  • I show how to use grease on the retaining clip of a new CV axle to make it easier to push into a transmission. I hope this helps!

    Here's a little tip for your viewers, it slides in much easier when you position the locking clip opening to the 12:00 position and then use a little grease, they slide right in. Make sure the surface of the transmission opening is clean, never slide that shaft in until you put some brake cleaner on a rag and wipe that area down good. The clip in the 12:00 position will stop the clip from rolling up the splines. Very important.

      @stevem3228 I've always said watching RUclips to find out how to fix something can wind up having you break something. You never ever hammer these CV axles, and if you must you can lightly hit them with a rubber mallet

      Did you notice the shaft slid into place after he rotated it, which probably located the ring gap nearer to a 12 O'clock position.

      @@willsrestorations I was just watching A1-Auto and one other video and they are both hammering them in -with a dead blow- but still... It freaks me out. Also, how does the grease not contaminate the transmission fluid? I have to be very careful on my Mercedes but here with Honda everyone is doing it and I'm thinking um ok... I guess it is ok? My Merc is a sealed closed lifetime transmission maybe that's why? I had a hell of a time changing out the seal. I finally got a 3D printed seal drive kit on Etsy and it went in a lot better. Got my seal from Honda dealership too. I also switched out the starter. That has to be the craziest thing I have ever seen on any car-Japanese, American or European. In. sane.

      You just gotta keep trying to slam it in there, it might take a while. I had to grab it with both hands and pound on it again and again. Eventually it just clicks right in. Of course once you get it in, you'll need a crowbar to get it out.

      @@Americansikkunt It might not be in all the way. There shouldn't be any space between the CV and the tranny case. Take the bolt from the old one, screw it onto the shaft backwards about half way. Hit it with a small sledge hammer. Be careful not to hit the new CV, you can bend the threads. It's a big pain if you do.

    I watched like 6 videos in how install in my Equinox 2012 this axle and no one took the time to explain this and focus the camera to appreciate the contact of the axle and transmission. After installed, and few weeks, my Equinox didn’t move backwards or forward, and had a grinding noise. The problem was the axle, damaged in the tip, next to the snap ring. I didn’t installed correctly, I didn’t push it all the way inside. Good thing it had warranty and they swap it for a new one. I thought something was wrong in my installation process and found this video. Thank you very much for sharing this tip, because I was going to install it incorrectly again!😅

    • @TheWilferch
      @TheWilferch Год назад +1

      ...hope you got the old ring out and it's not floating inside your transmission.....warranty coverage on the axle won't mean much at that point. Next time....do the grease trick but ALSO orient the clip with the open end either straight up or straight down.

  • @TheWilferch
    @TheWilferch Год назад +9

    Excellent....one more tip....besides the grease trick that tends to keep the clip centered......orient the clip such that the open-end is either straight up or straight down......but never sideways. If you don't recall the position and you are wrestling getting it "in"...push..... rotate 90 degrees......push...rotate the joint 90 degrees again.....repeat...until ( tada !)....it snaps right in !!!

  • @reallyhappenings5597
    @reallyhappenings5597 Год назад +6

    This works. Put in enough grease so the circlip "floats" even on it. That holds it co-centered with the axle for even compression and the easiest possible insertion.

    One more thing to try, the grease helps center the clip, Without the grease the clip will gang down, if the ends of the clip are down they stick out further and and cause the bind issue. Try the grease to help center and get the clip opening on the top.
    One other issue I had, when the old CV joint came out, there was no clip on it so look for that when removing. If it is not on the old one try fishing it out with a magnet. Good luck

  • @michaeldvorak5556
    @michaeldvorak5556 5 месяцев назад +7

    Tip: position ring so gap is up. This leaves the round part hanging. It will be pushed up during install to center it. If you position gap on bottom, the points of the ring made jam against the splines of mating shaft. Just saw another similar response. Im concerned about using grease. The wrong type can break down the rubber seal and I dont want a glob of grease making its way through the transmission. Does anyone have a recommendation for grease? I was considering trans assembly lube. Another concern, those splines can be sharp and cut the seal, and putting lube on the shaft will keep the seal from initially running on a dry shaft.

  • @Car1Sagan
    @Car1Sagan Год назад +3

    Yea I'm going to be doing that job for the first time tomorrow, but supposedly the grease and rotating the rotor a little bit makes it go in, and then when in all the way, the clip is supposed to snap into place inside and keep it there.

    Wait so that’s it? It just has to go all the way in like that? There’s no extra pushing that’s needed? I just did the drivers side on my Mazda cx5 and it was my first time. I haven’t moved it bc it went in pretty smoothly , obviously some fighting and wiggling but it wasn’t horrible. Every video I see says that’s it’s a nightmare to seat them in correctly and get the seal to seal properly. Is that all there is to it? So all I need to do now is top off the atf that spilled out ?

I assumed it wasnt worth the cost. Anyway I got under the car myself finally and attempted to figure it out. I pushed them back in! No wheels taken off etc. I just pushed them in. My question is. Will I need a clip to hold them there?

    • @sunilcherianpullockaran8817
      @sunilcherianpullockaran8817 Год назад +1

      Definitely, you need a circlip to hold the axle. If the clip is missing it must be attached to the magnet inside the gearbox and if it were not then your transmission would have been mince meat, with in a few minutes of driving.

      You're having a hard time because this video did not show the proper way. Make sure the opening of your clip is at the 12:00 position and that's how they slide in real easy. Doing it with the clip opening in the 6:00 position can cause serious problems like the clip rolling up the splines and this is why knowledgeable mechanics place that clip opening at 12:00 position. Also make sure the transmission opening is clean and take some brake cleaner sprayed on the rag and wipe the area around well
