Troy is the best. I stumbled onto his tapes and books in around 1988 or maybe a little earlier. I loved his lessons and it's still awesome to see him teaching some 35 years later!!
This guy is a king .. learning with his book metal lead guitar, here in France. Awesome book. Thank you for your hard work and videos, those really help
The great Steve Vai once said somewhere, once you start to "listen" to what you play, everything gets better from there. And the corrections that need to be made are easier to make. And I'll agree 100% with our big bro, the great Troy Stetina here. Keep up these vids.
It is a really helpful video! Thank you. Unless the coach I am already paying attention to the motion, challenging my self with new materials that are a little bit hard to play and I m paying a lot of attention with the sound !
Glad to hear that! I’d say that if you are doing those things and still remain stuck, then you are not doing them well enough… not paying attention to the right nuances. That said, be aware that it also takes a lot of repetition to burn the skills into unconscious muscle memory. So that’s not being “stuck”, that’s just the required time input
I thought I would add this in about the coach aspect. If you ever read any message boards about Freddie Gruber and Neil Peart. You'll see some Rush fans going on about how he was Neil's teacher and yet they can't find footage of him playing and they want to denigrate his skills as a player.(see any RUclips clip with him) But yet they respect Neil and can't see that Neil got more out of him as a coach and as the second set of eyes on his skills. Of course Neil was the superior drummer. But to not understand that Neil got OTHER ideas and insights into his skills Freddie could provide as a mentor, teacher, or coach. They act like Neil got scammed. Thanks Troy!!
That's interesting to me. Superior coaching isn't necessarily the same thing as superior playing... although the two can and often do go together. Beause coaching is all about the eye/ear for it, while the playing is about applying the eye/ear stuff. So, yeah, a person needs a certain level of development as a player to get that eye/ear. But if I get rusty as a player, I can still coach just as effectively. That part never goes away!
Hi Troy, Thank you so much for the useful advices.i have learned many lessons from your videos. Please make a video about the improvisation in metal music.
Troy, I like all your videos! thank you for posting them. What is that song that's played at the beginning of this video as well as the song played at the very end of the video? are these songs of yours that will become available at some point?
Thanks for another insightful video Troy. I'm coming up on my first solid 6 months of practice out of your books (about 2-3 hours a day), was wondering if occasional lessons would be beneficial. One hour once or twice a month as opposed to weekly. Or would weekly lessons (30 minutes) be a better option. Haven't found any teachers near me yet that seem like a good fit but I am looking.
You're welcome! For the kind of lessons I do, I find an hour once a month generally works best. But I'll do whatever facilitates best progress. I'd say let's do one session and see how it goes and then plan how to move forward from there. Email me at troy @ troystetina .com and we can talk thru more details
I'm using a pair of dynaudio acoustics with a sub. The main thing IMO is that you learn the curve of your monitors relative to the "norm" in the real world, to make decent decisions. I also have a stereo system hooked up in the studio and A/B between monitors and stereo when mixing/mastering.
Thanks Troy, I must admit that my eyes often glaze over when i'm practicing. I do need to listen a bit more. You should do a video about practicing when you're tired and how it can be counter productive as well. I hardly ever see anybody covering this topic.
Interesting idea... I'll say this about tired, unfocused practice: It may function as the "cement" time that I was talking about in this video, but it's not going to be effective at learning anything new, breaking new ground IMO. Does that make sense?
Yes, given those two things you say (20 years and still not playing well), there is definitely some fundamentals that you are not hearing, and a coach that could guide you to how to approach and resolve them would be the best way to go. Just make sure that it's someone with a good breadth of knowledge and a good track record. Good luck and blessings on your efforts!
@@TroyStetinaMusic I don't listen closely to how I am playing. I don't have a coach. I don't take challenges. Wasted big time finding gear. But I know these are what hindered me as a player.
That T-shirt logo is fantastic!

Thanks for the comment Mr black! Ya know that may just be the first time Steve Vai and I agree on something...😲

Great video, Troy! On a completely different topic, what are your studio monitors of preference?
I'm using a pair of dynaudio acoustics with a sub. The main thing IMO is that you learn the curve of your monitors relative to the "norm" in the real world, to make decent decisions. I also have a stereo system hooked up in the studio and A/B between monitors and stereo when mixing/mastering.
I love the shirt!
hehe... that's the fifth mistake, and it's solution!
Hello brother how are you doing stay safe and sound
Doing great, just pumping out a lot of new material and prepping for SM2
Nice Shirt, Troy. Thanks for another tip to avoid a plateau on guitar.
You bet!
About mistake 1 . Learn to record yourself from day 1. This is very important.
For sure. That is the fastest way to listen 100%. And it will reveal just how much a player ISN’T listening as they play!
Thanks Troy, I must admit that my eyes often glaze over when i'm practicing. I do need to listen a bit more. You should do a video about practicing when you're tired and how it can be counter productive as well. I hardly ever see anybody covering this topic.

I think i need a coach....cause i have been learnt guitar for 20 yrs but cant play well.

Early on I didn't realize how terrible I was playing till I heard a recording of myself. I'm still bad but at least I'm not terrible now 🤪
That's progress!!! Keep at it and it will continue to improve over time
I thought the mistake is that logo on your right hand side LOL
Yes, that is perhaps a bigger mistake that would be wisest to avoid in the first place!!🤣
This guy's preaching the gospel of guitar. It's offensive but it's right.
Thanks! Can I ask, what part(s) did you consider offensive and why?

Oh I see... well, now you know! So now you can improve faster!! It's all good

Thanks! No, I'm remarried to a quite amazing woman😀. In fact, SHE bought me the shirt!!
