very little traffic and about 3-4 stops.

    I want the Hybrid for the savings in fuel and environmental impact. i want to understand the drive system better, it may be the set up that makes the difference. I really like the warrantee on this car. what I would like to know is the availability of parts for it, when it needs repairs. would I be stuck going to Hyundai or would there probably be knock offs. I currently drive a jeep liberty and I rarely get stuck for more then a few, it always get me out. TY for the review.

    Upvote so Hyundai fixes this stuff in their software. A somewhat offroad capable Tucson Hybrid makes for a ridiculously fuel efficient trail vehicle (with a little lift and the right tires) and it's a waste to not have it perform as well as possible.

      Well said! This is why manufacturers love selling SUVs with their higher markup. Also so many bells and whistles going into even base models these days (safety tech, infotainment, etc). These have to be paid for by the consumer. I personally like less tech on my car, lower price and higher reliability.

    • @timflint25

      @@James-il3tq Same! I like simple, tried and true products. As much as a new vehicle might be more refined and "better", it really pains me that some things have gone so far forward technologically that they've actually gone backwards in their usability. It makes me want to drive nothing but older vehicles, despite their lack of modern crash structures.
