When we talk about things being traded across empires and bringing merchants to faraway lands, we usually think of resources like gold or silver or diamonds, but what about salt?

U: Salt gives u seasonal independence
Me a vegetarian:.......Ermmm
Second reply
@@pastrychefiii822 Salt lets you have seasonal independence too...
You get to eat more than potatoes over winter bcuz salt lets you preserve more fickle foods that wud spoil over that time. Pickling!
How north is too north to harvest Salt from seawater ? As i have understood that they did/used to harvest salt from white sea
Salt lake city*
Salt went from an essential mineral to a figure of expression when someone is triggered
Yes XD, I disnt realise
How did the word salty even become meaning triggered anyway
@@ChairmanMeow1 I mean, yas
Yeah but take that with a grain of salt
Bro i see you everywhere but im not critizing you lol
Imagine a person trying to make a weapon using chlorine and sodium but they end making salt.
That's quite anachronistic, we couldn't really make those things. Yes, make. Because those two are quite reactive, it's hard to find them irl just laying aorund.
@@daddyleon ya
If I made that mistake, I would be pretty salty......
You don't say!
Weapon for...?
Can’t pin two comments at once, but for those who noticed the mistake, yes, Lüneburg is in fact actually in Niedersachsen, not Schleswig-Holstein

Yea, immediately noticed that. I wonder why... (I live in the region)

I don't need sleep. I need salt.

Once a valuable asset that can make or break empires now something we throw on the road.
The first time I went to Canada, I was confused about the small pieces of broken glass scattered through the roads and sidewalks. Later someone explained it to me.
Ha ha snowplow go brtttttt
That's not the same Salt.
Ancient emperor (if they were around today): "Nooo you can't throw that on the road, that's expensive!"
@@scythal it's just salt 🧂 😕 🙄
Loved the Chubbyemu and Bill Wurtz references. 👍🏻
Came searching for this comment when he mentioned Hyponatremia 😄
"It also caused wars "
Me: IS THIS AN AS-SA(U)LT?
ERRRR
If any of you want to see how a late medieval/early renaissance salt mine looked like, I highly recommend Wieliczka mine near Cracow in Poland.
It's also a museum of renaissance art as miners sculpted a lot of stuff into the mine, like a whole chapel made of salt or famous Polish Kings.
Gotta totally second this guy. That salt mine in Poland is incredible. Maybe I’ll manage to see it in person one day.
the longest running salt mine in history, mind you
How interesting, salt has such a rich and beautiful history. Might need to drink some water after this though...
I drink my water salty
A slang word in turkish for saying something expensive "tuzlu" which means "salty" now I see...
In portuguese too, when some product is very expensive we say the price is "salty"
I'm so happy you're actually taking the time to pronounce the words correctly (from what I can tell), because so many people just don't bother.
7:38 "India-pendence"
I physically reeled in disgust at this terrible pun
Lol, the "bharat" of a joke!
Me distracted at only 15 seconds in trying to think of another rock that humans eat 🤔
Humans can eat any rocks, provided they're hungry enough.
Technically ice is a mineral form of water. Would that count?
Ice isn't a rock can't @ anyone or whatever
This is crazy I actually just ate something that had salt on it just now!
Not very crazy
@@fullmetalalchemist9126 ??? What do you mean?
@@MateoQuixote bro salt is in almost all foods

I am dissapointed that you did not mention Carthage xD
My region of Aveiro in Portugal is historicaly known for having salt pads next to the ocean, which have brought wealth to the area for centuries.
I was simply watching another great KhAnubis video, and ''Mellieha'' made it even greater!
Love from Valletta, Malta!
I pronounced it right, I presume?
I was watching this video which came up randomly as I am doing a guiding course and a tour about salt in Malta..and Mellieha came up.. it is my home town :)
This is really helpful in understanding Triangle Strategy.
When I think of salt, I think of it primarily as a means of melting ice. However, that’s just from living in a cold climate half the year.
your videos are always interesting, thanks for posting
Super surprised to see Lüneburg mentioned in a RUclips video like this! Great video!
Thanks! Very informative!
Me scrollin thru my sub feed....
"Oooooh! Salt!!"
Food history is a big special interest of mine and the history of salt is just so fascinating. My fave tidbit from history about salt is the fact that salt pirates were a deadly force to be reckoned with. Bcuz the easiest way to extract salt is to extract it from someone else's holds who has alrdy extracted it from harder to extract from areas
Food History is a great subject. Best of all is probably the story of how the early European explorers brought back from the Americas 3 nutrient-dense foods (potatoes, corn, and beans) and 3 stimulants (sugar, cocoa, and tobacco) which allowed them to grow stringer and multiply and conquer the world.
Time to invest in salt for big gains in hypertension.
Omg, this channel is awesome! Why didn't I discover it earlier?
Were learning about salt yay
Great video! I never realized the importance of salt. It makes so much sense now why the people of El Dorado, Colombia traded their salt for the northerners gold.
I recently read about the annilation of the Muisca population. 😔😔😔 they were rich with salt and traded for gold. But the Spaniards were convinced they were a city of gold.
Salt Tax: yet another way gamers are oppressed
Don't ask why I'm here so early, I couldn't tell you even if I wanted to
I know though
4:54 Yo big props on the pronunciation of "Alte Salzstraße"
I actually really enjoy your commercials for sponsors. Seems weird to say so, but they are just silly enough. Also, salt!
It's interesting how way back then they found out about all this stuff. I already new salt was used for things but it's good to relearn and learn more. Miss being in school, for history classes

A few moments later: searches how salt changes the world 🙂
Love this channel, it's such an inspiration to my own channel! I love the way that you take an obscure topic and then go in on it! I hope that my channel one day holds a candle to your own @KhAnubis
So I came for the salt history lesson. But have to say well done on the ad. Actually watched the whole thing and laughed. 😂
100k nice!
I was today years old when I've learned that the word salad actually comes from salt. Praise you, KhAnubis!
Very nice video. Little mistake : Lüneburg is not in modern Schleswig Holstein, but in Lower Saxony
Saying "low salt presence in blood means hyponatremia" sounds backwards. Like it would sound to say that your head hurting gives you a headache. It would have been better to say that hyponatremia is the condition of you having low salt presence in your blood.
KhAnubis, i am SALTY!!!! because you totally got geography wrong. Lüneburg is in Niedersachsen
Damn it you’re right, gonna fix this in the pinned comment
5:00 Lüneburg isn’t situated in modern-day Schleswig-Holstein, but in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). It is south of the river Elbe that marks the border between these two states.
0:49 Isn't anyone going to notice about KhAnubis logo not having a blue mask?
Because that‘s the normal logo, the profile picture is just a variant wearing a mask to remind people to wear one themselves
Alright fine when I renew my Nord - I’ll use your code. That was good.
*salt is love, salt is life*
5:00 Lüneburg is not in Schleswig Holstein but in Lower Saxony ;)
That NordVPN ad was so good I didn’t skip
Cool skit bro
I was about to throw a fit when you started talking about Spain lmao
Chubbyemu reference?
What font are you using in this video?
5:16 I swear i've heard that "Ill do it said (insert noun)"... just where?
Salt history is one of my weirdest of special interests xD Its just such a cool history of an absolute necessity
Gotta be the one to mention that roadside salt is typically magnesium chloride. More ions -> lower freezing point and more bang for your buck.
Godlike ad read
Can you make a video about the portuguese empire I feel like the history of portugal is super underrated
The connection made between "wich" as in Northwich, Middlewich etc.. and salt is intriguing, But there is a more direct and better connection. .
Remember Bois , Emia means presence in blood.
An American immigrant living in Germany made a Chubbyemu reference. This is what happened to his comment section.

Great stuff! I especially liked India-pendance :-)
you forgot about Wieliczka salt mine in poland which is on UNESCO list
I don't think it's entirely fair to say he "forgot" it, as it is impossible to put everything in such short video, but I also hoped that Wieliczka would be mentioned.
Is that age of empire 2 music
