Dear youtube teacher I can't thank you enough .Your method of teaching is very amazing and enjoyable as well. Mourad , an Algerian English student and an English teacher at a private school.
Great explaination, thank you Marc. Just to mention that the expression it's time sometimes is followed by infinitive ( it's time to sleep) if the meaning is that it is the right time
This is the first time that I've watched one of your videos and I'm sure that I'll keep watching them because you are really clear on your explanations. I'd like to know if it is the same to use "It's high time" instead of using "It's time" or they are different. I really appreciate if you could answer that. Greatings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I have a question regarding one of your examples you said and I quote " I wished I went to the party yesterday? but is it more common to say "I wish I had gone to the party yesterday"
Sequence of tenses doesn't follow the same rules in English as it does in Italian, Marc. I suspect that you were thinking in Italian when you came up with that sentence, but even then, it would have been "Vorrei che fossimo andati alla festa ieri." But you're allowed to make a mistake every now and then! ;-)
Thanks Marc. I understood perfectly the subjunctive verbs. You explained so well, I recommended to my partners at the English school your video. I wish you were my teacher.
Great video... thanks!! Have only one query... in wish kind of sentences... if we want to talk further about hypothetical situations. Should we you past simple sentences. e.g. I wish we were on the beach then we took beer. After that we ate something else... like this... am I right?
Dr teacher would you like to tell me. in the sentence @i have to go.I wish i could stay longer and @I hear the concert was great.I wish i could have gone. In these sentences are COULD STAY'' and '' COULD HAVE GONE'' subjunctive.thanks
Great lesson, thank you. Is it correct to say “I wish I had gone to your party yesterday”? I’ve noticed that, though grammatically incorrect, many people say if I was... and I wish I was...
Hello Marc, It was a good lesson. However, with "it´s time ..." it could be used the present tense too, but it´s considered an impolite way to speak. Is that correct? Regards
Actually, a native speaker of English would use the infinitive WITH "to"" "It's time to go." It's not that using the subjunctive is considered more polite; it's more that it's considered a bit old-fashioned. Most modern native speakers of English prefer to avoid using the subjunctive whenever possible, especially in speaking. As Marc noted, it's mainly used nowadays in certain fixed expressions and in making suggestions, orders, commands, and in expressing wishes or hypothetical (that is, contrary-to-fact) situations.
Maybe it's allowable, but one wouldn't say "It's a good idea (that) I make a lesson on the subjunctive". One would say "It'd be a good idea if I made a lesson...", or "It's a good idea that I do a lesson...", or a number of other phrasings, but "It's a good idea (that) I make a lesson on the subjunctive" does not sound quite right to me.

If you mean conditional sentences such as "If I were rich, I would travel a lot more" or "If we had gone to the party yesterday, we would have had a good time," then yes. The subjunctive is required in the "if" clause because you are talking about things that are untrue or unreal (I'm NOT rich, and we DIDN'T go to the party yesterday.). However, conditional sentences that refer to things that were true in the past or that are or may be true in either the present or the future do NOT take the subjunctive: "If she was here yesterday, I didn't see her." "If he comes to see me tomorrow, I'll ask him to help me with my project." If she's at work right now, she's much too busy for me to call her." "If he is saying that, he is wrong."
they are expressions/idioms: Heaven forbid means I hope it does not happen ! - God save the Queen ! it literally that. - Come what may ! - no matter what happens. Please share ;)
They are actually third-person commands, for which the subjunctive is required. Modern English tends to limit the subjunctive to these few set expressions, however. Normally, third-person commands or wishes are expressed with the auxiliary verbs "let" and "may": "Let him come see me when he's available." "Let them eat cake." "May she have peace and happiness all through the new year."
I like your lesson, but you have not explained very clearly WHY we use the form 'If I were you' (instead of 'If I was you'). Yes, we use it because it helps us to express the fact that we are talking about an imagined situation, but the phrase 'If I was you' is too direct for British people, so we use the more indirect form of 'If I were you' to express the fact that we are removed from reality, or one step away from it. It helps us to talk about the situation while indicating that we ourselves are actually outside that reality.
That is true. There are other lessons where I explained it in more detail. I can have a long lesson but unfortunately I need to keep lessons short. Thank you for your help
Hello, Marc. Here is my opinion is that one of your examples be correct. I think you should teach that I wished I had gone to your party yesterday, instead of teaching, I wished I went to your party yesterday. How do you think about that?
Thanks for the class,I really appreciated it. I was struggling with this subject. Thanks, greetings from Brazil!

Do three kinds of conditional sentence belong to Subjunctive, Teacher?
I would say YES but other teachers might disagree with me :) please share
