@@GoodBicycle I understand, but really hate that. I probably undercharge as a hobby mechanic, putting in 10 hours on 1 bike, just to change the brake pads and brake oil...
Mystery metal again. I couldn't figure out where it came from. That wouldn't be the first time. That happens with these mystery hubs. I've found that grease mixed with automatic transmission fluid ( 1 part grease 3 parts ATF.) works well it will keep tha pawls from getting sticky and stays inside. You can use grease for that race at the base of the free hub. Some on the pawls and ratchet ramps and place the outer over it. Throw someof the mixture in the outside race put the remaining bearings in and cover with a generous amount more. That will last a long time and the detergents in the ATF will keep it clean. That mixture works well in shift levers and any kind of derailleur/brake pivots. Keep up the good work 🙏.
When everything's working as it should the spacers keep things tight enough to roll smoothly without binding. But as the races wear down due to use or insufficient, the wrong kind of or dried grease, the spacers need to be slightly thinner to keep things smooth, otherwise play develops which accelerates wear. The trick is to find thinner spacers that aren't too much thinner. We're talking tenths of a mm here. I had to fabricate my own spacer out of an old washer as I couldn't find the right sized one. Worked great and all play is gone with very smooth action. Btw, best to oil and not grease the pawls as they might stick if it gets too cold. Grease is for the ball bearings. Also would be nice to let people know what solvents you used to clean everything. I used mineral spirits.
Awesome job sir! In the process myself as we speak, man that thing is on tight!!! It took 2 custom build tools and an impact screwdriver to persuade it to open up for me. Hello! Do you know the technical name for this type of hub? I'm in need of the piece you removed at 1:37 (mine broke), but I don't know its name, and whenever I Google "Shimano hub", or "Shimano freehub", I only can find the more modern type, which only need a big allen key to disassemble... I don't think you can buy that piece at all (it's called the "bearing cone"). You'd have to buy the whole freehub but even those are no longer available from Shimano if that's your brand. You might find one from a supplier online that has some unsold inventory and replace that freehub completely. I bought a spare hub from a community bike shop just to have a spare freehub before they become altogether unavailable.
@@MrJx4000yeah, I figured that wouldn't be easy. Do you know the name of this kind of hub, though? I can't find any reference to it, other than disassembling tutorials, but no specific name for the system on which to cling on to search for one...Thanks!
@@borisnot, you're asking about wheel hub itself, right? If there's no name imprinted on the outer shell, then it's anybody's guess. However, they probably used a freehub from Shimano. You'll have to go to a bike shop maybe and ask them. And you never know--they might even have a spare bearing cone laying around if they're any good.
Free hub bearing cone. No chance of buying one of them, fhb spares are unavailable as they are not intended for service. Even if you could find one it would be pot luck on the thread size and intended bearing size etc. Replace the entire unit, they’re very cheap. If the hub is unbranded it’s most likely formula.
Indeed, it is very difficult to find a cup for the sleeve and freehub separately. You can still buy a complete freehub from Shimano, but from noname manufacturers you have to completely re-spoke the wheel
Is your freehub body also held in with a 12 sided screw? I was trying to remove it with an 11mm hex but it wasn't moving. Then I did the same thing as you and just serviced it while it's still on the hub.
shimano is easy to remove by unscrewing hollow bolt but i had some no name hub that had opposed side bolt that additionally secures freewheel body , so it must be unscrewed first and then freewheel body from hub

I don't remember, 20 + -
i saw in a video are 25/25 balls perside
depending on which model
Bonsoir.

@@GoodBicycle
8:11 no here goes only drop of oil not grease, or 20 times less grease
thank you
I'll second that! I learnt that the hard way when I serviced my freehub for the first time. Needless to say, I got a sluggish wheel.
How many modern freehubs use loose bearings? Not many. Fixing those up is a bit of a lost art. Good job on that one though.

Most formula hubs fitted to the lower end are all loose ball. Shimano are keeping cup and cone for some of their high end road sets but everything else moving to sealed. Virtually every sealed free hub is loose bearings, so almost everyone not on a dt Swiss, hope, ck, i9 etc is on loose ball.
Thank you for your response. Most cyclists who are not athletes in their everyday life have freehubs with loose balls in their bikes.
@@GoodBicycle Actually, I would suspect that they have freewheels with loose ball bearings...
Yeah, that happens too.

Well I'm no cyclist but I do have to repair the damned things, so my question is what do they call that infernal spring that holds the pawls in place, can I buy them and would the pawls work without it, cleaned up while I wait for ebay to show up? So technically that's 3 questions but the quality of your audio speaks volumes compared with the 12 utube vids I just seen. Well done. Subd!
Thank you for your comment. Pawls will not work without a spring It's quite difficult to find such a spring ring, we remove them from used freewheels in our workshop. Sometimes you can find repair kits ring + pawls from novatek on sale. I also read that a thin guitar string is used to fix the pawls, but this method has not been tested.

I make exactly the same sound when I find a rouge ball bearing 😊
🤣
Greetings from Romania and thank you for the clip. please tell me, what size the balls are ?
Thank you for watching. In this freehub, the balls are 3.17 mm or 1/8 inch
9:21 wrong order of spacers, first must be the thickest spacer
can you share why you would to that? also where does the marked side go?
@@jurikristjouw if thinner goes first,it can flip/bend and blocks clucks sprogs,i had that situation where after 50 km pedals freely spun in both directions
Perfect!

Why not exchange some new G3 level balls?
The video demonstrates how to service a freehub bike when there are no replacement parts available😉
😀👍😀👍 nice
like!!!
6:11 i bet you clean bike by water that entered into hub and your sprog rusted
We didn't ask what the owner was doing with his bike 😉
Tiene un fetiche con los imanes! Saludos
Gracias por su comentario 😘
4:42 do not tell me it is water
It's not water, it's a cleaner 😊
Could you share what is the cleaner? Thanks

I can't imagine why sealed bearings were invented
For the more expensive segment of bike parts😊
