Disregard this joke of a guy.
I mean, I think they are too different to really compare - old Jumanji is a family action adventure, new Jumanji is an action comedy. But I get why this one resonates with some people more, it gets into some pretty deep places and can be genuinely scary in a way the new ones aren't. Plus, I mean, Robin Williams.
I saw this movie when it came out (I was 8) and rewatched it a few years ago with my wife who never saw it. I never noticed until I saw a meme on Facebook this year that it was the same actor. The dude has great range.
Also, interestingly, the fact that Van Pelt and Mr. Parrish are played by the same actor mirrors a similar plot device used in stage productions of Peter Pan, where Hook and Mr. Darling are played by the same actor, which is particularly funny since Robin Williams played Peter Pan in Hook before this film.
Connections to the sequels: - When Alan and Sarah dropped the game in the river, it DID get found by someone else - specifically Alex's father in 1996, which we see in the first scene of Welcome to the Jungle. Alex is essentially the Alan of the sequel films. - As some have pointed out, Alan Parrish's name is mentioned by Alex Vreeke in the treehouse, implying that the treehouse was built by Alan when he was trapped there for 26 years and that the jungle he was trapped in is the same jungle we see in the sequels. - Aunt Nora is the same character who takes over Eddie's restaurant in The Next Level, just in the alternate timeline where Alan never disappeared. They are played by the same actress. - The hunter, Van Pelt, shares a name with the villain of Welcome to the Jungle, though they are not played by the same actor and have very different skillsets. - Spencer and Alan share the same line about the game: "A game for those who seek to find a way to leave their world behind" - That sequel hook to Next Level? Basically says if we ever get a third one it might be a lot like the original Jumanji film.
its the same but also not. the game changed to video game format and my bet is the environment and difficulty settings changed with it. Like he looked genuinely traumatized and shit from his time there. the new jumanji movies have a completely different vibe and i believe that was intentional to indicate it is not exactly the same experience alan had but remnants of the old lasted like his treehouse.

The issue with the new ones (and every other sort of remake including Jurassic world series) is that they miss the point. This isn't just a film about a magic board game. That's the superficial plot. But it's really about family and reconciliation. Much like how Jurassic park isn't about a dinosaur park. That's just the vehicle through which the themes of hubris, ethics in science, and playing god are explored. The remakes and newer sequels miss that and just copy/continue the superficial plot so they have no heart
In the case of Jumanji, I'm not sure they were trying to copy the superficial plot without considering deep themes, I think they just used the board game plot as inspiration for a different kind of story, because they knew they couldn't recreate the magic of this one and decided to just go in a different direction instead. I do think they all deal with the theme of reconciliation, though. It's just not as deep when the sequels deal with a reconciliation between friends while this one deals with a reconciliation between father and son.
That's so cute you thought Alan was trapped in the game, and was still a kid. I knew you'd be fun with this. Robin and Bonnie Hunt were great. The whole cast was.
Great reaction! Yes the dad and Van Pelt are played by the same actor, it's an homage to Peter Pan stage plays where theatre tradition has the actor who plays Mr. Darling also play Captain Hook!
Just to help out with your Spiderman joke I should say that the girl in the movie is Kirsten Dunst the who plays Mary Jane Watson in the original Spiderman trilogy.
HOLYYYYY MOLYYYY! i've NEVER noticed the hunter is the dad! makes so much sense that's the main villain. Maybe the game is the manifestation of their worst nightmares.
I love the fact the new ones are follow ons and not remakes. When Alex takes them back to where he has been staying when they first meet him, he says the place was built by Alan Parrish and shows his name carved into the wood.
Yes, the dad and Van Pelt are both played by the same actor, it's good how you caught on to that! This movie was better than the sequels, I remember seeing it as a child and being so amazed!
In the newer Jumanji, when you get to the Jonas-margarita-hut you can see Allan's name in the post. Remember the Jonas brother said it was there when he arrived?
@Seb.... if you remember the aunt talking to the realtor in the beginning of the movie after Judy had lied to her. Remember how she said "they were very devoted parents it was a car crash in Canada"?
The parents hadn't gone on the skiing trip yet! Alan and Sarah are married and expecting their first child. Alan's parents are still alive, and Alan is now successfully running the family business. Alan and Sarah meet Judy, Peter, and their parents, Jim and Martha, for the first time during a Christmas party. Alan offers Jim a job and convinces them to cancel their upcoming ski trip, averting their deaths!
According to Van Allsburg, the name Jumanji is a Zulu word meaning "many effects," referring to "the exciting consequences of the game," which includes the unleashing of wild monkeys, untamed tigers and huge spiders into the world.
Having watched this movie in theaters I was completely surprised when I realized that the man that plays Allen's father is also the same man that played the Hunter
This was always the best one IMO, it had class, good laughs, intrigue, adventure and even a bit or romance from 2 wreaked lives that were patched up by a board game before they even began.
A true classic. The performances are amazing, I love that they made so much of the effects practical, and there really isn't a wasted moment in it. Super happy you recognized how iconic it is so early on and so, so glad you enjoyed it overall!
5:28 that's the same phrase Spencer (the skinny one) read when he started the game in the sequel Plus, if you remember Alan was the one who created that house in the jungle in which Nick Jonas' character was living
You mention that they (Alan and Sarah) still have the brains of adults. But they specifically said that they were forgetting what it was like to be an adult, even if they remembered each other and the events.
I've seen several reactors not catch that the dad and Van Pelt were the same person until they see the dad again at the end. A couple have missed it completely, until commenters pointed it out.
This movie has a very different tone from the newer ones. This was more of a thriller/scary film for children, whereas the new movies play everything for comedy.

I met the late Robin Williams several times over the years and I had always found him to be very kind and generous. I miss him so much, and I love this one.
Couple of years ago, I found my 12 year old niece watching the new one on TV, just barely laughing or reacting to the action. I casually asked her if she'd watched the first one and she obviously replied NO. Made her watch the original the next day and I actually caught her jumping scared at her seat a few times. I remember her gasping when Kirsten gets hit with the poison darts. The new ones just don't make you feel that way.
This Jumanji is certainly more scarier even if its obvious the creatures are mechanic or stuffed animals. The sequels failed at the fear part, having multiple lives you can kinda waste isnt scary. Living one life and having to survive all that is terrifying. Loved your reaction and good catch on the hunter being the dad.
To think that both the director of Jumanji and the director of Zathura would later go on to make Captain America and Iron Man in the MCU is quite the accomplishment. Zathura!!! Yes!! This movie and Zathura were the GOATS of my child hood. Like the next level up from the more baby friendly Disney movies but keeping that feel
Alan disappearing scene at the start is probably the most haunting thing in a family movie imo. The comedy style of the newer ones are so different but still pretty funny, but they don't touch this in terms of quality. Robin Williams was in so many good movies but honestly the family movies were the best. I grew up on them. But seriously, watch Death to Smoochie if you haven't. That "NOOOOO!" at the end to their parents is such a good delivery.
2:01 I never thought a British lad would forget Jack the Ripper. Surprisingly though, the only reason I was introduced to the name is because of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance through Raiden's character, and then figured out a lot of Japanese media includes Jack the Ripper for some reason lol.
This will forever be my JUMANJI : I hated the other “Jumanji” films all they had to do was name them something else. RIP : R.W. we all miss you. I still have my VHS 📼 of this
Given the supernatural nature of Jumanji, it would be pretty easy to imagine that it takes new shape every decade or so to entice new people, so the new films could theoretically be in the same universe.
"I think certain houses are too big." Dude I help with cleaning the outside or painting the inside.... some of these buildings are considered "houses" but these things are CASTLES! They are huge!
This movie was one of my favourites growing up. I’m sure if I went back to my parents I’d find the video tape somewhere. Holds up pretty well even today
All the Jumanjis are great, but yeah, the first one is special... The animated series (about the 26 years Alan spends in the jungle) was soooo good too:
It doesn't really matter if you watch this one last, the only reference to the other films is that the "tree house" Alex stayed in was the one Alan (from this film) lived in. Oh and the aunt Nora is the same Nora that owns the restaurant in the newer films, played by the same actress
7:05 - if you need something cheesy, for kids and family, and a little bit spooky this october: casper (1995). small family with big house: a theme that hit its peak before the Great Recession (i.e.: this and other 90s films and TV shows have massive homes featured everywhere).

Underrated movie, but u should watch Zathura, it’s a similar concept to jumanji, highly recommend Seb!
This movie always scared me growing up but looking back on it it’s such an iconic movie!
I'm so glad this was the only Jumaji when I was a little kid, and so I watched it all the time
2:01 I never thought a British lad would forget Jack the Ripper. Surprisingly though, the only reason I was introduced to the name is because of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance through Raiden's character, and then figured out a lot of Japanese media includes Jack the Ripper for some reason lol.
One of my favorite childhood movies.
Yesss's !!!!! This Is The Movie
We Alll' Look's For
We Really Love' It
I remember seeing this in theaters and was blown away by the FX as a little kid from the lion to the stampede
A classic, nostalgic movie! These effects were better than Ant Man Quantumania 🥴 thank you for the trip down memory lane Seb!
I remember watching this movie with my dad when I was 10 and thinking it’s a horror movie
Most people don't realize that the huntsman is a mirror of his father to the extreme(same actor too!). He constantly calls Allan a coward.
I love this movie it makes me cry laugh I feel really good I love the ending of them saving the children's parents 💖✨
This will forever be my JUMANJI : I hated the other “Jumanji” films all they had to do was name them something else. RIP : R.W. we all miss you. I still have my VHS 📼 of this
10:10 - Monkologist: A devoted fan of American pianist, composer, jazz music legend, Thelonious Monk.(October 10, 1917 - February 17, 1982)
Given the supernatural nature of Jumanji, it would be pretty easy to imagine that it takes new shape every decade or so to entice new people, so the new films could theoretically be in the same universe.
"I think certain houses are too big."
Dude I help with cleaning the outside or painting the inside.... some of these buildings are considered "houses" but these things are CASTLES! They are huge!
I love Seb’s comment on the Peter and Mary Jane part 🤣 never even thought about it
This movie was one of my favourites growing up. I’m sure if I went back to my parents I’d find the video tape somewhere. Holds up pretty well even today
Peter's big sister Judy is played by Kirsten Dunst. Fun fact: she DID play Mary Jane with Tobey McGuire in the early 2000 Spiderman films 😁
childhood movie right here RIP to a legend
Classic ✨️
Keep up the awesome work 🤩
All the Jumanjis are great, but yeah, the first one is special... The animated series (about the 26 years Alan spends in the jungle) was soooo good too:
It doesn't really matter if you watch this one last, the only reference to the other films is that the "tree house" Alex stayed in was the one Alan (from this film) lived in. Oh and the aunt Nora is the same Nora that owns the restaurant in the newer films, played by the same actress
i just realized Van Pelt the hunter who terrorizes Allan in the cartoons is played by the same actor who plays Allan's father
7:05 - if you need something cheesy, for kids and family, and a little bit spooky this october: casper (1995). small family with big house: a theme that hit its peak before the Great Recession (i.e.: this and other 90s films and TV shows have massive homes featured everywhere).
Thanks. You are fun to watch for this film!
21:47 That my friends is a Daewoo USAS-12 Automatic Shotgun based on thr AA-12 Assault Shotgun.
One of my all time fav movies, thank u
Go back and watch the new ones again! Now that you’ve seen this one you might feel a little more of that anxiety/scaredness you felt with this one!
