In over 10 years of daily commuting I would not be without a Busch and Muller (aka B&M) 60mm diameter Cycle Star mirror in my bar end. Optical quality is beyond any of the cheap plastic lenses. Luckily we ride on the left here in UK so leaning my bike for those drivetrain pictures is not a problem!! For mudguards/fenders my Portland Design Works are still rattle free and smart after at least 30,000 miles

The problem with bar end mirrors is the you set them for one position, but then useless in others. I've always preferred helmet mirrors. Plus, they make you look super cool.

These are fenders of proper length! I remember my first winter of commuting on hardtail with short front fender, which I extended with a contraption made of of large plastic bottle cut in half - curvature made it rigid. Boys I felt like a weirdo riding through town but dry legs convinced me.

Remember those days of tire tubes? Well an old tire tube makes excellent insulation stripping anywhere. That rack on the fender rattle instantly made me think of a strip of old inner tube right in that spot lol.

I bought a set of the VO wavy fenders in noir when I did the 650b conversion on my Salsa La Cruz. Getting them where I wanted when the bike was designed around narrower 700c tires is took a bit of work, but they have been rock solid on all surfaces so far.

I went for the same version of the Gilles Berthoud mirror..😃 yes it's expensive! But it's like jewellery for your bike. 🥳
I used the Cateye BM-45 for a long time which was pretty good. I think it actually has slightly larger viewing surface but would bump out of place on really rough stuff. Maybe grip paste would've helped, don't know. 🤔 Truly wouldn't want to be without a mirror now, especially with wind in the ears sometimes I just can't hear cars approaching from behind and craning the neck to peer behind every 10 seconds is a pain! 😃 Cheers. 👍

I've got my Take-a-Look permanently attached to the visor on my helmet, which I have been using for several years now. It took some bending and ingenuity, but the mirror is always in a predictible spot allowing a quick and precise glimpse without looking away from the path ahead, does not destroy my glasses, is smaller and much, much less expensive. Plus, I believe they are made in usa, which makes me happy :) When mirrors are attached to the bike I find myself searching for the mirror then turning my handlebars to look for stuff; not practical for me!

I've had the same cheapo helmet mirror for like 6 years at least now. Inspired by my tollway iPass, I just attach it to my helmets with some Scotch Extreme Interlocking Fastener tape. I also use some squares on top of my helmets for mounting lights for winter / night riding. I like that if I get in a wreck the light will break off the helmet vs. getting caught on stuff. Has saved me numerous times on overhead branches, etc.

I'm not sure whether you've done a video about this. I'll have to look through your library of videos but, I am curious how you clean your bikes when it gets cold outside. I know this is one reason why I like fenders (mudguards) on my bike. Since I have to clean my bike inside my apartment during the winter months. The fenders makes cleaning my bike a lot less messy.

I used the Gilles Berthoud mirror for a bit but was not pleased with the size. I found the B&M Cycle Star 901 from Peter White to be a larger, option with an excellent glass mirror. It's body is plastic. But I've had no problems with vibration movement and it is large enough to be useful to me.

    • @MelvinHughesatp
      @MelvinHughesatp 2 года назад

@@philso7872 Both mirrors are easy to bump (for me) wheeling them through doorways and such. But as Russ said, the smaller GB is pretty firm. The larger B&M can be bumped out of place but not nearly so easily as anything else I've used that just has the plastic ball and socket. Another down side of bar-end mirrors on drop bars is that they seem determined to collide with the top tube of the bike. I usually carry a frame pump with a retaining strap and place the strap in the "mirror-strike-zone." But all in all, like Russ, I find the utility of an excellent glass mirror fixed to the handlebars infinitely better than dangling from my helmet! Rivendell sometimes sells what they call a "German" mirror that clamps around the handlebars. It is an unusual, long shape with a mirror that places things further away than they are. But it too can be clamped on a drop bar bike. My main complaints with it are its somewhat distorted view and the longer extension of the mirror from the handlebars. I always seem to be able to knock it out of place. But there again, it is still much more functional for me than a helmet mirror.

I had 2 of those mirrors. They work great, but after a 30 miles into a gravel ride, I look down and the mirror is gone, just the part the goes into the handlebars was all that was left. Wrote it off to operator error, but the exact same thing happened with the other one. Yes I lay my bike down, and was doing some b-roads, but you would think for the price the set screw would keep it together if it was bump or hit something, apparently not. Learned my lesson with the super cashy mirror.

I love my Trek 520 with fenders. Although I am from Germany I prefer Pelago fenders from Finland because of their design (Aluminium, externally mounted). SKS and their internally mounting of the stays sucks! It decreases tire clearance and catches mud and other thinks until blocking the wheel. And finally the water stalls from the inside. With one word: bad construction!

for what it's worth, I've used the same Take-a-Look mirror for about ten years, but mounted on the side of my helmet sun visor. The three "clip" mounting system works great, and I've added a bit of duct tape to keep it more secure for when helmet is in car etc off my head. Works flawlessly, but does require a helmet visor with a narrow section at the side that you can slide the three mounting things onto. I've tried numerous mirrors over the decades, and the Take a Look is the most useful, safest and best view of rear coming traffic, and for those of us with numerous bikes, just plain handy because it is always there. I'm a tourer who has gone through many countries over the decades and a daily commuter in a large city, and would not ride without one--the ease of getting a quick heads up and flat view mirror (no wide angle distortion=easier distance assessment) puts this mirror way up there on the safety and convenience side of things.

@@philso7872 , no not usually. I generally am careful how I put my helmet in places, and if it gets moved a bit, it takes 1 second to reposition it when I get on the bike and see that it's off a bit. Mine always holds it's position, ie it's not floppy and loose, so really it's never bugged me at all.
Didn't mention but the other two major advantages to helmet mounted mirrors are that you can still see easily when out of saddle , and also in mid turn, with just a little turn of the head, you can see cars coming into the curve behind you. This ability to change your viewing angle with a slight head turn is really really useful.

It's a trade off - dome shape makes objects appear smaller and harder to recognize, but completely flat on a mirror this small means getting a view from multiple positions is tough. One can dream... Russ I notice you wear your glasses on the inside of your helmet strap. I reached the age where I need readers and will have to invest in prescription cycling glasses. I always were MTB or road cycling glasses, mudd happens. Could you do a review on safety stuff that us city dwellers need like cycling glasses pros/cons(in or outside wear of the helmet strap), more mirror reviews and thoughts on wheel lights....
I used to think "mannin up and dealing" with a soggy wet butt made me a real cyclist. I think this year I will ask Santa to bring me some sort of derriere protection device. 30s here and rain in the forecast, not doing it this year.

Also get a mudflap, i bought the overpriced Vo one but you can easely make your own Out of rubber gasket material . I riveted Mine to the fenders fir a cleaner Look but screws Work of course.
Its amazing how much of a differece a front mudflap makes For your feet and drivetrain.

No paranoia judgment here. Bears are really freaking freaky. Scare the living daylights out of me.
Like moose, Canadian geese, and Australian magpies. Really scary!

You ride a very nice gravel bike there! Can the mudguards/fenders or the complete bike also be bought in Europe? How expensive was your bike? Thanks and greetings from Berlin Andreas🚴🏽‍♀️👌💯

I have been completely disappointed with mirror options for cycling and have ridden without one for a long time. Even with the expense of thos one I still think I will be giving it a try

Interested in a mirror like this for errands around town, would you prefer this type over a helmet mirror? Good to see you out riding👍

There are roads that I don't take because I know there are unleashed dogs, I can't imagine riding where there might be bears!

in 2032 you'll be able to fasten your iphone 19 to the back of your helmet and use a neural link connection into your brain to have visual imagery and lidar supported depth sensing to the rear of you. There may even be lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking integrated into the neural link suite of tools.

I'm interested in waxing my chains but I don't know whether it would survive a 3ft deep floods and some heavy tropical rains or nah

I was most interested in the chain wax part, to keep chain almost clean in rainy or muddy situations. Does it keep it dry when it is raining also ? What is the reference ?

If you can't see enough details right away, there is no point of the mirror. Might as well look back.
    Link for the seat-support rack?

Only details needed is : is there a car back and is it moving over for a safe overtake. I have stopped countless deliberate close passes by turning around to eyeball drivers who I am sure were about to close pass. This takes their element of surprise away and they pass by at a legal distance. (1m-1.5m in Auatralia.). Have gone from multiple close passes per ride to zero in 12months.

@@2321brendan for safety, it's better to compromise on aesthetics and aerodynamics and go for larger 3 inch diameter display on the handlebar...
