Yep adding more non-heated oil will bring the temp down. Esp if the burning oil if the stove is turned off. Water does not do anything good, because you cannot mix water and oil easily
There's a girl who threw water into an oil fire and the resulting explosion melted her face off. She survived her injuries though of course she will never look the same. Kudos to her she's still happily living her life. Thanks so much for this vlog, a lot of people's knee jerk reaction to puttimg out fires is with water.
You to be clear this works in a wok due to the low amount of oil it the oil you add decreases the heat a lot removing 1 element of the fire triangle, this won’t work if you’re deep frying something. In that case, turn off the source of heat and cover the fire with a fireblanket ideally, if you don’t have one then use a pot lid or another pan if big enough, this removes oxygen from the triangle.
Right now, a steel pan in my kitchen with oil heating to make Nachos has caught fire and blowing on to blow it out, isn't helping, I'm actually close to calling 999 but what I've done is cover it with a fire blanket and using a fan to move the smoke out the room. Sadly when I've uncovered the blanket it catches again. Lucky I'm very calm and giving it longer to cool should stop things and I have a fire extinguisher from my car ready. Everyone reading this needs to own a fire blanket and fire extinguisher.
him: "how do u check if it's hot" me: "idk, put ya finger on it, like a dumb dumb?" him: "wait till there's white smoke" me: "oh... well, didn't need all my 10 fingers anyways"
Explain it next time for the kids or smth. When adding more oil you decrease the overall temperature of the oil, making it not want to evaporate. If it doesn’t evaporate it wont burn. Only the fumes burn.
@TheeliteMMA-ms4vz Do not add any liquid to an oil fire including oil. It's not a hard concept to grasps could lead to ignition, splashes, spreads, secondary combustion. You cut off the heat and smother it. Listening to tiktoks and shorts is going to get people killed.
Orrrrr you could just perhaps use baking soda or an extinguisher that’s sitting around because your average human under that circumstance would not think to add what’s literally on fire to the fire lol
Note: Add more oil than you started with to bring the temperature down quicker and dump it into a can of paper towels (for absorption and not down the drain). Water can only be used for small grill flares. If it’s a big pot of oil, dump salt or baking soda in it to smother. Source: I run my family’s Thai restaurant and always deal with fires when training new employees.
If it is a bad grease fire, use baking soda, salt, flour or a fire extinguisher. Cutting off the oxygen with a pan would work too. Also, knowing how to cook could help prevent grease fires. I’ve cooked many meals and have never started a grease fire! Happy John Dallas? 😂 I edited it for you.
Well it comes from the breath. "fire comes from the breath not the muscles" that's what he told zuko. Also the same reason why Jeong Jeong the deserter had Aang master breathing first before letting him make any fire.
My man I just had a stainless steel pan catch on fire and I remembered this video an put it out. Thank you so much I had to come back and comment my thanks. You seriously saved my kitchen from burning down.
Next time just cover it with a lid. This is horrible advice for someone not trained to do it. Someone will end up spilling burning oil all over their kitchen after watching this.
Tbh you’re really supposed to just dump salt or something on it. Or cover it with a lid or a fire blanket. I can easily see “toss more oil on it” backfiring So hard on amateur cooks
For anyone wondering the reason why you have to add more oil to the wok in order to put the fire out is because that white smoke is the oil vaporizing and becoming a flammable gas and that's what's actually burning. As long as the oil stays hot enough to vaporize it's going to continue burning, but adding cold oil to it immediately cools down the oil! As long as you turn the heat off beneath the wok, adding cold oil and then blowing on it will put the fire out because there just won't be enough heat to keep the combustion going.
@@Go21place Water is heavier than oil so the water will just pass straight through. It will definitely cool the oil down but it won't put the fire out. If you dump a whole lot of water in at once it'll just splash flaming oil around your kitchen and then you'll have a serious problem.
and why don't u just cover fire with a lid? I mean I've oil on fire once and all it took was to cover wok with a glass lid. Without new oxygen the fire goes down almost immediately
@@Erikem37 Both works, as Long as you take out any elements in the fire triangle (oxygen, heat, fuel) then the fire will be extinguished, so it doesn't really matter what method you use.
@@Erikem37 Since the video is talking about a wok you can pretty much assume that most people aren't going to have a lid large enough to cover their wok
@@NearEDGE then again the wok shape allows u to easily use smaller lid. All in all the oil in flame is a small puddle at the bottom and not like whole wok filled entirely with oil. I've mentioned that I've had fire and while my wok is like 34cm at the top I used something like 26-28cm lid and it worked pretty well
isn't it just easier to put a lid on it? it prevents oxigen to get in, so it just stops burning, and it's easier for those who aren't experiencing oil fires every day...

Yeah wait is this true? And if so, is it more effective at snuffing the fire than smothering it? And I thought the most dangerous part of oil fire + WATER is because in panic people would throw a gallon of water into it quickly and it would splash oil particles still on fire everywhere. Would oil not have that same issue? If SO, I feel like that MIGHT imply that if you chose water and used it the way the lad in this video used oil; that is, a small amount slowly, that it would also be effective. Unless the effectiveness comes from the new oil mixing with the old, reducing the temperature below the flash point/combustion point while not putting it out, so then blowing at it will snuff it as it is now below the temperature required to make it catch fire.... am I right?
