    This is pretty much HOW to clean your filter, on or not on, a budget. Tip: Run three or four filters in a queue. Clean them all up in the Mineral Solvent and then wash them all together. Saves on solvent and time. Oil them all and store 'em a handy zip-lock ready for use. This way you are bulk-actioning the process and giving those filters time to mature and settle.
    Oh and if you filter that solvent through some cloth or even a Coffee filter in a funnel (as he hints at the end), and pour it back into the can for next time, it will last you a season of riding - now THAT is the "budget" part!
    Oh and another tip - use a filter "skin" to make this whole task way easier. Those things hold most of the dirt when you peel 'em off.

    Good video. Only thing I disagree with is the warm water idea... if the solvent didn't effect the glue the warm water will never do it.

    I used Dawn on my dirt bike air filter and it turned into a baby duck and died! Then I sprayed a little uni and once a little K&N filter oil inside and out a little on the edges then let it sit in the sun for twenty thirty minutes and that oil didn't spread it s way evenly throughout the foam filter at all. Houston we got a problem!

    I’m not a racer i just ride my 2 stroke around like a bicycle sometimes may get up to speed rev it up and a couple weak wheelies even tear through hills and grass. But I don’t think that’s very hard riding. How often do you suggest cleaning and oiling the air filter?

      Just when it gets dirty, use common sense. Dirty air filters cause the top end to wear faster because it will causes a restriction on the air flow which puts more strain on the rings and other top end components.

      The foam filter on a can am atv is smaller than this dudes' filter but it cleans beautifully with just the use of Palmolive dish detergent. The dish detergent takes out both the oil in the foam filter and the embedded dirt. I do use warm water though, it does a better job on getting rid of the oil. I think it is important to not wring out the liquid in the filter but to squeeze it out.

    I only wish I could get two races or even rides out of a filter. Looks worst that some times after a single ride (not even a race). Can get a bit dusty here. So, once the thinner gets all thick with the oil what do you do with it. Disposal of the thinner + nasty oil? I use naphtha instead of thinner and after a while it gets all nasty with oil and thick with blue goop (oil). After a while it gets so thick it will hardly pour though a old T-shirt. I do like you and leave much sediment in the bottom of the bucket before putting it back in the can. I hate thinner and it gives a serious headache. Could sniff naphtha all day with no issues.... It works well and you still get it at most hardware stores.

      my 2006 ktm has a bunch of gaps toward the rear wheel, that causes the air filter to get dirty quickly since all the fine dust and stuff gets gets thrown up by the rear wheel and sucked through the gaps. close those gaps and your filter should last longer.

    Does soap do a really good job of cleaning the air filter ? I know a lot of people who use just standard air filter cleaner but I’m too lazy. Just want to clarify before I try anything on my 2013 kx450f

    • @startracing9062
      @startracing9062  4 года назад +1

      Yes, liquid dish is a must. Without it it will not come clean. Soap is a degreaser which will help remove the mineral spirits or paint thinner from the air filter. Try it out, you will see.

    • @jeffnelson21231212
      @jeffnelson21231212 7 лет назад +1

      No its not, I put over 50hrs on my bike from racing hare scrambles each year
      so i replace the air filter every year. It's nice too because i have a couple of extra filters laying around in case i have a 2 day event and i trash the filter on the first day.

    • @josephkrause5290
      @josephkrause5290 7 лет назад

      oh ok. that makes sense, but I was just looking online and I saw a top of the line oil filter. the brand was pro filter. it was already oiled, so all you have to do is install it. isn't it a better deal to get a new air filter everything for 9 bucks vs spending 10 on mineral spirits? what's ur opinion?

    • @startracing9062
      @startracing9062  7 лет назад

      I buy mine from Twin Air already oiled but..... after a couple of rides or even 1 ride the air filter will become dirty with dirt, sand, ect.... and it has to been cleaned. Most of the time I have to clean it after a hare scramble race because here in Illinois we race through mud, creeks and sandy areas and it will clog up an air filter. So it just depends on how often you have to clean it but it has to be cleaned multiply times over the course of a riding season. A dirty air filter cause a motor's piston or top end to wear faster, not to mention a loose in power.

    • @josephkrause5290
      @josephkrause5290 7 лет назад

      my point is.... this is just a question. why would u spend $10 dollars, plus I think it's $8 dollars with of air filter oil if u could just replace it. let's says after a race u need to clean it, instead of spending the $18, why wouldn't u just dump it and get a new one for $9?

    • @startracing9062
      @startracing9062  7 лет назад

      well a pre oiled air filter is around $25. I am sure you can buy a cheap air filter for $9 but good luck with that.

      The paint thinner takes the oil out instantly. You don’t have to soak it like that though. You can just pour a little bit onto the filter and ring it out.

  • @pedalen
    @pedalen 4 года назад +1

    Dude, you really should invest in a halfmask, like a 3M 4251, breething thinner is no good at all. Even worse is if you wash your hands with it, then you get it in the blood immediately, and up to your brain it goes. Said halfmask is pretty useless if you have a beard or stach though, airgaps. You said it yourself, better to be safe than sorry. But if you really like bieber, i guess the damage is done already 🤣

      Dish soap doesn’t get all the oil out of the filter the way paint thinner does. You don’t have to submerge the whole thing in pain thinner. All you Gotta do is pour a little bit of paint thinner on the filter and then ring it out. You only need a few ounces of paint thinner to do it
