fun fact, when sonar was first being studied and invented, scientists kept seeing weird things on the radar. at first they thought it was the ocean floor but then saw that it kept moving up and down depending on time of day and such. it was swarms of billions of lanternfish. we have a species of fish so prevalent in the world that it messed with sonar readings and essentially came up as a solid wall on radar due to how many there were

@@_mortiam 'medium' sized animals tend to be around the size of your hand to the size of a basketball. and most animals without skeletons are the ones that get bigger, probably because they're not getting their bones flattened. but most of the scary looking things (besides giant squids and the like) are actually fairly small. the photos are just zoomed in for more detail but that makes people think it's all giant and scary
edit: i just realized that yes scary is relative. the hundred foot long jellyfish and siphonophores can be terrifying to some people, but alas i mostly mean scary as in tons of teeth sharp things
some of the 'scariest' fish you see in those compilations, the viperfish, dragonfish, MOST species of anglerfish, and even the thick tube that is the barreleye fish only get up to about 6 inches long. not that size matters of course

In the horror movie "Shark Night" they feature cookie cutter sharks as one of the captured species. It's funny you described an ice cream scoop, because that is exactly how the cookie cutter shark's jaws work. Instead of a top and bottom jaw, this sharks lower jaw is attached just like an ice cream scoop, with a 180 degree rotation then they just scoop out a hemisphere of fish meat. ;p Nice podcast.
