There are two kinds of people in this world- those who have never heard of Layer Cake, and those who absolutely love it. Everything about that movie is pure class- the dialogue, the performances, the camera work, the soundtrack... one of those rare perfect films.
@@deanodog3667 yeah, sorry, I should have included the third (minority) category of people who have no taste in cinema or who like to be different for the sake of it. I guess even masterpieces like the Godfather or Taxi Driver have a few people who just didn't "get" them.
Be number 3! So that answered my question about what happened to the bank crews, also learned the the story author was in the life and that the movie is respected by you guys. Their deliberate use of camera angles lenses and lighting to give a costless Hollywood look puts it up alongside any of the American greats, it's luxurious stuff and now we know authentic too, thanks to you:)
Hi Stephen it's trev Dec singer songwriter here just to say hello and hope your well mate this one is one of my favourite films ever good one Stephen thanks declan
I remember watching this movie over a decade ago, I was on a British gangster film kick (I live in the US) and I came across this movie. It thoroughly subverted every expectation I had going in. And it's definitely my favorite of all the British gangster movies! It's nice to see a reaction like this, because I talk about this movie all the time with my friends.
Sir Stephen you are getting better with every review youdo and being number 3 in the pecking order is the best advice I’ve heard in a long time. Mick Johnno (Brookside) as Cocky Curtis Warren was a genius review. Please keep reviewing these movies you’re a breath of fresh air you have no ego at all.
I was Chris Wheeler’s number 2 chef at Stoke Park club when they were filming this great movie (the club has also featured in some of the best James Bind movies) and this iconic British gangster movie features some great names - Danial Craig (we all know where he ended up....) Colm Meany (star trek) Sienna Miiller, Tom Hardy, Dexter Fletcher (the guy behind ‘Bohemian Rhapsody movie’,jMichael Gambon, Kenneth Cranham and so many more...
Newly subbed to the channel, so just going through all your reviews and breakdowns. Obviously not knowing all your content yet tho. Could I suggest Gangster No 1, the original Krays film with the kemp brothers, and not sure if you've reviewed the Essex Boys, Rise of the footsoldier or the business but hopefully you have. Also looking forward to watching your gangs of London and Heat reviews, too.
Interesting how like Craig and Hardy's characters are clearly Oxbridge and have gone into crime as businessmen not looking for trouble but IT DOESNT WORK LIKE THAT!
When he tells us they firm swapped out the gear for some cheese , this is very possible as the purer coke came in solid looking yellowish blocks, the white powder was a result of the multiple cuts that occurred along the way.
Sincerest respect to your break down of ‘classic’ films of genre and the application of your experience and understanding. But he didn’t die when was shot in the end. How do I know that ? The film is based the book ‘Layer Cake- JJ Connelly’, indeed this is a film with Matthew Vaughan’s perspective too. But there is a second book called ‘Viva La Madness’, which follows the tale on a little. 🙏🏼
Excellent reaction Stephen. Had forgotten about layer cake, great part for gambon. May watch this weekend. Now come on Stephen, we wanna see you react to ‘ fix bayonets ‘ …..

Have you ever spoke with Jimmy XXL since coming home I believe he’s on straight n narrow now for years too. Anyways. I must agree, I found a lot of familiarity in that film but didn’t know the background you mentioned. I think time to have a butcher’s again , been years now

Such a great movie. Many chilling parts. I felt the ending kinda cheaped out the main character, but loved watching him try to figure things out at the constant cost of his life if he didn't.
Fantastic. The intro was brilliant. You have a great hearty infectious laugh. Brilliant review. Yeah I always thought that the Eastern European gangsters were really tough. Especially the war hardened ones
Love this film. Watched it loads. Still haven't a bleedin' clue about the ending! I initially thought he was clipped because he was trying to walk away from the life.
Nah mate it's was always from the first time i seen it was about Sidney bird she was a 10 and Sidney couldn't stand to lose her so if i can't have you he won't either like a fatal attraction its always the one you least expect he can be as skinny as a pretzel but when you have a 9mm in your hands you might as well be god with the power of life and death
Claim to fame, I met the girl dancing with Sienna Miller in the club scene, her name is Layla, met her in a place called The Lounge (in Liphook I think), friend of hers used to do the polo horses with my now wife! ;) Had a most pleasant evening. Hadn't been out clubbing for several years and didn't realise you weren't allowed outside the place with a drink... Security stopped me going outside, said I ain't been out for years, he took it to mean I had been in prison for quite a while, stepped aside and let me exit, drink in hand! Just hadn't been out because every where I went I seemed to end up in a ruck with plonkers, being 6.4 and shaven headed everyone wanted to start on the big fella! Funny evening, got free drinks every time I went in there after that. Nice girl, eye catching and smelt so good. Hazy days.
I’m not condoning it for you anyway shape or form, but being number three is probably one of the best bits of advice to give anyone in the criminal underworld 🙌
Its a bit like Judas Pig the book although this was a book too, everyone having each other over and some even working with the police is the truth really from what I`ve seen it shows it in this film. Jamie Foreman, Tamar Hussian and Kenneth Graham are so authentic.
0:03 I do something similar if I’m eating something like peas. My dad would always say “Stop eating like that you look like a prisoner” Still to this day I have no idea what that means. I probably did more time by the time I was 16 than he ever has in his life sense to him. I don’t know who taught me not to be a coward. But maybe it was more of do as I say not as I do

i always love the ending of this movie, its so real. All the crazy shit that happens during the movie and how the main character artfully managed to dance around the death and destruction.....and it was some idiot upset about his girlfriend (that probably wasnt even into him other than the money) that shot him in the end
Fantastic assessment of a lot of the life and your right if you are ".. very". Lucky you will forget what shit smells like me old mucker lol great movie 9/10 is a fair assessment
it's a commentary about no matter how smart you are in the underworld, multiple times you get killed for stupid reasons by totally idiots. I mean he dodged entire gangs, mobsters, east European assassins but gets shot by a chicken shit guy too hung up for his girl, especially it was the protagonist who saved him before
IMO , you need to do a more in depth review of this movie. I can only assume you are on a time constraint on youtube. but there is a lot of detail you are jumping over. like the guy who hits up his old friend and he beats the shit out of him after putting up with his bs. the real reason he took a beating is he got the black guy pinched. anyways, i appreciate your insight, TY !

The sound is amazing in this film as well, the music and that, all on point. It all works brilliantly with what's being shown on screen.
