My father went to prison when I was four years old and the last memory I had of him was watching the Popeye movie that starred Robin Williams. Eventually I forgot what he looked like and somehow thought he looked like Robin after watching a bunch of his movies. Years later I saw my dad again, looked nothing like the guy. Your comment reminded me of that.
For real! I almost forgot this was a scene out of a movie for a minute, I was literally entranced with everything he said. Amazing acting skills for sure.
This right here is acting. Not just memorizing lines. He uses subtle facial expressions, real emotion. You know that somewhere deep inside there was real pain. You can see it in his eyes. He wasn't just saying his lines. He truly believed it.

You can literally see the realization on Wills face when he said that. The "oh shit, he's right, knowing everything doesn't mean I know everything" Amazing acting from Damon
What's really interesting is that earlier, in the bar scene with that private school guy Clark, Will accused him of having no original thoughts on the matter--that every thought he had could have been from the library. And now, Williams' character exposes that this is also the case with Will. Awesome scene.
True indeed. Wisdom will always supersede intellectuals. Most intellectuals are arrogant (like Will is here in this scene) and prideful, which is ignorant and blind.
Williams nails this scene, but credit has to be also given to the script. This is the moment that reveals to everyone why Sean is in his own league compared to all the other psychiatrists who had tried to work with Will before him. No one else has previously seen through Will’s hard shell like Sean does, and Will is clearly totally unprepared for that. He is left speechless, and that is the painful but necessary first step towards his mental healing. It’s a brilliantly written piece, and both Williams and Damon make it an unforgettable moment.
Note that the first 3 minutes are one single take. One take of Robin Williams putting on the kind of acting that rightfully got him an Oscar for this role. Three minutes of acting perfection. RIP You beautiful man. You will always be missed.
It's prob easily the most iconic. I also love his 'I Remember' scene from Hook, and the closing interview from One Hour Photo that tells a whole origin story in three minutes.
Great actors like Williams draw from personal experience, he isn’t just reading lines, he is living the moment with experience from his own personal hardships and triumphs.
Pemz agree with you. I watched this movie ten years back, enjoyed the movie but it took me a while to understand the depth of it! When i watched it again after few years it made all sesnse and it invoked my emotions to the core! Robin Williams you genius!
Matt Damon is the actor, he is playing a character. It's called a movie. It's a story based on things people experience and go through. Not sure if you know this concept, clearly from your comment.
Agreed. Not every movie I’ve seen Matt in is awesome, but this particular scene shows he’s got the chops for acting. You can feel his disdain in the beginning and his humility in the end.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was so clever when they wrote this epic, wonderful story. And they were so young! I think this is a masterpiece of their life!
"You dont know about real loss, 'cause that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much." I think these were truly the words that broke through Will's defenses. He realizes that his past traumas have led him to live a life without meaningful connections, distanced from the world. Hands down one of the best scenes in movie history. The delivery from Robin Williams, the subtlety in Matt Damon's eyes darting back and forth with unease as he's being dissected by Sean, masterful. A timeless classic.
It's a great scene, that is for sure. I have never seen this film. Clips from the movie have been popping up in my recommendations. I am thinking about watching it.
"I don't see an intelligent, confident man. I see a cocky, scared shitless kid." This line helped me grow up. Great writing, acting, directing and production. Bravo.
This is the best scene in the whole movie. The way that Robin discusses that life should be enjoyed not by just reading book. That proved that Robin should be silly and serious in all dimensions, which is what makes his passing hard to bear. His talent will never be topped.
I love how the camera stayed on Robin for a good two minutes without cutting. The words are excellent, but the way he says them with his eyes makes it so much more powerful. One of the best actors I’ve ever seen, and one I miss even 7 years later. This is my favorite monologue I've seen in a film. Such a poignant bit of dialogue
@fuss I feel like it was intentional. The camera slowly pans to include Will, and I think it was supposed to visually show Sean's words cracking his defenses. I haven't watched the movie in a while so I don't quite remember the chronological order, but given that it started to pan when Sean was talking about love, it might be after Will met Skylar.
25 years later and I still consider this to be one of the most well written monologues in film history. No one can tell me otherwise. And Robin’s delivery, oh man.... I still refuse to believe he’s gone 😢
This film changed me when I watched for the first time 5 years ago. I was anxious and bitter at everything and everyone. I was combative and saw every slight disagreement as a battle that I just HAD to win. Thought I was more intelligent and insightful than everyone until I saw this monologue. I took his words to heart, as if he was saying them to me. I cleaned my act up, I seeked help for my anxiety and depression and turned my life around.
Same thing happen to me, I've watched this few years ago along with his other films (Patch Adams recommended by my counselor and Dead Poet Society that I discovered along the way). Until now, I am still work in progress. Hope everything works out in our lives soon.

it's more than that. Will is floored how this guy can see through the shit and still wants another round. this some Joe Campbell shit. not a fuckin TED talk.
One element I love about this scene is the way the camera slowly brings in Will at 2:16 . You get lost watching and listening to Sean, and almost forget that Will is there, and Sean is talking to you instead. Then you remember that Will is there and see that he is as motionless and still as you are. Robin Williams, you were so good and are very much missed.
But gently. That's why it's so effective. Had it been with fist swinging or a battle of wits there's no way Will would have sat there listening. It's an amazing scene.
@@stephanieellis5399 yeah he doesn’t spend the whole monologue putting Will on blast. He sneaks in there that he cares about Will and that he’s “fascinated” and “all in.”
Robin William became immortalized as one of the titans of cinema with this scene. The true genius of this scene is that it doesn't feel like he is acting. I haven't been able to watch a movie of his fully since his death because his movies truly touched me and resonated with me through my formative years. I think as an audience we were unbelievably lucky to be gifted with his talents and will always be thankful for the legacy he left.
Probably not the same Robert Wagner, but this commented reminded me of a "Rip Torn" line from the movie, "Defending Your Life". When he explains to the Albert Brooks, character, that everybody on earth uses between 2 and 5% of their brains. He goes on to explain, that if you used more than 5% of your brain, you wouldn't be happy on earth. Being a fatalist, I tend towards believing that Robin Williams' time here was just up.
But you do understand that everyone uses 100% of their brains, right? If there's a part of your brain that doesn't get used, it atrophies and you lose it. This 5% or 10% trope that hollywood loves to perpetuate is nothing but nonsense.
If Robin hadn’t had won an Oscar for this movie, nobody should ever win an Oscar. Robin, Matt and Ben; BRAVO! on creating greatness. I still tear up every time I see this scene.
Sean basically undresses Will and his whole life in a few sentences. You've never travelled, you've never truly been in love...married, vulnerable, fought a war, faced death, you've never experienced real loss. At the same time he points out what's exceptional about Will and gives him some hope that connection is possible, but you have to stop bullshitting and get real with someone.

A lot of Damon/Affleck’s screenplay set the stage for this scene, but in terms of the exact dialogue, the director, producers, actors, any advisors, and some scriptwriters all have a say and influence before they actually put it to film.
Most of Robin Williams' movies have a lot of ad-libbed lines from him, some of them were amazing, I remember reading about Aladdin and they actually animated some of his scenes around what he recorded. In this movie, the scene about his wife farting, that was ad-libbed, Matt Damon was genuinely laughing at that.
Wisdom is a derivative of intelligence. It took a level of tact to approach will with his rebuttal. Intelligence is quick with a response, but given time, wisdom will win the war.

@@carle7626 You really think so? I think there's more to it. Jack Lemmon stole the show in "Mr Roberts". And Red Buttons shocked me with his serious somber demeanor in "Sayonara". No,I think a winner for Supporting Actor deals with their overall performance in the movie.
Just pointing out, it was Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who wrote the dialogue we are listening to here. Honestly they should have stopped acting and continued writing scripts.
There are several movies that Ben Affleck was in that I thought he did a very good acting job. Argo, state of play, the town, and the accountant to name a few. I don't need every movie I watch to win an academy award for best picture. If the movie keeps my attention, I consider that good enough. Besides, I don't always like some of the best picture winners. The English patient......yawn.
Everyone talks about Robin Williams here, but how about Matt Damon subtly constricting his throat after Sean told him "you saw a painting of mine and you ripped my life apart", and then having a flash of hastily-suppressed emotions after being reminded he's an orphan.
Even with your wonderful deconstruction of this scene - you've still barely touched on the depth of the acting here. It's a marvelous example of a perfect moment on camera, with two brilliant actors showing us how to become the character and completely lose themselves in the roles. Staggering to watch these two masters play off of each other with perfection. Deeply moving - especially since the brilliant Robin Williams is gone.
3:44 "Do you think i know the first thing about how hard your life has been, how you feel, who you are, because i've read Oliver Twist?" For some reason that line always hit the hardest for me.
The Academy has messed up on numerous occasions regarding to whom they give awards, but this movie and this performance is one of the times they absolutely nailed it. Rest in Peace, Robin.
This scene reduced me to tears when I first saw it and still does over 20 years later. Robin Williams was an absolute genius and is sorely missed but what memories he has left us
When he got to the bit about loving someone... to feel so vulnerable, to know just one person could level you with one glance, feeling like god put an angel on Earth whom could rescue you from the depths of hell, just for you. Man. Hits hard.
Amazing...really amazing...When Williams says "through anything....through cancer", Damon's eyes going immediately down. He realizes in a quick second that he f^&%&%* up by disrespecting his wife days earlier. Williams is easy and in rhythm, his heart just pouring out. You can feel the weight of every word and Damon's expression (or lack of one) is brilliant. One of the best movie scenes ever.
I like how at the beginning of this scene, Will is cocky and ready to "do mock therapy" on the therapist again, but then, in the space of a single shot, the only voice and face we hear for most of it is Sean's as he points out to Will that his intellectual armor, snark, and tough attitude are just defense mechanisms he's using to keep from being truly vulnerable with another person. And then, slowly, the single shot reveals Will's face as he's suddenly speechless for the first time in the movie. He has no comeback. "You're terrified of what you might say." Sean makes Will speechless not because Sean is trying to intimidate Will in order to "win an argument," as Will did with the asshole grad student earlier. He makes Will speechless because he surprises him with genuine care for who Will is as a person and sees through all his intellectual posturing and bravado. He even acknowledges that no one can truly know the "depths" of Will, even though Will thought he could get inside Sean's head earlier.
I ask you about board games, you'll know chess, and all the best moves from Kasparov's playbook, you'll know your Sicilian from your English openings. I'll bet you've even run a few hustles at the tables in Harvard Square. But you don't know what it's like to roll the dice, only to have your body disassembled into a nightmare jungle, where every living thing is trying to kill you. To grow up and survive 26 long years in total isolation from another human being, only to return and find your parents are dead, your home is gone and your entire town impoverished by the ramifications of your disappearance.
While I agree. That's my issue with the scene. Is Damon's character cocky? Yes. However, he's like 20, and his age is out of his control. The only people who enjoy that kind of retort are people who are old but still not emotionally mature enough to understand he's just a kid. Blasting him for his age and lack of experience is frankly immature and our of touch with the fact that he was Damon's age once, but that's just me.
@@andrewpestotnik5495 I agree, the older generations fail to realize that age isn't directly related to intelligence or maturity. Sure, you learn more as you get older. Some never do. The older can learn from the young just as much vice versa.
Yes, I'm sure many boomers like yourself watch with smug satisfaction, but I'm gonna bust your delusions chief, the lines that are in this movie, the ones you no doubt sing high praises to? All written by Damon and Affleck, the two young bucks whose opinions you'd dismiss without a second thought. One of the biggest delusions people live under is that with age comes automatic wisdom, but no, there are plenty of stupid old people who don't have a clue of what they're talking about, the reason people like you think that is because wisdom comes from experiences, not age, now it just so happens when your older your are likely to have experiences that give you wisdom, but don't kid yourself, plenty of people live and die and never learn anything from their experiences, and they go throughout their lives living the fool making the same mistakes, over and over again. Tl;Dr Age and wisdom do correlate, but the former does not cause the latter.
@@andrewpestotnik5495Because that’s not the point of the scene. The scene is setup by Will going to other Dr’s, and doing whatever possible to avoid talking about himself. It’s letting Will know that his offensive tactic won’t work. It’s not about shame, it’s about confrontation, and cutting through the bullshit.
Brilliant: Sean used the same tactic that Will used on him in order to try and push Sean away. But the difference is that Sean used it in order to show his own vulnerability - sharing personal things about himself (making the first move in order to establish trust) while simultaneously letting him that, "Yeah, you ain't gettin rid of me THAT easily" when he ends by saying, "Your move, chief." We applaud Robin Williams acting and execution of this scene, and rightfully so. However I think we often forget that this story/script was written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon when they were around the ages of "25". To have that kinda incite at that age in order to write something so moving is also a testament to their own talent. I LOVE this movie.

My father went to prison when I was four years old and the last memory I had of him was watching the Popeye movie that starred Robin Williams. Eventually I forgot what he looked like and somehow thought he looked like Robin after watching a bunch of his movies.

What's really interesting is that earlier, in the bar scene with that private school guy Clark, Will accused him of having no original thoughts on the matter--that every thought he had could have been from the library. And now, Williams' character exposes that this is also the case with Will. Awesome scene.

The only weapon more powerful than genius: Wisdom.
Actual experience..
Pat Gogan a.k.a wisdom...
True indeed. Wisdom will always supersede intellectuals. Most intellectuals are arrogant (like Will is here in this scene) and prideful, which is ignorant and blind.
Sex appeal more powerful than wisdom or intelligence. Hulk Hogan lacks both, and look at him.
All wisdom is fear of the Lord.

@@Akshobhyaharikiranabangonr That's why they said "this performance is one of the times they absolutely nailed it."
One of the best films I’ve ever seen. Robin Williams was perfect for this role.
Absolutely. As a matter of fact, I think he's one of the more underrated actors in the business.
This scene reduced me to tears when I first saw it and still does over 20 years later. Robin Williams was an absolute genius and is sorely missed but what memories he has left us
One of the most touching movie scenes of all time.
Jumanji was better
"the terms visiting hours do not apply" so wise.
When he got to the bit about loving someone... to feel so vulnerable, to know just one person could level you with one glance, feeling like god put an angel on Earth whom could rescue you from the depths of hell, just for you. Man. Hits hard.
Just amazing. Never gets old.
"I'm fascinated. I'm in." Perfection. Sublime teaching.
I’m in. Will needed that his whole life. Someone that is telling him to his face that he won’t bail
Look at the Hudson plane pictures of fuselage it look like I'm standing there.
Seen the CIA Grey planes and Al of them from 911at a Airport in Florida.
"You're terrified of what you might say."
Sean makes Will speechless not because Sean is trying to intimidate Will in order to "win an argument," as Will did with the asshole grad student earlier. He makes Will speechless because he surprises him with genuine care for who Will is as a person and sees through all his intellectual posturing and bravado. He even acknowledges that no one can truly know the "depths" of Will, even though Will thought he could get inside Sean's head earlier.
Exactly. He's simply saying, "I see you" and Will is left speechless.
“You’ve never been stuck in a board game for 26 years.”
Edit: I have no clue how this got so many likes. Thanks, lads!
To grow up and survive 26 long years in total isolation from another human being, only to return and find your parents are dead, your home is gone and your entire town impoverished by the ramifications of your disappearance.
lmao

Sounds like Settlers of Catan, takes forever
Doesn’t get better than this. He’s essentially saying, “I don’t care how smart you are. You’re just a kid and don’t know sh*t.”
Excellent take on this AMAZING scene...
...You're just a kid, you havent experienced SHIT. Life can't be learned from a book... it has to be lived...
I've watched this over 30 times and I still get chills. Brilliant writing and amazing delivery. We miss you Robin.
You and me, babe. What a fabulous, brilliant knockout it was. Still is. Robin always walked on water; I loved finding out they did too. I’ll love watching them until I die.. Liz Davies from Aus
A beautiful monologue.
