It’s a film that weaves a complex narrative filled with twists and turns. It’s also known for its sleek cinematography, memorable characters and a soundtrack that is not only, sorry for the pun, kick ass, but gives off Fit’s own atmosphere of “cool”. But how did this all happen? Sit back and take it all in as we dive into WTF Happened To This Movie.

After seeing Layer Cake you'll never hear Duran Duran Ordinary World ever again without seeing the diner scene
The diner/cafe still exists! It's my regular spot in London, it literally hasn't changed at all
@@jacobsisland1129haven’t they cleaned up the tea bags?
That scene is still badass
Absolute masterpiece..I watch it twice a year from beginning to end. When I recommend it to people who have not seen it they are completely blown away by it wondering how it got past them…thanks for the video I really enjoyed it.
Layer Cake is still one of the best gangster movies ever made. Vaughn created something special with the story, actors, music and cinematography with this one.
One of the most underrated soundtracks of all time here ❤
One of my absolute favourites! I happened to watch it when it was first released on DVD, it didn't get a big theatrical release where I live. At first I thought it was a Guy Ritchie movie, having seen Lock, Stock and Snatch, but was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't.
It is a shame it didn't get more recognition then but I think it has become somewhat of cult classic over the years.
The bbq sauce already been deployed and the trolleys
Lucifer 🤘
Snatch is countered with devil's own situation with the IRA situation 😭
Colm Meaney is my favourite side character in this film. Just gets overlooked a lot but just nails it here.
Phenomenal movie. One of my favorite movies of all time. Easily top 50, it made the DVD collection. So many quotable parts in this movie, soundtrack, acting, characters, 😂 the more i talk about it, its even better than im giving it credit for.
I always was disappointed he didn’t get to sleep with Sienna Miller tbh, I did feel he was let down 🤣
When they snatched him as she was getting ready makes me angry every single time too! 😂
My heart says XXXX didn’t die, given how he’s dressed he clearly got to the hospital, fled the country, changed his name and became a private detective.
In the book sequel he survives and heads to the Caribbean.
"You're not in there because I like ya..."
God, I love this film.
This is by far Daniel Craig's best movie.
I love this movie, Layer Cake is a brilliant debut directed film wit a priceless cast! When I saw Daniel hold the gun and walking through the hall after picking it up for the first time, my first thought was..."this guy would be a perfect Bond!". FF a few years later...
But yeah, this film. Is an instant CLASSIC!
I rewatch this about once a year, it's the pinnacle of this style of movie. I love Ritchie gangster flicks, and even stuff like "Rise of the Footsoldier" but "Layer Cake" is just so expertly crafted that you have no idea what is coming one scene to the next. Tip top acting from all involved, I especially like your call out of Gambon who smashed his role, menace emanated from him almost every second he was on screen.
Care to mention a couple of films in your rewatch list? As I too have a list that begins with Tom Cruise's Collateral.
I truly love the style and I recently rewatched this and was writing notes on how the characters dressed as well. Unlike Ritchie I liked it didn't have much humor and it wasn't a Ritchie film. Wished we had a sequal with the same actors as it could have done with one. Vaughn said he was busy the next couple of years and Craig then got busy with Bond so it never happened but they had a script ready for it.
Rocknrolla
@@paulmurphy8549 Which was my favorite Ritchie movie until The Gentlemen. It's great, but I still think Layer Cake is the tops.
The cafe scene is one of my favorites in the film so well directed
The ending of this movie still make me angry all these years later.....
That ending does punch u in the gut. The underrated and little seen London Boulevard with Colin Farrell has a very similar ending that crushes u as well. If u haven't seen it I highly recommend it. It's another English gangster gem reminiscent of Vaugn and Guy Ritchie.
It still pisses me off. Seeing the short clip in this video reminded me of how angry I was the first time. Great twist obviously, but it sucked so much.
You play with fire eventually you get burnt! That’s what happened to him.
Read, “Viva La Madness” by JJ Connolly. It’s the sequel to the book, Layer Cake.
If it is any consolation they said in interviews that xxxx most probably survives. They were hoping to do a sequel, but Matthew Vaughn and Daniel Craig got so busy that it never came to this.
In the novel he gets shot by Sydney too, then is in a coma for a few weeks and finally recuperates and moves to Venezuela.
Haven’t seen this in donkeys years. Every main part in this film is so well realised and played.
I watched this when I was 17, and it’ll always be one of my favorite movies
Ii'm not big in to gangster films but I did enjoy this one a whole lot.
I didnt know gambon had died. That makes me sad. He was incredible.
I've heard of this, but never saw it before... so Im going to jump out of this video before there are spoilers
Great film with a very british ending as the cherry on top
The cast of this movie is incredible
They all went on to do some interesting projects and made sth of themselves in the industry
Kick ass movie along with The Long Good Friday with a younger Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren ❤
Oh yes, The long Good Friday is absolutely phantastic! If you look very carefully you might notice Alan Ford in a very small role as one of Harold's men.
Love this film.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Thank you for the ending! ❤
Fantastic film.
DC is hands down the best bond, layer cake is a great movie I often watch it and still feel entertained
@a0973755990 no thanks dickface i know a scammer when i see one
Love that film, great video!
It was then when I fall in love with Sienna Miller 😍
Don’t piss on my pocket and tell me it’s raining…
Layer Cake is a superb gangster movie and the cast is fabulous. The soundtrack is great and the twists and turns within the story are great. Along with Rock n Rolla this is the best Brit gangster movie ever made and one of the very best British movies ever made.
It's a great movie. I heard Barbara Broccoli decided on Daniel Craig for Bond after seeing Layer Cake. I only watched it after they announced he was going to be Bond and once I saw it I was sold. He really is the best Bond.
Such a good film, one of my favourites.
Well the ending..is remending of Carlitos way..
I saw this movie when it was released and I loved it. Good story, very stylish visually, many familiar faces, pretty good soundtrack... I remembered Daniel Craig from Tomb Raider, The jacket and Munich. So I was super hyped when I found out that he will play James Bond. I was never a Bond fan before, I knew just 2-3 movies, one of them Golden eye which I actually only watched because of Sean Bean.
On a side note while the Bond girls never became stars (with a few exceptions) both Lara Croft love interests became pretty famous.
Such a great movie, one of my favourites.
Love this movie!
Gambon was great in it too
Love this movie, but the blu-ray doesn't appear to be in print.
Basically the same plot as Carlitos Way 🤔🇬🇧🎥😎🙌👍
Great film 10/10
Question is... When we will see the sequel "Viva la madness"
Such an underrated movie doesn't get enough credit also this movie got Daniel Craig the role of James Bond
Nothing, they run a story to run something else for the elite cult situation 😭😂
Matthew Vaughn said his ending wasn't something that had been seen in American movies?...hmmm...I guess he missed John Leguizamo in Empire, (2002) where he's killed in the end. Both movies were similar...and in recent yrs, I really care a lot-sees protagonist rosamund pike, also killed in the end by a seemingly insignificant character we briefly see in the first act.
Another Craig film I recommend people check out is Some Voices (2000).
"The Business" is another good OG flik, also has Tamir hassan in it, great actor...and "sexy beast" with Ray winstone and Ben Kingsley and Ian Mcshane...
Man, gangster Dumbledore is badass! 😂
This book was unreadable (I tried on several occasions), but somehow, the movie good.
Daniel Craig's best film.
"Layer cake 🍰" was also an early name for the hydrogen bomb😊 also a cult-banger favourite 😊
great movie
I AM and always have been a James Bond fan. Sean Connery is my favorite Bond mainly because he reminds me of my grandfather but I actually like the Craig Bond movies the most as a whole because it's one long story of James Bond from beginning to end. However I have yet to see layer cake
I remember watching this when it came out and the scene where he picks out his gun from Colm Meaney he gives a little look with his gun that is so Bond it's funny. Right there I thought he could do Bond. Too bad after the great Casino Royal and the solid Skyfall the other 3 were duds imo. The excuse for Quantum of Solace was a writers strike but the last 2 are turgid and woke. Bond was reduced to a way too serious bore. Honestly, the Mission Impossible series took over for Bond for fun and escapism. Hearing what they want to do with Bond I think he's truly doa.
HE DIDN'T DIE AT THE END OF THE MOVIE!
-----------
The movie was so good, I had to find the source material, the novel it is based on. Found out it has a sequel (yes, Bond didn't die), which was also quite an interesting book. Of course, being fully immersed in this now forgotten version of the UK, I needed more... so I decided to read the first book, too.
As it differs from the movie, I didn't have a feeling that I already knew everything while reading it - recommend it to everyone, no matter if seen the movie or not.
It's a pity they still haven't produced a movie or series based on the sequel, like it was planned with Jason Statham as XXXX (total downgrade after Daniel Craig, but I don't care - better something than nothing).
There was talk of doing the sequel with Jason Statham playing the lead but it never ended up happening
😊😊great
It’s recognised as one of the great modern British gangster films that’s what happened
This movie is awesome.
good to know the bluray is a good product
Does anyone else look at the suits in this film and really love the style? I loved George Harris's suits he wears in this film.
I hate the ending so much ill never watch it again. Wtf was that
Well, while bleeding you don't see him actually die so he might survive - as in the original novel. I remember that back then I read that they were thinking about a sequel, but it never materialized.
It's actually callled L 4 yer cake.. really strange name for a film or anything for that matter
Great Movie!! - Welcome to the Layer Cake Son... =p
They should make a second movie. Maybe a third. XXXX revived and survived after 6 Month Coma. Layer Cake Revenge
there was a script ready but Craig was busy with Bond and wasn't able to commit even though he loved this role.
5:37 who?? You mean Colm?
That name is pronounced collum, like Callum but with an O
Tell me you played too much rdr without telling me.
Fun fact, the VA for Arthur is Irish and said it infuriated him
To no end about how all the Americans kept saying ‘comb’ o Driscoll. There’s a funny interaction between Sean and Kieran (also, that should be ciaran and pronounced differently), where Sean says ‘wtf is a comb o Driscoll? It’s colm!’ Etc
Danny boy was bond in this film.
Right choice!!£
🤔
RIP Micheal Gambon
Tom hardy was brilliant, his quiet performance makes him stick out wonderfully. ❤️
Is it just me or does the young Tom Hardy (Black Hawk Down/Layer cake era) look so different then he does now? I rewatched layer cake this year for the first time since I was a teenager and I didn't even recognise Tom.
It was the perfect movie until the "Carlitos Way" ending. Not as original as this video suggests.
Wow
Great video...just disappointed that it failed to mention George Harris was the captain of the ship that attempted to smuggle Indiana Jones in the Raiders of the Lost Ark. But hey, not everyone is perfect 😊
wasnt layer cake just a guy ritchie rip off and guy ritchie ripped off tarantino. so it just got lost in the tarantino rip off world
Vaugn said the script originally was very much like snatch but he took out all of the humour in it as he wanted to make a more serious film
Kinda mid tbh
Just like this well thought out comment eh ;-)
When Craig got announced as Bond I thought he looked sh!t.
Then I watched Layer Cake, and knew he was going to be a brilliant Bond.
I watched Layer Cake after casino royale, I did however watch the live announcement of Craig becoming the next JB and thought he would be shit fast forward to the movie and I was well and truly blown away,he's now my favourite bond and whoever takes over has big shoes to fill
I'd seen Layer Cake when Craig was announced, and you could tell who else had seen Layer Cake by what they said about the announcement.
