    I can’t wait for TES 6 to have a fully-simulated constellation skybox.
Edit: It’s been a year, but I genuinely do believe it would be a great idea. It’s not even that difficult. Just have a separate layer of the skybox with the constellations that moves as the in-game clock does.

Doing this video has made me appreciate the process Bethesda developers have gone through to make Tamriel's world building that much more real.
    My personal favorite star signs:
    1. Tower
    2. Steed (love that the Dwarven "steed" is a Scarab too)
    3. Serpent. Making this video has made me fall in love with it in all its glory. Can you believe it's the only one NOT to exist in the night skybox? It also has no attached month. Yet you can technically be born under it. Bad. Ass. That's so metal. What does it mean?
By Constellation alone my favorite would be the Lord. It's so intricate but also looks like a happy face at the bottom of his robes.
    What are your favorites?

    • @minerturtle45
      @minerturtle45 3 года назад +34

I know this is a year old comment but I just thought of something having to do with being born under the Serpent. Maybe, since even after a year in Skyrim the constellations are still slightly offset, your proposed leap year is actually a thing, and when you're born on that extra day/one of them if there's multiple, THAT'S how you can be born under the Serpent. Rogue days for a rogue star sign.

The fact that some constellation are obscure is totally real to life. Tons of them just aren't clear at all. I still find that relatable.

In Eldersrolls online, you actually meet the Warrior, Mage, theif, and serpent constellations. Its also hinted at that the constellations were once people. The early race of nedes used some sort of magic using nirncrux to ascend into the sky and become the celestials.
I still find it baffling how the theory isnt covered more by lore masters. Like the nedes using nirncrux to become "gods" is literally on par with the Tribunal striking the heart of Lorkhan. It also makes you wonder what history nirncrux has to make it such a powerful substance.

As much as many of us like to talk smack on Todd and Bethesda, you gotta admit they really put a truly gargantuan amount of thought and detail into so many details both microscopic and obvious. Its truly amazing that they weaved such consistent detail not only with lore but also within the games' mechanics and lore respectiveness. Props to the devs and you too Pat. So, SO SO many details go right over many of our heads, until we find videos like these that show us all those things we often just assume to be randomly thrown in details, or unrelated things as fillers, when in reality (ingame reality that is) it all actually is backed by the series' lore. Absolutely incredible, honestly. This makes me want to remove the (I think static) milky way galaxy night sky mod I have and use vanilla/modded vanilla just to be able to see the original skybox and constellations.

This is the coolest shit. The #1 reason I spend so much time in the ES games is because they feel like real places, I just soak it in. There are games with better combat, better stories, told in more interesting and engaging ways, but no one comes close to the atmosphere of the ES games. I wish they had quests or just things to do that allowed us to prove our knowledge of the world in this way, maybe a quest that could only be completed when a certain constellation is at a certain point in the sky.
More than anything, in a similar vein, I desperately hope that the next ES game has seasons.

I have to say constellations must be the most underwhelming thing about the sky that I have learned what it actually is.
I thought the stars were going to make actual images in the sky (even wondered how it was even possible).
No one really ever explained constellations to me. I'd look at the sky and just see random clusters of stars.
Perhaps this year or the last one, I have finally stumbled upon a picture of a constellation online and I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
It is just some stars that happen to be close enough for you to connect the dots if you use your imagination really hard!

That sounds like an awesome RP... what a creative idea for a character! AFAIK the ESO skybox is a copy of Earth's Southern Hemisphere. From a Lore standpoint though, in all games, my guess is that it's simply the gods having a bit of fun in the creation of Mundus. Not exciting, but I'd give it support by the fact that things are geocentric for Nirn's celestial environment... there simply are no galaxies. There are just planes. However, I'm always open to collaboration on deeper research on the subject if counterarguments present itself, especially in game mechanics. Thank you for your comment. I'd love to one day return to the night sky (after finishing my short list of video ideas) to research Masser & Secunda a little more... so it might be cool to revisit some night sky things I might have glanced over!

Come to think of it, seeing as the stars are actually holes in Aetherius leading to Mundus, they don't necessarily move, it's Nirn's rotation, much like real life, that gives off that impression. Hence, the constallations make for a realiable reference to base the calendar off of.

Seriously though, I have an interest in astrology (yes, not not astronomy even though it's also really cool!) so I really enjoy it when fictional setting include a whole system of cosmology that includes the stars shaping little characteristics of the people below them. Just a bit of fun. :)
Thanks for the video, it was really cool. And I always wondered if the skybox included the constellations. I also imagined I saw them, good to know they were there! :D

Extra: I *ALWAYS* pick the Shadow in my first playthroughs. It's the coolest. But the Lover, Atronach, Apprentice, and Lord are cool too. And interesting to note they set them up as 3 charges to 1 guardian. In astrology every sun sign has three aspects to it as well e.g. Pisces has Cygnus, Pegasus, and a dolphin I can't remember the name of....or not, but there's also 12 signs in total just like ES, and a contentious 13th sign Ophiuchus, which is a snake. :)

I'm a Gothic guy, and objectively Gothic games were much better in most regards to Morrowind(which came out after 1st Gothic), but i admire the detail in lore of TES. It partially repays for the gameplay boredom and frustration i had with test games. Tho i feel like Gothic could get to similar level if it got a chance, TES had a massive headstart in this regard. It just makes me think how it could be if both games could equal eachother and go on as direct competitors, aside of Gothic getting short end of the stick aside few places in Europe where it got a cult following.

I would agree. if Gothic got the same amount of love for the same length of time, it would be amazing to see where the series would be today.

It's sad that we don't see the serpent in the nightsky because its in my opinion the most interesting constellation lorewise but I understand why they wouldn't implement it as it doesn't work like real constellations
But I hope they change it in tes 6, which might even be the case because the game is most likely set in hammerfell, where the legend of the serpent constellation comes from

I mean, the cycles might be taking longer and longer because lore states time moves slower in the North. Sure, Morrowind had Solstheim but they also had limitations that wouldn't let them change how fast the skybox moves, and I have no explanation for Oblivion. But with Skyrim maybe they took the time slowing down thing literally, or it is literal because of the towers. Never know, the ambiguity of ES.

    3:35 1 day = half of 5min30, should be 2min45? Have i missed something ?
Also isn't Azura's star just the Sun? It is the star that appears below the Steed.

He deserve more than any other to do videos on the lore and even make money out of it.
You're definitely the only person in the entire world that ever addressed the subject. Which is sad.
I knew it was a thing since Oblivion and searched the entire internet (fuck you search engines, especially google) and finally found the one post you made on Reddit.
PS: I'm that one guy that endorsed your video on the nexus XD.

I love the constellation mechanics in these games but I've always considered more of the astrological aspects. I would love to learn more about the signs in constellation and astrological aspects. I'm the sign Lord. Interestingly enough IRL, I heal faster than typical people and am sensitive to temperatures like heat. Heal with fire weakness? Is this just a coincidence? I wonder if this works this way for other people too. LeftoverPat and others...what is your sign and can you scare the undead (ritual), have more energy (mage), or once you run out of energy you don't have a second wind (atronach) or some other coincidental aspect that works with these? Just for fun, of course.

Awesome comment! My personal sign is the Steed b/c I was born in June, so I usually roll characters that are more like me to that. Characters who aren't like me I usually roll Lover for no reason or Atronach for the challenge

@@LeftoverPat Thanks a lot for the compliment! That made my day. :D That's awesome and very interesting. The steed is a great sign. Who wouldn't want to run like the wind? I think I like the Thief for the speed and luck, agility is a bonus, and Mage or Apprentice for the magic boost. Atronach would be a good mage challenge. I think I will make a snake character as an evil challenge character now that I know about the snake.

HO-LEE crap I thought this video was going to be defending skyrim's skill tree. Was positively surprised about it. TES V might have a lot of bland stuff, but the skybox is one of the best things in that game.

You made a mistake at about 2:20. Half of 5m30s is not 2m15s, it's 2m45s
Also I'm confused how 1 rotation of the sky can be 2 days. By definition one rotation of the planet on it's axis (and therefore one 'rotation' of the sky) lasts 1 day Unless that means Earth days (24 hour periods) not Nirn days.
