Née en 1932, Yandé Codou Sène est issue d'une grande famille de chanteurs (sa mère, Amajigeen, était une référence en la matière.) Elle fut dès son enfance formée au chant par sa mère. Son immense talent fut découvert lors d'une fête de circoncision alors qu'elle avait quinze ans. Pendant sa campagne électorale, Léopold Sedar Senghor remarqua Yandé Codou Sène à Gossas et fit appel à elle pour qu'elle chante, accompagnée de son choeur et de ses tambours, juste avant qu'il prononce ses discours. Elle seule avait le droit d'interrompre les discours de Senghor pour entonner spontanément un de ses légendaires chants de louanges.
Elle a été, d'une certaine manière, re-découverte par Youssou Ndour,Wasis Diop et Baaba Maal avec qui elle a collaboré et enregistré.
Yandé Codou Sène est considérée comme l'une des plus belles voix du Sénégal. Sa manière de chanter, polyphonique, à capella, est unique en son genre, à la fois traditionnelle et intemporelle, universelle, touchant tout le monde, Africains ou non, par son timbre extraordinaire et son respect du patrimoine.
