Aurora live video (real-time, true colors) - the Northern lights

  • This is live video of the Aurora Borealis, shot in Iceland of February 2014, showing how it actually looks like. It was a medium solar storm (about kp 5 or 6). To describe it, the aurora looks like a strangely-shaped cloud at night. The video footage here still shows it greener than it actually looks (even though there has been no processing), but the color I saw was just a tint of green or red. As it strengthens, the shapes change more quickly(like a slowly-moving cloud), and sometimes you'll see flashing bands. Sometimes it just looks like a haze, although I took most delight in seeing the odd shapes it would carve in the night sky.
    Shot with a Nikon D800 and 24mm f/1.4 G lens.
