It’s not the recruiter’s fault, but the recruiting system itself is flawed. Many are pursuing, or already have STEM degrees, that want to work in a certain field for the military and gain experience on the way. I understand your argument about “entitled people,” but they are more inclined to be passionate about their job and out-preform an enlisted who lacks interest in their assigned field. If high demand is the issue, we should go off an apply, screen, and wait basis to ensure the best and most qualified people end up in their respective roles. Now, it’s more of a “right time and place” system that’s based more on luck and availability than qualification or skill. That’s why we have Computer Science graduates working as Weather Officers instead of Space Operations Officers. This fact alone, deters and discourages many *overqualified* candidates from joining, who would otherwise make a great addition to the force. They’d take the pay cut and serve their country if it meant they could work in their field of choice, but they can’t, instead, they opt for professional careers in the private sector. There’s a simple solution to this problem, and its implementation would result in a far more efficient military.

That’s literally the boat I’m in right now. It seems the army may let me take the ASVAB and other required test multiple times to get the score I need for my one job right after I graduate with a degree in cybersecurity. Unless my recruiter lied to me either way I don’t have to sign the dotted line.

Yep. I have a biology degree but I’m not a citizen and I can’t join as an officer. So I’m trying to get some jobs related to my field like medical laboratory, histologist but they are trying to make put maintenance specialist, fuel specialist in my job list… I’ll take the ASVAB soon and see how it goes, in my practice test I already scored more than i needed to … I may join the Army and not the AF due to the jobs list.
