  • I looped the End of »Sunspire« from the Unreal Game Score four Times, plus the Showdown Intro and a CUSTOM OUTRO. (Edited with ModPlug Tracker)
    It occurs that People search RUclips for the Unreal Game Score, looking for this particular Track because it has an Ending as epic as Epic. Unfortunately, it is a long Track with Lots of calm Sounds that differs very much from the End of the Track, and it is that End that everyone wants to hear -- and then when it comes, it is over again, way to fast.
    »Sunspire (Hub3)« by Michiel van den Bos
    I do not own it, I did not make it, I just edited it,
    and I hope you enjoy it. :}

    The Sunspire marks the halfway point in the journey. You saw it in the distance earlier on: an incredibly tall and thin rock formation that reached into the sky and split the horizon in two. You never planned to visit this place, yet somehow it seemed inevitable that you would end up here. Na Pali itself seemed to be pushing you towards it.
    The complicated mechanisms you've encountered in the Nali's vast and opulent temples confirm their engineering prowess. While the Nali settlements you've come across so far seem worryingly small, what structures they do have are sturdily built, with strong foundations, multiple floors, chimneys, plumbing, and well-crafted wooden furniture. It's easy to imagine the Nali at some point had large towns, shipping ports, and possibly even cities. The Skaarj likely invaded a long time ago, and destroyed most of what the Nali built. Anything left has since been reclaimed by the aggressive wilderness of Na Pali. Only the most impressive structures, their religious temples, remain.
    Never before is that made more apparent than when you first enter the Sunspire. The interior is a sprawling series of rooms and hallways, layered on top of each other over multiple floors, and connected by one main elevator among a large series of smaller elevators and twisting passageways.
    It's easy to want to give up at this point. The daunting complexity of the spire, the swarms of enemies, the dark corridors covered in larvae and barnacles, this ugly slog feels like far too much to handle. But this place was beautiful once. The Nali used their engineering genius not to build weapons of war, but instead to build monuments to their gods. Monuments that shout upwards at the sky, to whoever may be listening: "We exist and for that we are grateful."
    Scattered throughout the spire you find human corpses. These people were a search party from the ISV-Kran. They entered the spire looking for a missing crew member named Kira Argmanov. The Skaarj kidnapped her and possibly brought her here. You find that each member made varying amounts of progress as you discover each of their corpses. You find the remains of one man named N. Onalopov. His last log entry professes his love for the woman they are searching for and his determination to find her.
    Wondering whether those feelings were unrequited or not, you stand near the main elevator of the spire and look up at the rest of the structure towering into the darkness above, it's roof beyond the point of visibility. These slain people surrounding you didn't give up, they were out to help someone else, one of their own that they cared about. You're a castaway and a convict on the run, trying only to survive and escape on your own. You've felt like a selfish, solitary wild animal ever since you woke up to find your cell block covered in blood and body parts. For a brief moment, in this defiled religious place, you feel something greater than animalistic survival pull at you. You feel like a human again: an alien race to this strange and dangerous planet. It's time to show this new world just how tenacious Earth's apex species can be.
    It's obvious now. All the complexity of the dark passageways, the elevators, the claustrophobic rooms, it all disappears under your determination and condenses down into one overriding plan: Climb.
    Following that simple directive, the labyrinth becomes manageable and you battle your way to the top of the tower, emerging from a doorway and into fresh air. You are greeted at the summit by the two setting suns and what appears to be a medium sized squad of Skaarj troopers. Already covered in the blood of those who would stop your ascent and filled with a new found vengeance against the invaders, you charge into combat. You dispatch your foes with an eruption of fire and gun smoke, sending their bullet ridden and flak-shredded bodies plummeting from the peak and into the lava below. You've climbed long enough to know that it's a long way down.
    You light the great torch and call the sky carriage. You climb inside and are taken up even higher than the spire's summit, beyond the clouds. After traveling through the sky for some time, the carriage stops and the door opens. You step outside and take a moment to process what you are seeing.
    The Nali do indeed have cities. And those cities can fly.

    Was replaying Unreal for the first time in a bit, coming back to Sunspire, I was hit with this track that reminded me how much of a banger this game's soundtrack is.
    This song always had this sense of otherworldly coziness. A strong sense of adventure, but the warm feeling of home still feels presence. It felt so rejuvenating, like I was revisiting an old friend and all the years of stress and struggle just melted away.

    I like to play games blind, so i did... knowing its gonna have some bullshit moments somwhere... it sure did!
    Stuck in sun spire way longer than id like to admit. Hidden switch in pitch black behind a pillar, in the religious looking room. Bullshit.
    BUT! THIS TUNE! spent 2 hours looking for that switch... had plenty of time to listen to this. was stuck in my head for days afterwards.

      Our fellow intergalactic gardeners were my favorite enemy in unreal.

    • @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460
      @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460 3 года назад +3

      @@a-sheepof-christ9027 Mine as well! The ones in the Mothership also taunt you if you get close - these guys sure like to taunt (which often becomes their downfall).
      Mercenaries had so much personality to them compared to other enemies. Various talk, gesture and idle animations, pushing buttons, chatting with fellow mercs - only Krall could compare in behaviour diversity. Some, instead of attacking you on sight, would just gesture you to buzz off or ignore you, like they had better things to do than chase after you. They only start getting really pissed after you've rampaged through their facility and killed some of their toughest (and perhaps higher-ranked?) comrades. It all points to them being more than just bloodthirsty alien conquerors.
      Another interesting bit of lore/characterisation: there's a log at Terraniux that suggests that mercs visited Noork's Elbow to get fertilizer, yet there's no indication that they killed it's inhabitants. In fact, the hut with dead nalis has a crucified one, and crucifixion is a skaarj&co thing. Perhaps mercenaries took fertilizer in exchange for protection? What if those nalis were executed for helping them? Mercenaries and skaarj did seem at odds with eachother.
      And they're definitely no slouches when it comes to combat. Some robust Terraniux individuals can kick Skaarj Berserker's ass, and then there's the power shield, which is plain haxx when combined with elite's ability to fire through it. I'm a shameless cheater, so I found this username and icon suitable.
      Fun fact: there are unused dancing animations for mercs in the game files that could be viewed through UnrealEd. I guess it's a valid reason for a party animal mercenaries headcanon lol. Among other unused animations there's somersault, a weird CHARGEUP thing (dunno what it's supposed to be) and tied to the wall position.
      Whoops, got carried away. Hope walls of text don't scare you!

    • @a-sheepof-christ9027
      @a-sheepof-christ9027 3 года назад

      @@mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460 The large text is not a problem as I would dwell on the map harobed/terraniux for extended periods back then. I remember reading the translator logs in terraniux, that implied the mercs had to regulate the viscosity of the biomatter they were using in order to grow their plants - which seemed vital to their entire society/infrastructure - or I would watch them as they tended to the plants directly (idle animations in the direction of said plants made it seem convincing to me).
      I did notice that the mercs (Unreal greys) would seem to have more complex behaviour than the other more aggresive NPCs. I would often summon the more stout and stronger versions and notice how they would beat their chest and point at me repeatedly - sometimes not even attacking.
      In general I do not think the mercs are benevolent towards the Nali - but I do see that they are certainly not connected to the Skaarj empire at large. I think their interest is short term harvesting while the Skaarj care more about colonizing worlds. I do however think both are there to exploit the resources.
      I remember vaguely from ingame experience that in the gold edition I had, some of the mercs actually performed a backwards flip after firing - similar to what the Skaarj can pull off - but it was all so long ago. :)

    • @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460
      @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460 3 года назад +1

      @@a-sheepof-christ9027 While reading the logs I didn't get the impression that they used waste to grow plants - rather, that it's a byproduct of agriculture that they either dispose of later or use for something else. But my game's translation has mistakes, so who knows...
      Mercenaries often play taunt animations when first noticing player, while other creatures lunge at you right away unless their relationship is set to something other than ATTITUDE_Hate. Another favorite course of action is to turn on the shield and mock your inability to kick their ass. So, while they aren't as violent as skaarj, they still seem to be smug jerks.
      When I wrote "exchange for protection", I meant pragmatism rather than benevolence. After all, nalis can't provide mercs with fertilizer if they're dead (unless that theory I saw on TVTropes is true and nalis ARE the fertilizer, but that's unlikely seeing as the bodies in Noork's Elbow have been there for some time), and besides, playing nice would make the natives more cooperative.
      As for resource exploitation, I suspect that mercenaries didn't come to Na Pali on their own volition. Ships crash on that planet all the time, and the look of Terraniux suggests that it's a crashed spaceship repurposed into facility. Why else would they build all that on top of a mountain? Doesn't seem very rational to me.
      Never personally saw mercs somersaulting, and I've spent a lot of time observing them while playing Unreal. Though I think I saw one doing something like that after killing the player in another user's video, but I think it was deleted.

    • @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460
      @mercenaryelitewithshieldon6460 3 года назад +1

      @@a-sheepof-christ9027 Oh, by the way, I just opened Unreal and summoned an unarmed bot for the mercs to kill. Guess what? One of them did that flip in air animation after killing him. So it isn't unused, just not commonly encountered (unless you die a lot on that level). It seems to be some sort of victory taunt.

      Absolutely right! The part where the melody slowly starts rising, then shortly drops, just to start rising again, it perfectly conveys this particular level's theme of skyward ascension, the occasional fall-back before finding anoher elevator leading up, and eventually reaching the gondola that ascends to the Sky Town. To me it sounds like the climax of the game, because the melody revolves so much about the theme of leading up to a climax.

A lot of the soundtrack in retrospect sounds kinda depressing actually. I dunno why, but the action tracks are pretty intense and add to the situation really well too, like the action part of the beta track Alien Esque. The upbeat section feels like it should be one-off, when we ascend onto the sky town or some comparable event. It is epic. Unexpectedly, it looped over and over again while I explored the Sunspire and looked for new doors.
    @ Animus Silica, actually I believe that Winamp was the most accessible, mainstream player that could access all subsongs - with the setting "Continue Play After Loop" - well before foobar existed. Xmplay was around, but it feels a little awkward for general use. I received an encode of "Dig" from a gaming magazine, with the three songs tacked onto one another, and later listened to them in that arrangement in Winamp, and grew used to it (the songs are actually too dissimilar and do not flow well).
    That music was my first experience with Unreal. For a couple years I played the game without sound at an educational facility, where they didn't have speakers.

    Richtig: Die zwei Haupt-Musiker für Unreal waren Michiel van den Bos und Alexander Brandon, und beide haben auch die Musik für Deus Ex geschrieben und umgesetzt.
    Gut erkannt, ich habe mir das Selbe anders herum gedacht, als ich Deus Ex spielte. ;}

      I have a request to make: The biggest issue I have with the original track is the way it abruptly ends while I do enjoy the slow and long buildup to the ending. I'd like to, if you have no problem with it, make and upload a video of the original track edited to include your custom outro, while obviously giving you credit for it.

      @@simonemartini4754 Oh, I only saw your Comment just now -- it seems that RUclips never notified me about it for some Reason. I can't find any Unreal-Content on your Channel, so I guess you never went through with uploading the Track (perhaps because I didn't respond?). I see that you haven't uploaded any new Videos in two Years (roughly since you made this Comment), but if you ever want to go through with what you had in Mind, sure you can dot that, I'd be totally fine with it. :)

    Did you create the outro? This is perfect

      Thank you. Yes, I created the Outro by rearranging the Song's Elements in Open ModPlug Tracker. : )

    It's too bad we never got an actual sequel. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Awakening, but it just didn't capture anything remotely close to the depth and beauty of the first game. Cool ideas, but not as epic. We got 4.5 Tournaments, 2 Championships and 2 Unreals. It was a good run, but I'll always want more.

    wow, i never heard this one before. I would be interested to use this specific music in small single player campaign im making for UT?

    • @ChristopherSummer89
      @ChristopherSummer89  7 лет назад +1

      That sure would spark some Nostalgia in some of the older Unreal-/UT-Fans. You can find the original Track in the Game Files of the original Unreal, but if you really want this specific Remix of mine, I hope this will work: drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx2y0ltoeC2aaHVESHdaSmpVVGM

      No yeah sorry, i was in the middle of something when i wrote the coment, i ment to ask if you would be ok with me using your specific remix. I am still in the concept process, and was shuffling through some old tracks to get that old atmosphere the game had (very imersive and very emotional), I might change many things in the small single player campaign but i am sure this will be the main theme.

      Thank you so much for sending me a quality file (It worked). In the next year i might yet not need help, but if it will be needed would you like to participate in some of the music editing for the project? we can talk through emails if you want :)

      While I can hardly tell you what I would or would not like to do in the next Year or after, you'll probably still be able to reach me via the E-Mail in my Channel-Info, and if you'll ever write me a Mail in the Future, we will see. :)
