I ended putting a pair of the Rockford R165X3 into a DIY bluetooth boombox project. I'm impressed with the sound. I also bought some JBL Stage 3, Skar RPX3, and Punch P1650 speakers for future boombox builds. 6.5" speakers are good for the size and sound of boomboxes. The feedback so far are these sound a lot better than what is being commercially offered. These videos helped me make a good choice for the speaker selection. Thanks Mike! Keep the videos coming.
Everyone needs to pay more attention to the sensitivities of the speakers and the output of your head unit your amplifier very good indicator of how they will perform
I’m impressed with jbl. I would say if you’re not planning to put a subwoofer then go with jbl since it does a great job playing lower notes compared to prime. If you’re adding a subwoofer then it wouldn’t matter as much which you choose since you’ll filter out most of the lower hertz from speaker
I like rockfords fosgate r165x3 because it has better clarity then jbl. I had these for my 2015 lancer es with real time amplifier so it helps a lot but with sony avx I don't which one but it was a double din but overall the music was amazing since I owned before trading it in
JBL GTO629 sound way more pleasing to my ears. Warmer/fuller more smooth sound. Well balanced. The Rockford Fosgate speakers are more clear for sure, but they are too hot imo...They would cause me ear fatigue much quicker....Just my humble opinion.
I like the fosgates better still. Yea I hate that it’s lacking booming bass and only does punchy bass. Just sounds more open, natural and nuanced and cleaner more life like as if you are there. Yes, absolutely lacking heavy booming bass but easy fix for those of us already planning on adding a subwoofer as well and having properly tuned and setup.
JBL for the W again. I had no idea all these professional speakers had such a terrible sound disparity. Very glad I found your channel before I wasted money.
@cjon24s69 Exactly! Punch series sounds so much better, I have the p1650's running off a 4 channel amp, they sound so crisp. The Power series is even better from what I've been told
I ordered a set of 4 of the rockford fosgate R165x3 because i have a set of dual rockford fosgate punch p1 12's in the back of my durango and i have always thought that if you want good meshing sounds get matching brands from your door speakers with your subwoofers. I have a cheap crap head unit and door speakers in it now and its loud but i want a more clean tone and something louder so i can hear it better over my true dual glasspacks with my windows down haha the RF speakers werent the most expensive but also not the cheapest either and i ordered a pioneer MVH-280FD high output head unit to pair with the rockford fosgate speakers and subs. I hope this setup delivers the ear torturing loud sound i want.
Mike, you are the man ! Plz jump on the NVX 6.5 X-series and compare it against the Alpine type R 6.5 coaxials ! Your ratings will go through the roof !
Yup. That's the frustrating midrange tone of my fosgate 163x3s. Blech. The highs are actually quite a bit better than this would lead you to believe. But the mids are SUPER loud and harsh around 1k up to around 4500 or 5000 hz. Particularly harsh and full of resonances between 3k and 4.5kHz. I seriously reduce that range by roughly 10db and it MOSTLY evens it out, but even then the severe uneveness of those speakers in that frequency range just makes them nasty, at least as you turn it up. I'm seriously going to try removing my door panels and putting electrical tape over the midrange speakers (the "larger tweeter", it isn't two tweeters actually) on the rockford fosgates in my car to see if just removing that driver solves the problems. I can't imagine that the 6.5" driver can't get up to 5kHz or so, and the other little piezo tweeter clearly comes on strong after that point and is very efficient and satisfying.... so I'm wondering if making them two way will solve the problems. For the cost it's worth a shot. Unfortunately, finding other speakers that fit into my car is tough without tons of work, so I need to see what I can accomplish with these fosgates first.
they sound the same no notable difference for a more expensive speaker. The last video you did with these rockford 3 way vs the more expensive 2 way speakers i did notice a difference 2 2 ways had a brighter sound. good video
The frequency response of the Rockfords is more than enough to reach the highs on the song you're playing. It makes no sense why it isn't even playing, are you sure the tweeters on your speaker are even working?
JBL has better Tweeter, low end seems about the same. You can even see this, those "3 way" with a supertweeter aren't that good, that's why they need a supertweeter in the first place. The small Supertweeter often go bad in the first 4..5 month and you don't hear the difference afterwards without comparison. If you like a good bass with 6.5 system buy a real 3 way or 2 way system, only a 6.5 woofer if you have space for a tweeter. They have a better bass. If you use it on a car stereo without an amp, search for a lightweight speaker with not that much power but more efficiency and low frequency response 40 man eben 30Hz.
Unfortunately you are playing all these tests too loud for your mic and the software is limiting and compressing the sound. I worked in pro audio for years, this is not a guess. I can still pick out glaring deficiencies and some tonal qualities though so I guess all is not lost. Too bad, as I was look forward to this when I found it.

Thanks for your very informative comparisons. Love the JBL GTO 629 but are they any better than the JL C1-650 coaxials. I am looking for a good bassy pair of 6 1/2 speakers around the same price range.Or what else (50w min to 200 max)is better.
Can't speak on how they compare to the JL's but, I can confirm that a $40 set of JVC 6.5 sound FAR better than the GTO629. I should have done a video comparison in the vehicle.
@@LIFEINSPEED If you have a chance, do a comparison with the JBL 629 and JVC CS-ZX640 (or similar JVC CS-HX649). You may be surprised at the results. I only put one JBL on the left channel to compare against the JVC prior to swapping everything to JBL. The JBL went back in the box immediately. Perhaps it was defective out of the box. I don't know how the JBL GTO629 can get such a good review. I purchased a set and received them today.
