There are so many amazing persons out there with all this knowledge, crap im glad we have internet so i can find and listen to more of them :) Thanks for another interesting video, Sofilein you are amazing at finding these guys :)
@Feeds Ravens Yup. This issue provided most cars after the war being made with classic layout - front for steering, rear for the drive. This became resolved within a budget possible solution as late as the end of the 70s. It's actually the only reason FWD cars are cheaper now than the RWD ones.
@Feeds Ravens I guess it should be viewed as a continuation of the inter war german solution for a four wheel drive vehicle by having two engines, one for each pair of wheels^^
@Feeds Ravens You may call it engineering overkill, but its how all of todays heavy off road wheeled equipment is constructed. So i guess it is a winning concept, and You get what You pay for. Rommel used it himself! What its missing compared to todays vehicles are high flotation tires and adjustable tire pressure on the move. The level of tire technology till long after WWII was only good enough for light wheeled off-road vehicles. Now You know why any heavy armoured car failed more or less at the time.
@Feeds Ravens I now see You speak only about the 222 and would like to replace it by something similar to I guess an M3. I can see that and agree with You, I somehow misinterpreted Your comment. I got the M8 in mind replacing the 234. My comment was meant for a vehicle with more then 2 axles.
Steve Holmes Hilary could explain the installation of a toilet and hold your attention as you eagerly await each word. Sofi, Another great video from Hilary Doyle, the master of WWII German AFV's. The 8 rad armoured cars are really cool, especially the later ones. This is a rare bird. Thank you for bringing it to us
As usual a very interesting video on a very good Sd.Kfz 242/4! I'm a bit surprised that he forgot to mention that it was powered with the Tatra 103 V12 diesel engine with 210 hp. The Sd.Kfz. 234 variants was the first and only German armoured vehicle to use an air cooled diesel engine. It curious because it was well known the advantages of having an air-cooled engine that could be dispensed with complicated pipes and vulnerable radiators, making it more resistant to battle damage and freezing cold or heat like in Africa. Perhaps the only great disadvantage that it needed noisy power absorbing big fans. Yet the Kubelwagen never had problems both in Africa or the Russian freezing fields. Good job again 👍👍
@@mbr5742 my problem is I hear very badly, I need hearing aids so I didn't hear...! Yes Tatra did proposed powerful diesel air-cooled engines for vehicles like the Sd.Kfz 9 Famo and actually was built a few prototypes but for reasons I never understood it was never putted in production. Fundamentally the diesel engine has never gained great favour at the Wehrmacht despite knowing advantages like more efficient fuel consumption but also was less powerful....
@@paoloviti6156 They used two systems. One (Fisher-Tropp) could definitly produce lubrication oil and diesel. I have not found percentages on what products the process produced. So it might be "10 percent diesel, 70 percent petrol, 20 percent other" or it might be 40:40 or any other ratio.
German tank industry manufactured just 89 units of the Sd.Kfz.234/4 at the order of Adolf Hitler, who wanted to get more anti-tank guns into action against the increasing numbers of Allied tanks in Western Europe. Information on the Sd.Kfz.234/4 is scarce. While its Pak 40 75mm cannon made it formidable, its open top superstructure and thin armor rendered the vehicle highly vulnerable. Indeed, a number of WW2 photos appeared showing destroyed 234/4 armored cars lying on the sides of roads. Given just a small number of 234/4's, its influence on the Western Front could only have been negligible. Hitler may have had the right idea of putting more anti-tank cannons into action but choosing the Sd.Kfz.234 chassis, which was meant for reconnaissance, scouting, screening, and flank security, made the decision questionable. The best inexpensive and easy to produce German tank destroyers were the StuG III and the Hetzer. Both had thicker armor and better chances of surviving.
You’re looking at it with hindsight they wanted needed self propelled guns and that’s why it was produced. They hadn’t the luxury time or resources to produce stugs or hetzers .
Sofi & Hilary great to learn more about a rare vehicle from the master- thank you....anyone see how the current Boxer APC are related to these early 8 wheelers?
Are those the original fenders? They appear to be a simplified version of the ones I've seen before in photographs - lacking as many doors for storage boxes, and the doors themselves seem to be missing their inset latches. Whilst the exhaust mufflers at the back are incomplete - though the attachment points for them appear to be there. Some late production measures perhaps?
@@lavrentivs9891 actually it was badly repaired on some parts of the fenders. If you look at the photos of the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 you will see that it had on both sides it has panels that can be opened to store tools or whatever but most of them are being welded...
Would agree with you there. Being a Brit, the term 'fender' threw me but 'yes' I was also wondering if these were originals. But the only reason I had my doubts was a nostalgic one(!) - I fondly recall assembling the Airfix plastic kit of that vehicle when I was a kid and the mudguards (fenders) shown in that video immediately struck me as not being 'right' 8-) 8-)

I bet under combat condition it would be very hard to line that gun up for a accurate shot against a enemy tank and you sure wouldn't want to hang around too long with the thin armor and open top once shots were being exchanged, it would be suited as tank destroyer role wait in ambush in a concealed position fire off a shot or two then retreat at full speed to another concealed spot, I think I would rather have a rotating turret on my recon vehicle with maybe a dual or even a quad 20mm or 50mm semi automatic gun with its purpose not to engage in firefights with heavy opposition but lay down a cover fire to pin the enemy down while I beat a hasty retreat back to my lines
I'm always amazed after seeing some of these either in person or on a video how either small or large they actually are. Building a model of an earlier version of this make me think that was huge-- no, despite it being 8 wheels, it's not. However, when I visited a local American Legion with an impressive collection of vehicles outside, the height of an M60A3 was massive while the Abrams I found at the VTANG museum was definitely lower, sleeker and seemed smaller, even though it was not. Fascinating how we've come full circle back to 8 wheelers. Thanks for a great video again! Makes social distancing much more enjoyable.
I'd love a more detailed tour of these A.C.s. There were few of this model made. Perhaps 150 or so. The same with it's other variants. The reason being it was quite complicated to build. Yup, another piece of German engineering.
Hilary's knowledge cannot be questioned. Very well presented. His artwork is second to none also. I love his line drawings.
I like very much the Sd.Kfz. 234 variants and I find it a shame to see this very rare vehicle in sad condition otherwise a good job again as usual 👍👍
