And all that was dropped due to budget, companies don't invest into that anymore, now you will most likely get a licensed generic song that will put you to sleep or some nonsense made in 5 minutes on a kiddy app ...
I lost all interest in game music so as games too, it's so predictable and all off the shelf, no more actual soundtracks for most of them.
Heck I remember Resident Evil 2 Remake won best soundtrack award on an event meanwhile that game doesn't even have an actual soundtrack, it have generic drones, one boss battle theme that sounds like some generic score of 20 seconds stuck in a loop while the original iconic RE2 soundtrack from the 90s was locked behind a paywall (which most of the buyers didn't had access to and was hard to obtain too due to an error) and even that was missing more then half of the tracks since the remake game was completely cut left and right and changed so much to the point it's an entire different game with zero effort involved ...
AND THAT WINS AN AWARD?! F THAT!!! Later someone wonder why all of us quit video games and especially don't care who wins what when it's all just a sad joke and irrelevant, it's lost upon us for a long time now.
Soundtracks that are iconic like the Chrono Cross, Need For Speed 1234, Silent Hill 1234... All is gone for a long time now.
Reminds me of how often when I throw a kids party for relatives etc and let some of the old music on from old PS1 PS2 era games, the kids beg me to make them a CD or copy it to USB so they can listen to it at home ... says a lot that even new gen love the old stuff more not just music but the games itself.

Yeah, ever listened to Need for Speed The Run to not even go out of the game series? It's an absolute banger fully dynamic track and composed by Brian Tyler (a very renowned composer of lots of movies as well) who even used stuff like closing doors, blinkers, and even lowering window sounds in the mix in genius ways. This is just pure nostalgia talking from you, there are many cool game sounds long after this the period you're describing. They just didn't happen when you were a kid and therefore don't have the child memories attached to the music. There's a whole documentary on how he made the track somewhere, and it's really cool. Art isn't dead, and as long as there are humans alive, it won't die.

Dude, such a pleasant surprise to see you review the music from this game!!! I did a ton of bass sessions for EA Sports in the late 90’s (including nfs I II and III: hot pursuit and nba live 98/99/2000), but didn’t have a PS 1 so never got to play the game so never knew what they used lol. The guys that I got to work with for the NFS soundtracks (Saki Kaskas (RIP), Jeff Dyck, Alistair Hirst, and Traz Damji) were all absolute geniuses who were way ahead of their time, and the sessions were some of the most enjoyable (and musically challenging) that I’ve ever done. YES, VINDICATION! At long last somebody decided to make a proper video on NFS2's soundtrack. Playing this game so much as a kid definitely shaped my musical tastes in some manner, and eventually, several years later, after getting unlimited access to the internet, I got to listen to this soundtrack on its own, it's aged like fine wine. All killer, no filler. The tune "Hellbent For Lederhosen" deserves special props for the incredible unexpected switch to polka instrumentation, with the musical motif repeating later with harmonised electric guitars. And of course, it took me well over 20 years between growing up, learning English properly and becoming a metalhead for the play on words in the song title to finally land on me.

NFS 3 basicaly shaped my taste in music introducing me to DnB / Acide Trance on the EDM part and Rock / Metal, and amplified my love for folk music, as some songs feature exotic scales and instruments.
The fact that the music is made out of sections to fit the part of the track it is played on added so much to the feeling speed, pressure, urgency, and the style !
to this day I still got some songs of NFS 2 & 3 in my playlist that I comback to as my comfort zone.

The NFS3HP ones did not just loop but were also dynamic, as a first to this series?
They changed dynamically depending on where you were on the track and the speed you were going.
I figured this out the hard way trying to record the tracks directly from the game back in the day, and being utterly confused waiting forever for those good parts (that never appeared because the car wasn't moving).
I think this was exclusively for the Aquilla 303/Hydrus 606/Cetus 808, tracks.
Also I think with some tools you could get the samples out of the game ... and even edit the maps. Those were crazy times.
      Absolutely legendary stuff.

Alright, now you have to check out the Ridge Racer series! It has some of the greatest soundtracks in racing game history IMO. RR Type 4 and RR7 in particular have some absolute grooves that make you feel the same way you described the test track music made you feel.
My personal pick would be Naked Glow from RR Type 4, as it has a funky switch-up on the same level as the track showcased in this video.
Anyway, car related content in general is greatly appreciated for car guys like me and many others it seems, as cars and sounds of course go hand in hand. Great vid as always!

Would love a NFS2SE series on all the tracks.
Would also love that car deep dive as well (I drive an Audi S1, and used to have an Abarth 595, so I, too, love the sounds of cars!)

So many game soundtracks formed the way I experience music and the genres I love today. And I'm gonna ask you once again: do an analysis of the Sonic 3 chrome gadget zone. That song goes hard.
