One of my favorite things about Linebeck actually comes from the Phantom Hourglass manga. Linebeck used to be a part of the ghost ship crew (pre-ghosting of course) and when the Cubus sisters cursed the crew he ran off, leaving everyone else to "die". Which in the manga is a big part of why he is, the way he is.

Another thing in the manga that is pretty great is that instead of wishing his boat back to snuff, it's left kind of ambiguous as to what he actually wished for, with the only clue being his boat back in the real world.

I think Tatl is mad underrated as a character. She radiates tsundere big sister vibes like you wouldn't believe. Like she'll say "I can't believe you don't know about the Stalfos!" And then tell you info to help beat it. Plus she's more than a talking reticle like Navi: she voices her own opinions during events in the game, notably the Kafei questline. Not to mention her relationship with Skull Kid, complicated as it becomes thanks to Majora's Mask, and her lil brother Tael

Mostly agree with all of this, except the info part. In my experience, she’d just yell at me for not already knowing what I’m fighting, and more or less end it there. For some she’s helpful, for others she blows the job off almost as bad as Navi does with Dark Link.

My favorite character in Zelda History will always be Teba. Teba does have the snarky attitude that Revali does, but he has something that Revali doesn't. He respects Link for helping him out, when Revali just shrugs him off.
Also, his play-style in Age of Calamity easily beats Revali. Teba is a grounded version of Revali, and also, he's a boss killer.

gonna be the first guy in history to defend revali here, but he doesn't just shrug link off, from reading his journal it's shown he's so smug of himself because he's worked hard for the respect of his people, but then link shows up, never does anything, refuses to talk to him, and yet is given the same rank as champion, while tasked with the very important job of protecting the princess. he's still a smug jerk, but in my opinion he's at least smug for a reason.
ironically, despite me going on this defence of revali, i actually still prefer teba.

    • @bluestreaker9242
      @bluestreaker9242 Год назад +2

@@comfyghost I like that angle and makes Revali's snark completely understandable. One might consider it obnoxious, to that I'd say "Imagine training your whole life to be good at something, and then Sir Pretty Boy of Whogivesafawkistan who did absolutely nothing just wins over everyone's respect." Yeah, Link is SUPPOSED to be the hero, always has been, but stop and think about it from the angle of someone who's NEVER heard of Link before; his reaction to Link's arrival is akin to that of the Toads from The Super Mario Bros. Movie when Mario first sets off with the Princess: he hasn't DONE anything yet to EARN their respect. Revali is under no obligation to respect Link; Revali has only ever HEARD of Link's greatness, but never actually saw it. Revali strikes me as someone who abides by the "Show don't tell" mantra; and when Link frees him from Windblight Ganon, I got the feeling he had a newfound begrudging respect for Link. I akin their relationship to that of Falco's & Fox's...sorta.

Ravio, as a refection of Link, is cowardice. He runs awayand lets you to the questing because he can't/
Yuga, as Ganon's reflection, is weakness. He relies on tricks instead of strength, and is easily overtaken by Ganon after merging.

I don't agree on something: REVALI NOT BEING IN THE LIST.
I know he can come as a jerk when we first know him, but that's because we are shallow with videogame characters and we don't see when a character is writen with more depth that meets the eye. When you really get to know Revali, think on the details on each of his dialogues and his scenes, you get to see that his attitude as a jerk is actually a mask. He's a jerk because he feels himself less than the other champions, his jerkness is just jealousy and frustration with himself. He's insecure of his own abilities that he trained so hard to get and the place he has amongs the rito while the rest of the champions were basically born with their abilities and a place in the high society in their respective race. Just think, Urbosa is the gerudo chief and we know that title is inherited, Mipha is the zora princess, Daruk is the decendant of a line of goron heroes, Zelda is self explanatory, Link was born in a family of royal guards, but nothing is said about Revali's family or ancestory, so we can assume all of Revali's archivements were gain by himself alone, he wasn't the decendant of noticeable rito or royalty, he made himself the best of his race by shedding sweat, blood and tears.

    • @LightbladeRiulo

He’s a jerk because he’s upset that he’s not the main character, stays a jerk for 95 percent of appearance, and at best gives a backhanded compliment to Link before the plot demands that he screws off. No AoC doesn’t make this better as even Teba isn’t amused at who Revali actually was. He’s a self centered jerk who needed to get his ass kicked and did. The other champions weren’t dicks to Link. Why is he supposed to be given the exception?

    • @sofaris576

    10. Eh not bad but it could be better...
    9. Yeah he's a friend I would want to have. Also love his development in Tears of the Kingdom but I won't say anything more.
    8. Talk about a 180. I hated him when the game began but he was an interesting character at the end.
    7. Yeah I didn't see the twist coming despite looking up the final battle and it's deep.
    6. Personally I prefer Spirit Tracks' portrayel better but Tetra is second and BOTW Zelda is tragic once you unlock all the dragon tears from TOTW. Again... no spoilers!
    5. Both intimidating and crazy, first memorable villain besides Ganon ahoy!
    4. Another great character arc here. That seems to be a theme here...
    3. This guy succeeded and the end was ruined by his master. See the problem here?

10:30 Tetra's Decendant (Spirit Tracks Zelda) would like a word with you.
Jokes aside. I get some people are thrown off by the touch controls, but Spirit Tracks Zelda, and the ST characters in general are just among my favourites in the entire franchise. The gameplay was flawed in many areas, but the general adventure and the characters in ST are way underrated! Especially Zelda and Byrne/Delok.
And talking about Byrne - maybe my opinion will change after I finish my ST replay, but HE would be my Nr. 1 pick for this list. In the game, he actually has a full scale back story and redemption art. Accompanied with his own theme that literally evolves with him! He starts off as a random villain that aids the supposedly main antagonist, trying to revive the big bad demon lordy. As we encounter him again and again, we learn that he has a specific grudge against Ms. Old Wise Lady Guide Anjean. Eventually, we learn that he used to be her disciple, but eventually turned bad. Even further on, we learn that he is a spirit, just like her, that looked up to her, but she failed to make him feel recognized. She never saw his potential, always only pushed him back, and eventually he didn't want to take it anymore. Making him join the villain back guy that smeared honey upon his mouth. And then again, later, as we beat him and capture him, after having him see first hand that his new mentor sidelines him faster than a kid finding a new toy, he turns around and helps the good guys. NOT. At least not right away. He stays in the train, as a fugitive, and shows you his disdain in a few talks between story beats. But more and more, he keeps opening up, as he gets drawn into the conversations and gets confronted with his mistakes. He's still mad at his granny, but he eventually grows respect for Link and Zelda, up to the point where they kinda start encouraging each other in a somewhat "tsundere" way.
Up to the finale, where he finally decides to throw away his pride and literally take a hit for Zelda, who he grew to respect. To take a hit from the Master he once tried to resurrect. And on EVERY SINGLE ENCOUNTER FROM HIM, his signature theme gets faster. As the stakes get higher with each time we encounter him, the speed of his theme keeps raking up. Until that final moment, where he finally decides to take one for the team, and his theme goes very tense and epic - until he pops like a balloon and dies. Well, at least his body, supposedly his spirit lives one, but still.
That moment always gave me chills. Byrne is an amazing character that deserves SOME recognition.

Okay no surprise that Mipha was #1.
So as far as my fav side chars in Zelda, I am just once again going to list chars from the games I completed.
    1. OOT- Darunia- he's a hoot and his dance scene is one of the funniest Zelda moments for me.
    2. WW- Medli- She's just so plucky and fun, Quill comes in a close second though.
    3. TP- Midna- Yeah I love her for the same reasons Josh pointed out. Definitely best companion.
    4. LBW- Ravio- I actually enjoyed him more because of the twist involving him. Even then, the fact that you have access to all of the weapons thanks to him. Plus it's because of Ravio's bracelet that saves the day in the first place. Yeah I agree Hilda is underrated, but so is Ravio.
    5. BoTW- Zelda- Yeah best Zelda for me too (and BoTW has my fav version of Link also). She reminds me of myself in many ways too so I found her very relatable here.

  • @frogfrogfrogfrog6323

The lack of Ravio is a crime, while he may seem goofy for a lot of the game reading his dialogue again really shows a lot about how he is thinking. He may not have courage but he uses enough smarts to make up for it and he was dealt a bad hand but made the most of it. Plus reading his diary shows how far he is willing to go to save Hilda, Lorule and Hyrule too, a land he knew little about. Explain that and he and his bird probably just push their magic to it's limits with the help of the rupees he got (remember rupees are magic stones that power up fairies and also currency), it was probably another one way travel scenario. He was able to get some power from Yuga's scepter to travel to Hyrule but not enough to travel back and now he and his bird used the rupees they have gotten to travel back one last time, how they knew the time frame is anyones guess but I imagine Ravio's bird was following Link in secret and when Link is busy solo storming the castle, Ravio put his travel plan into motion and finished it in the nick of time

While I think Breath of the Wild has one of the most solid casts of characters in the series, one of my absolute favourites is honestly Kass. Even though he really doesn't do too much or have a big impact on the narrative outside of the DLC, he just has such a comforting presence about him that I can't help but like. One of the most memorable moments I had playing BotW for the first time was treking through Faron during the endless thunderstorm and suddenly hearing the very faint sound of an accordion playing. I would get excited every time I was roaming around in the wild and suddenly started to hear his song play because it meant that, even in the harsh and unforgiving landscapes of post-Calamity Hyrule, there was still a friend nearby.
I really do hope he comes back in TotK if they decide to make any DLC for it. Penn is cool and all, but he can't truly replace Best Bird.

Once you’re finally face to face with him, it’s clear that he’s purely a beast: not a conniving villain, a true monster in every sense of the word. Complete with him dying the same way as every other boss in the game. I find that interesting, you know?
That said, all the more reason for your “not Bellum” riff. He’d never make it on a list like this, because even the stuff I like about him is why he’s NOT a character.

1: my personal headcanon for Wild Link had feelings for both princess and was going to choose Mipha but then she died and he spent 100 years in a coma so all he has left now is Zelda but he's haunted by that loss which is why he's kept his distance from Zelda since the end of BotW despite his feelings for her as he's woried about losing her too and doing something a knight shouldnt do fall in love with his leige which is why he seemingly gave his house to her and has been wandering hyrule helping put Zelda's reconstruction plans into action and then Ganondorf wakes up and he seemingly loses her too and wories it might be too late now until the finale where Rauru and Sonia give him a second chance with her and after everything he's been though he doesnt let Zelda go this time and i like to think Mipha is watching over them happily somewhere.

I’m also sour about Mipha being killed off because like Josh I’m soft-hearted to characters who are caring and loving and in this case it’s just upsetting for me to see a great character die.

I like to think Breath of the Wild Zelda's backstory is all too similar to Link for his comfort. It's part of why I'm divided between Link/Mipha and Link/Zelda.
On one hand, Mipha is one of the best characters and has always been there for Link.
On the other hand... Shared trauma is definitely some powerful ship fuel!
Link first picked up a sword to save people from a Lynel. Given his natural talent for swordsmanship, I doubt Link had a choice about becoming a knight, made even worse when he first took up the Master Sword.
First, he was Link, then he was a particularly skilled knight of Hyrule, and then, as wielder of the Master Sword, he became a living weapon, minus the "living" part in the eyes of those around him, apart from Mipha, Daruk, and Urbosa.
I think that's also why he doesn't talk much. Why would a weapon talk?
Anyway, he looks at Zelda and sees another living weapon like himself.
Zelda's father became obsessed with her Sealing Power, treating her more as a developing weapon than a person. She was Zelda, then she was Princess of Hyrule, and now she is the yet-to-be-activated Sealing Power.
While their time together Pre-Calamity definitely wasn't the greatest, Zelda seeing Link as a reminder of her failings, and Link seeing her as a constantly active trauma button, they ultimately grew to better understand and respect each other.
And if that isn't ship fuel I don't know what is.

Mipha is just absolutely precious! Few have suffered as much as her and took it so well. Take Mithra from Asuras Wrath for example. Entire millennia of endless pain for the sake of fuelling the seven deities all while she was waiting for her papabear of a papa to come to the rescue. Or Cynder who was forced to endure the first twelve years of her life (to the day no less) as a puppet with no will of her own and witnessed herself wiping her own species to near extinction (possibly including her own family), and having to bear that guilt for the rest of her life. And yet this queen seeks to find her true self and make up for it all regardless of whether it was her fault or not. Out of all the love interests in the Spyro franchise, she deserves the purple boi the most. Just like Mipha deserves Link.

For villains, I have to give some credit to the Oracle games.
Onox is the least interesting one but it does fit with how he represents the "power" game, being incredibly strong and durable to the point of being condescending to Link. He walked so TotK Ganondorf could run.
Veran is the more personal of the villains, as her designated job is to cause as much pain as possible to create the flame of pain. She possessed Nayru and emotionally manipulated Queen Ambi by appealing to the queens former lover. After that, her plan is quite simple: have the citizens work during the day on paper then extend the length of daytime to the point of horribly overworking the citizens, causing the tower to become associated with the bad work conditions. In the meantime, she starts a hunt for mysterious seeds to remove the one thing that can undo her possession. After losing for the first time, she swaps to possessing the queen directly, leaving her more vulnerable in combat but with greater authority to hasten the tower's development. Both ended up completing their plans by the time they fell.
Koume and Kotake were much more active during this game as they're trying to revive Ganon. After Onox and Veran completed their tasks, the final step of their plan was to sacrifice Zelda. Even when they failed to stop Link, they offered themselves in an incomplete ritual as their last ditch effort.

I honestly adore Zant and he's genuinely my favorite Zelda villain. I love how he starts as an all powerful force who pretty much has everything he wants and believes he can not be defeated, evident by how he hardly focuses on Link and even just bats him to the side when they first meet face-to-face. He doesn't regard you as a threat since he has a God on his side.
Only for it to come crashing down as you get closer and closer to him and invade his Kingdom, and rather than surrender and accept his defeat he just goes insane and tries to finish you off himself despite clearly having no experience in fighting. He doesn't have a unique style of his own, or at least one that can match you. He steals the arenas of other bosses and for the most part just tries to overwhelm you with magic but when that doesn't work he decides to duel you "properly."
Buuuut since he's a spoiled brat with no proper training he can only really wildly flail his blades around and hope that he hits you.
And once you beat him he falls back completely on Ganondorf, with full faith that his God will kill you and revive him.
Only for Ganondorf to fall to you as well, and when the Demon King is holding on to the last bit of life contained by Zant, the Usurper King sees his God that failed him as well and ends both of their lives for good.
I just honestly love his descent into madness and his delusional nature, I need to finish reading the manga cuz I am really excited to see what they did with him there!

What makes Groose's redemption even better is that he was honoured for his heroics through the establishment of Grooseland. That's saying a lot for someone who used to be a bully who, despite his cowardice, stood up to Ghirahim and actively protected someone else, when he could've easily turned heel and never looked back.
I'd add the Seven Sages of Time onto this list as well. Nabooru was a noble warrior who stood by her people but was also loyal to Princess Zelda, for she understood that Ganon's reign would've doomed all of them. Princess Ruto, for as obnoxious as she was, also had a lot of comical moments where her sass brought me a couple of laughs. Though rescuing her from Jabu-Jabu felt like a chore. Darunia is easily a top-tier companion. He actively set foot into The Fire Temple and risked his life for his people. There's nothing more heroic than that in my opinion. Saria, for as small as she was, also understood her responsibilities and was the first person to show true kindness towards Link.
Then, there's Impa. A loyal companion to the Princess and to Link, who was once a sheikah warrior that worked under her father, the King of Hyrule. Rauru is somewhat forgettable but he was important in the long-run and remained a loyal member of the sages, understanding the sacrifice he must face in order to keep the Kingdom of Hyrule safe. Finally, there's Zelda, like all of his incarnations, who actively sought to reclaim Link's childhood back once Ganon was defeated. Ocarina of Time might be overrated. But you can't deny how great the cast is in it. Plus, Malon is a fantastic side-character who began Link's relationship with Epona, a horse that would become his noble steed throughout most of his adventures.

    • @SuperGoker64
      @SuperGoker64 Год назад

Me, personally? I maintain that Ilia, of all characters, is my least favorite in the series.
With how Twilight Princess was building her up in the intro, it seemed like she was going to be a big player in the game. But no, they decided to keep her as a generic love interest. With amnesia, no less. Joy. It also doesn't help that she's involved in an escort mission. The only things she ends up contributing to the story are to give Link a reason to press on, to guide him to Impaz, and to save Ralis' life... and her amnesia hardly hindered them.
But the coup de grace is when it comes to _finally_ healing her mind and curing her of amnesia (which, by the way, is actually optional). When/if you return her charm, she decided to gift it to you as the Horse Call... which would have been fine if not for the fact that we're so far into the game at this point that you have just about every warp active. And what do many of those warps have right next to them? Horse grass, which does _literally the same thing as the Horse Call._
