Thanks for visiting Model Rockets 321. This channel will bring you all sorts of Model rocket videos.
Cool channel! I had a Red Max in the mid 80’s… lots of fun! Just ordered one to build and fly with my grand daughter.
My stepdaughter asked me what I did when I was a kid, model rockets was one of the activities. She said she’d like to se one fly, this was my go to model. She loved it.
Would love to see you fly it!!
Subscribed.
Check the videos flown it many times, we'll a few times.
Best Rocket Ever. You need to build it from the original instructions with the comical images. I also built a version cammoflage like the original instructions showed!
The flag of the skull is jolly Roger aka black beard the pirate an yes even know the rocket might look cute its very e v i l
I had one in the mid 70's. It didn't have all the smaller decals. Just the iron cross, and the skull
The whole Red Baron, German thing was sort of a fad in the late 60's and early 70's. The Das Ugly Stick was a popular RC airplane and Monogram did the Red Baron car plastic model kit which was then built as a real car (I loved the Hot Wheels version).
Those are WW II crosses but it uses the Blue Max theme except using the word red.
To repeat Chuck below, the Sweet Stick or Ugly Stick is a classic RC model, does everything well. Best most produced all around sport aircraft of all time. I myself even produce/produced it in several different sizes and configurations. (Radical RC). WWI and WWII the Germans were some pretty scary dudes. Their engineering almost overwhelmed the world in WWII. Get that education young people! Be on the good side of history! A proper stick is simple box construction, Hershey bar wing, triangular wing tips, round kind of head shaped vertical stabilizer/rudder. The general outline of a WWI Eindecker fighter monoplane. Designed by the late great Phil Kraft of Kraft radio and used to test out customers receivers post repair before returning to customers. We are using them today in a professional UAS lab. That's how fundamental the design in to model aircraft.
There is a bigger version now, you should look into it. It's 3" X 24"
Old news. I have 2 of them😅. Check my other videos and Subscribe.
That's an awesome build it looks new I have Der Big Red Max but I think I will build one of these next it looks great
Yup a classic of mine as well, got the red max in 1971 and was the citation series (same as what you have, just a odd name Estes had back then) when I got started in model rocketry. Mk-2 was it's name or part number for the Der Red max and I also got at that time the mk-5, the citation Bomarc that I mentioned to you that had the same issues as you had with the sizzor wing fin issue. The red max and Bomarc was one of my faves. Had another one in the 90s too but went out to the tree farm rocket cemetary, lol
The Nicht Stompen decals are a comical take on markings that are commonly seen on aircraft. AIrcraft are marked "NO STEP" on areas where the people working on the aircraft aren't supposed to step because it could damage the plane, typically on the elevators and ailerons. Sometimes HANDHOLD markings are also applied to relevant parts of vehicles. These markings would be well known to people who build lots of plastic scale model airplanes. So Nicht Stompen and Nicht Grabben are German translations of these markings, probably not grammatically correct, probably just joke translations to sound German in a comical way.
I think it came out in 1971 and the Citation Der Red Max. It came in a box kit like the Citation Patriot.
I had this model in 1973 (I'm pretty sure but definitely before 76) I remember launching it but I hadn't sanded down the nose cone connection to body enough and the nosecone did not pop off to open the chute so it went up and came down. It headed to earth like a missile and I thought it was done for but the nose cone stuck directly in the dirt almost 4" deep, did not destroy the rocket and I never launched it again for fear of damaging it. This was definitely my favorite!!!
All the old Centuri and Estes catalogs are online at www.ninfinger.org/rockets/rockets.html
Yes and Jim Z is another one
I notice you don’t aerofoil your fins, what’s your thoughts on aerofoiling them? No point?
Airfoils are fine. Depending on the vehicle. This one to me, calls for then square. Built ling ago and it wasn't in the instructions. Then I'm not looking for super performance. Scale if I'm following plans and going for accuracy I will. If not I won't. I believe it does help in performance for sure. Thanks for asking.
its modeled after the German world war 2 v2 missile (don't overthink the sympbolism, keep in mind when I was a kid we were not as "sensitive" as people these days. We actually could use words to describe things without having to worry about offending people
I found it in the 1973 catalog, but not in the 1972, so there’s that……………
Ok probably a 1973 release. Thanks. Do you have a Jolly Logic 3?
@@modelrockets3215 No sir. Just a JL2 and a FS Mini.
@@KevinsModels Ok. Looking to link an altimiter with a phone app for the data.
the 1st year for the der red max was 1971 in the "citation" line of rockets that came boxed and came with engines, ignitors, and wadding.
I've been wondering about the theme of this rocket too. Is it German/Nazi or pirate? I recently bought this rocket after a long period of hesitation because of the German Cross decal. The design is cool but do I want to take the chance of people at the park thinking that I'm sympathetic to the bad guys of WWII?
This kit two or three on my build pile list so I will withhold ranking it until it's flown. Nice job on the restoration!
Update: Just built and launched this rocket on a C6-3. Yeah, I agree, definitely a solid 8. The skull and bones parachute looks pretty sweet in the air but man talk about some serious hang time. This rocket could get lost easily with such a large chute. I think this kit would be fine with a 12 inch chute to minimize drift.
I think it is a kind of homage to the Red Baron. The comment decals are a sort of English/German mashup. So "Nicht Stompen" would sort of mean "No Stepping or Don't Step on it" Mitts generally means hands so Mitt Grabben I guess is supposed to mean Hand Grabbing. Motorverkens probably means "Motor Works or Engine". Lastly Der is the masculine "the" in German so Der Red Max simply means The Red Max. All in all a sorta semi-clever Germanish sounding bunch of text. The newer Der Red Max kits don't have the large Balkenkreuz ("Beam or Bar Cross") decal. They have another skull and crossbones instead. Due to its flexibility - it can easily be converted to D/E 24mm or an 18mm cluster - I'd give it a 9.
Oops, my mistake. I didn't see the second decal sheet. It does have the crosses.
Thanks for the break down. I have 2 Big Red Max's what missing? Everything seems ro be the same except for the X882 that goes on the nose cone.
Kinda of German it is themed after german rockets but for fun. Page 39 on the 1973 catalog earliest that I can see. I give it an 9 also another German themed is the Blue Bird Zero another very cool rocket and that is a solid 9 also. cool video.
Yes Blue Bird Zero similar stuff.
