  • How to install osb roof deck sheathing. Installation instructions. installing OSB structural roof sheathing panels to a sloped shed Style overhead deck canopy

    First off OSB which is a structural panel can be installed in any direction and still maintain its strength opposed to plywood what you typically cross joists members left and right with the green.
    Second OSB has a dry finish side and a laminated coated side. The installation is always nominated coated side facing the living area for the downside. The dry side is exposed to the exterior.
    The reason for the lamination to face the interior is that it's a protective coating that prevents condensation from dry rotting the OSB panel.
    Typically when installing OSB panels animals are step staggered at least two joist cavities from another as shown in the video
    Typically as you progress upward after 1 course row of 4 foot is installed your next panel should be shifted left or right minimum of two Bay cavities 32in and panels should not but up laterally against each other. You want to try to maintain at least an eighth of an inch Gap which allows for expansion and contraction of the OSP product which prevents roof buckling in extreme Heats and humidity.
    Since this particular shed style sloped roof is installed over top of a frame system where it's joist are based on 16in on Center there's no requirement for a Simpson spacer clip in between the joists cavity. In the case where joists are spaced 24 in apart then there would be a requirement to have a panel clip which is shaped like an H installed between the joist connecting the panels together and automatically providing a 1/8 inch expansion Gap in a lateral form.

    As someone who inspects OSB assemblies on an everyday basis, a few comments:
    - OSB actually stands for Oriented Strand Board. This means the strands of wood are oriented in such a way as to maximize the structural performance of the panels.
    - For most field applications, the panels should be spaced 1/8” at the 8’ seams AND at the 4’ butt joints, as the panels will expand in both the length and width directions.
    - Panels have a smooth side (platen side in the press) and rough side (screen side in the press) and the recommendation for most roof assemblies is that the rough side of the product faces UP since it provides a little extra traction for workers in pitched applications. For most manufacturers the smooth side is stamped with the production information and the rough side receives the nail guide markings. STRUCTURALLY there is no reason to orient the panels one way or the other.
    A few of bonus tips - ALWAYS position the 8’ edges of the panels in a perpendicular orientation to your supports, make sure any cut panels cross at least two support spans to ensure the structural integrity of your cut panels mirrors that of your full panels, and install the panels using the specified 8d nails - avoid staples whenever possible!

      What he said, "about maintaining g an 1/8" gap between ends as well a sides of 4 x 8 0riented Strand panel seams.

      @@rudygeorgiamulesandcountry1594 - Because of the specific orientation of the wood fibers, the panels expand about the same amount across the 4’ width as they do along the 8’ length.

    I appreciate all of your videos and you have been very responsive to people's question! Very professional! I see that you will run the OSB all the way up to the existing roof. What is the process for dealing with the transition? I understand you are going to use Roll roofing and metal flashing over the transition area, but I was hoping you could elaborate on how the material is installed. For example is the metal first or the roll roofing?

    • @Chrdiy
      @Chrdiy  3 года назад +1

      I usually run two parts. Felt up to and under the shingle of the of the roof that's being tied into. Then I put minimum 12in wide strip of flashing horizontally centering 6 in across the deck scene where it ends at the roof tie in. This prevents sinking or settling of the new roof to be installed. Then install your roof membrane all the way up slightly under the tie in existing roof. Then I run additional flashing 24 in horizontally. Roughly 16 in up under the shingle of an existing house at approximately 8 in overlapping the new membrane roof to the shed style roof no fasteners exposed

      Spacer clips are a must have between each joist and all edges. If joist spacing is 16" on center you can use 7 16th isb or 3/4. If jkist are spaced 24" o.c. you can only use 3/4". Good luck

    Thank you for your video. Can I use a different or better plywood than OSB panel for the roof?

    • @Chrdiy
      @Chrdiy  Год назад

      Well you can use whatever you want but you have to remember any kind of plywood is multiple laminate sheets glued together and your subject to exterior weather conditions like moisture. So usually when you use the OSB the skin or laminate side which is coated faces the bottom. The dry side or unlaminated side faces up and then the roof gets installed directly to that. So the practical usefulness of OSB is that there's no way for it to delaminate as the roof coats the top and the bottom which is exposed to any type of atmosphere or moisture has a protective skin coating on it. But you can still use plywood if you think at this point it's a better product

    • @Chrdiy

      Never found the need to angle edge. Not furniture. Ply or osb. Small fap is acceptable as long as one surface does not project past the other creating a shelf like lip. Set so each panl above and below touches one another at the underside along with being completely flush to the rafters
