CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Just as they are about to be stopped by police and government officials, E.T. lifts the boys' bikes into the air and brings them to safety.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he's right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn't sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the "little squashy guy," perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he'll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him. In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects.

I spontaneously cry when watching this scene, and I don't know why. I think it's connected to childhood, the loss of wonder and innocence as the world slowly grinds you down during adulthood. The child is gone but this scene takes me back there, momentarily.
I thought it was just me. Hahaha
Oh God I so feel you
So well said. I miss the 80s. 😥🥺
It really does and that’s why it will always work forever, this movie is absolutely incredible when it comes to emotional value
bodhid I’m getting very emotional too 😂😂
One of the most iconic movie scenes ever
👎👎👎👎👎😡😡😡😡
Couldn't agree more
I have to agree
This movie's script is stolen from Bengali writter Satayajit Ray's written script Alien
Ummmm...thanks I guess 😐
This is among the greatest imagery in cinematic history.
What an undisputed masterpiece.
Omg you read my mind 😂😂😂
I agree. The imagery of the setting sun with the BMX bikes riding across it is just stunning. Without doubt one of the greatest films of our time.
By George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic.
@@QwenLee I was actually aiming to direct credit to Spielberg and his vision.
@@LifeOfRy Oh, Spielberg is still the best too. 👍🏽👍🏽
In an interview with Steven Spielberg and John Williams, Spielberg was describing how Williams was having trouble with this scene, trying to time the score and flow of the music with the climax. After much frustration, Spielberg stopped Williams and said, "John, conduct it the way you want it, and I'll edit the film to fit your music." THAT, my friends, is respect of a composer!
The moment they fly.... gets me EVERYTIME!
Movie magic. As a kid we all wished we were them.
Absolutely classic!
The John Williams Score accompanies this scene so perfectly. Sends chills down my spine every, single, time.
The music really makes the movie without it it wouldn’t be the same at all
I get the same way with Robin Williams flying in Hook!
This scene was the reason why I learned how to ride a bike as a kid.
this scene never gets old
Nope!
More like this movie never gets old!
Sie sind einfach gut die Filme
und wissen sie auch warum ?
that corect
bring back ET at the theater
I've always loved the fact that he took all of the boys flying. Not just Elliott.
This scene brings tears to my eyes. Not of sadness but joy. All the stuff that they have that is CGI could never compare to this. They don’t make movies like this anymore. The music was everything. Just the moment. I could watch this over and over again and never get tired of it. Cheers to Steven Spielberg!
Am I the only one who likes the fact that Michael's three friends were part of the huge climax at the end? I thought it was great.
TV247 I did too. I love the team up aspect of all them getting together regardless of their personal issues and personalities and working together to help get ET back home. The power of teamwork right there.
I love when Mike says “get the bikes!” And you just hear his friend reply “let’s do it!”. No questions asked. No hesitation. The original ride or die crew.
That sounded dirty. lol

I thought that's what made it great!
This is some of John Williams best music.
SoaringTrumpet i almost cried while hearing the music, its magical
John Williams and Hans Zimmer are the kings of film scoring IMO
SoaringTrumpet somehow reminds me of indiana jones
@@CharlieBladeRemus dont forget James Horner and Ennio Morricone
@@jellify Makes sense - Williams did the score for Indiana Jones, too
I always loved this scene. It reminds me of riding around the neighborhood with my 5 best friends on "missions" as boys, solving mysteries we would make up, or searching through abandoned buildings. I'm kinda outta sync with kids these days but I hope they're still using their imaginations to have those classic childhood memories. Sometimes I forget how good an 80's childhood was.
Now kids think it's stupid to do that I'm 16 and I did that in my childhood too.
Kids today don't ride bikes or explore on account of the obesity.
I feel the same way. You couldn't have put it in words any better. The 80's rocked!
There were ropes from trees to swing from and so much more outside activities with just our sense of adventures.
David Hoggan Dude you're never too old to do stuff like that. You should try it again some time.

Remember watching this movie with my father in the 80's.. Hollywood doesn't make movies that feel magical anymore...
This is me escaping from Area 51
With the boys
I think the strategy is we need to ride into Area 51 on bikes. When we hit the military road block, we just have to believe and the ETs will allow us to fly over Groomlake and into Area 51 to save them.

E.T.TheExtraTerrestrial 101 ...
@Gaming And Movie Entertainment I wasn't born yet when this movie came out either, and I'm turning 30 later this year. Even though it came out in 1982, I think it was still pretty popular into the 90s and early 2000s, and even to this day it's definitely considered a classic and I'm sure there are kids still watching it.
@@CherryFrog321I was born a few years after this movie first came out but as a kid they brought it back to the theater I think briefly or I had the movie and man does this movie always bring the same feelings back each time. They used to have a ride at Universal it was amazing and the part when you start flying was fun and if you were lucky and in the right seat the E.T. Animatronic would say hello "insert name* or something like that.
Possibly the best soundtrack of all times, maybe the film is simple as story but what you hear is pure complex art and it gives to the movie everything a human being can feel and will never be forgotten...
Best? ...... Go watch Spider-Man dude.
Hahaha it is useless to have a conversation with a Kid that obiously doesn't know anything about anything, specially films history.
Diego García I´m a teenager smartass. Btw all musics are unique in their own way so your comment is complete bullshit.

The power of John Williams brings everything to life
ET is one of the few movies in history that has genuinely zero flaws. Everything about it is absolutely perfect. It’s the greatest family movie of all time and it will last forever.
Here here!
Young C Thomas Howell has the best line..."We made it....OH SHIT"
GavinJ37 I wonder if he signs autographs with that line by request from fans. It's definitely one of the more memorable moments of the film.
Yeah

Hahaha true😂
I always thought It'd be funny if e.t flew off with just Eliot and left the others behind haha

1:43 HANDS DOWN IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE MOVIE AND THE SONG!!! JOHN WILLIAMS DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT IT GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS ON HOW POWERFUL THIS SCENE IS!!!
It’s a awesome part Steven and j m and Chris can do very good at movies
Forever crying at this scene!!
Goosebumps. John Williams is a genius.

dosent this movie have a lot of darkness right.to.
I was like 5 or 6 when I first saw this movie back in the late 80s. This right here is MY CHILDHOOD!!! The shot of them flying behind the sun setting, the musical score, everything in this film is a MASTERPIECE!
I was born when this movie came out and I watched for the first time when I was 4.
I was a sobbing mess and my mom had to explain to me that ET had to go home with his parents while I cried non-stop and my mom didn’t know what to do. 😂😂😂😂😂
This was the first movie I cried and from that point, I haven’t stopped crying.
I remember when I was a kid after seeing this I would always ride my bike as fast as I could pretending I was carrying E.T.
vikes4life0 bruh i did that too. I thought i was the only one ☝️

The best scene from one of the best movies ever

E.T. used to be pretty nice and friendly, these days aliens are trying to scare the shit out of you!
During that time when "The Thing" released, that's why everyone hated it
You know the ironic thing? As friendly as E.T. is, this movie still scared the hell out of me when I was young.
Same right here

That's what makes E.T. Special
E.T.TheExtraTerrestrial 101
The shot of them flying across the moon still looks amazing
Isn't that the sun? Looks too bright to be the moon.
It’s the sun the other one with just Elliot and E.T is the moon
One of the greatest moments in cinema history
always makes me cry at this scene. such is the joy of a 80s kid.
the scene that made me cry was the end where they said their goobyes
I remember seeing this in the theatre and you can NOT believe the reaction from early audiences! There was an EXPLOSION of applause, gasps, cries of "YES!" and tears that made this moment in film history one of the strongest at the time. If you notice; they have a telepathic and (meta)physical link at this point, Eliot first closes his eyes and communicates his thought of emmulating their Moonlight Ride together and cut to ET and we see instant understanding in his eyes and actions.
I remember being 10 and watching this in the theater. The whole theater was packed and I swear when the bikes went into the sky you could feel every heart in the movie theater going up with them.
One of the greatest movies ever filmed; and set to some of the the most remarkable music EVER written by the incomparable John Williams.
I still cry every time. 😥💙
How could this NOT get the Oscar?!
Of course it got an Oscar! The only one that really matters 😜…BEST ORIGINAL SCORE 🫶 John Williams.
Is it bad that when they were flying "into the sunset" kind of effect, I just started screaming "STAY GOLD E.T!!" I'm terrible... XD
its good when I find references to outsiders that have nothing to do with the movie 😌
"WE MADE IT!"

HOW DID YOU NOT SEE THEM?!?!?
Marsproject11 they were behind them
< kid punches cop >
Bc they where looking forward and not to the aide
Careful with those walkie-talkies. You might shoot someone.
+Kris Smith Thank God they changed them back to guns on Blu-Ray.
+RockNRoll Star yup
+RockNRoll Star This is a 'family' film.
+Kris Smith Gimme a break.
+Kris Smith Hi. Do you know Where can I find the original movie? I bought it,but they used CGI and included that scene where E.T flies before the cops scene which was not in the original. The fact cops were carrying guns and E.T felt the danger made him fly with the kids,no need for political correctness here.I want the real original movie, without the first fly. They could have left it in the extras only.
2:04 The way Elliot KNEW how to land in this scene and how everyone else followed HIM! Little things like that is what makes this movie so damn epic
I am sorry to tell you that exact detail is not in the original release of the film.
Actually enhances the scene in this case. We see he learned his lesson from the last time (“Don’t crash, please”).
I remember when I was younger I was watching this with my dad, and the only time I have EVER seen him cry was when he was watching this movie. I took the piss out of him, but now watching it back I can understand :) such a lovely movie with childhood memories.
John Williams must have broke 1000 sticks performing this music
RickMay r u sure its 1000? And not 10000?
sticks?
You mean batons?
Words can't explain how much this scene means to me!! The music captivates the magic and wonder of ET. As a 4 year old child I couldn't get enough of this movie! Now as a 28 year old I watching this whole movie again I feel like that four year old again.
America must have been great in the 80's!
+blap200 It was GREATER in the 90s.
Well remember nobody ever talks bad about the 80s cuz of nostalgia so it's way worse than people make it out to be
+blap200 Must have. I wasn't born in the 80's, but I do a lot of thinking about what the 80's was like. If only my parents had be 3 to 4 years earlier then I would have lived in the late 80's. 90's wasn't too bad though.
No. The music was nothing but gay synthesizer crap
jjman9 WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?
Man, the 1980's were a really special time in film. Spielberg/Williams shepherded in a whole new generation of cinephiles. Their look and sound was my childhood.
0:52 The moment where he screams "We made it!", and then the adults suddenly appear right behind them, always cracked me up 😂
Watching Stranger Things, I loved the little homage/subversion of this scene with Eleven's van flipping :)
No offense but stranger things sucks but that's my opinion sorry if you got offended but I just get upset when people talk about stranger things because stranger things is not original and overrated
E.T.TheExtraTerrestrial 101
it reminds me of this scene too!

@@dauntep1872 what
Saw this with my parents at the Leows Multiplex in Times Square when it came out. I'll never forget how all of us in the theater cheered at the iconic fly by scene.
This is what is meant by movie magic.
John Williams said that the music for this scene was absolutely unique in his (very long) career. It was always his job as conductor to score music to match an existing scene that had already been edited. The timing, melody, everything had to match film that already existed. He was struggling with this scene in a way that really stood out, to the extent that he sat down with Spielberg and told him he was having trouble making it work. Spielburg told him to compose the music so that it felt right to him and he as director would make adjustments as necessary. John Williams went back to the drawing board and composed this absolutely priceless score, and then Spielburg made his editors fit the film to the music. The reason this is so fabulous is that it is literally an opera about kids riding bikes - the pure joy and adventure of childhood captured in the sound of instruments. Stephen Spielburg wisely bowed to the genius of it and got an unforgettable scene.
This is the crappy one where they took out the guns and replaced them with walkie-talkies.

35 years old and i still feel the magic ❤ i get chills everytime they go up and the other bicycle scene. The music and acting is pure gold❤ This movie is like a time machine that takes you back to childhood instantly..i hope they Never try to remake.
As a cyclist, this is the song I play to get me pumped. As a human, this song allows me to relive childhood for that 45 min ride.
The score is just brilliant. The moment the bicycles take off the ground and the gorgeous theme begins, I feel goosebumps!
1:05 the tension,1:11 ET close up (first time during the whole sequence) and then, 1:14 Miracle!! Beyond human comprehension. Power of cinema!!

Me and the bois heading to Area 51 to free the homie E.T.
I was 12 years old when I saw this with my family in theaters. And when the flying scene came up, the entire audience clapped their hands with a lot of OOOHS and AAAHS! It was really magical.
If you don't feel like standing up and cheering when they take off into the sky, you may need to check your pulse.
Skeptical Baby
Not really. But then again I never really liked this movie. I could never understand why people weren't scared of this thing. It's an alien monster.
Truth I know plenty of people who are more scared of this movie than they are of horror movies. But it helps that the alien "monster" isn't a monster at all, he's friendly and harmless.
Skeptical Baby
Yeah until it gets tired of skittles or wants to procreate.
Truth You mean Reese's Pieces, right? And it doesn't matter. This movie is still a classic.

I want to go back to my childhood😢adulthood is a trap😩
Such a beautiful film and has aged well. Watched it again over Christmas there and it still brings on the tears.
This scene always stuck with me, feels different watching it again as an adult. The epic bike chase gave me chills and couldn’t help but feel emotional when they started to ascend. Truly one of the best movies that made my childhood.
I always get goosebumps when the bikes start to fly. Such an amazing movie!
I love this movie
Yep i remember that movie it was great

Yesenia The Hedgehog me too
When I was a little boy I used to fast forward to this scene and keep rewinding it to watch it again.
Back in the day when I was playing cops and robbers with the other kids this scene would come back to me some times. Aaaahhh those were the days, running around with an invisible E.T in your invisible bike. Being a kid was awesome.
80s looked so fun man. I was born in the wrong generation. Nowadays you see kids causing trouble, and just on their phones 24-7 but in the 80s kids had fun riding their bmx's etc.I wish I grew up in the 40s,50s,60s,70s,80s or the 90s
same 😅 I feel you, this generation is a hunk a' bs
90s they were just the same really. Late 90s anyway.
probably better than now/.

Believe me the 80s was totally awesome. I am a child of the 80s and it was every bit as fun as it looked. You had to use your imagination and fun was being outdoors on a nice day like this with friends.
Truth Totally agree! I was 6-15 in the 80s. great time to grow up!
This is my favorite scene of the movie.. It never gets old. It just feels like they're not gonna make it then all a sudden they go up in the air. And the music this makes it 10 times better.

I was working tonight Jan 13, 2023 as a bartender at Arts Common in Calgary, Canada. Calgary Philharmonic was on stage and they're feature Symphony are Heroes of Film. As soon as I heard this song from ET (when they fly over the moon) I can't help but being emotional and teary eyed. I don't know what got into me but as if I was transported back in time. I believe music can make you cry.

When that bike leaves the ground and the music comes in from John Williams that is pure magic. I feel like I'm the one on air in that moment...
There's something unprecedented in that sequence, both from a technical and an artistic standpoint. No one has never been able to make anything near that big and that pure about childhood. Spielberg has truly ceased it in essence.
There is a new series on Netflix called "Stranger Things". It's based on this movie and plays also in the 80's. Pretty cool actually. The new generation needs more old school stuff like this.
On this movie ? Really ?
+Steve Rogers yes, also a couple more movies that I heard of but they all have a lot of things in common. I already watched the first season and it was really really good tho :) not cliché. The best part is when E.T comes to life and the kids like SHUT UP! and ET'S like "EVERYDAY EVERYDAY" i was laughing so had
realised stranger things is heavily influenced by this film and a lot of 80s sci-fi. 80s sci-fi is the gift that keeps on giving to this day
I am proud to say that I saw this movie with a VHS.
Such an emotional serene. To me this scene represents the new generation getting away from the adults that don’t know what’s going on. I was 7 when this came out, I’m still that 7 year old trying to get away from those adults.
Love this scene. Brings back nostalgic feelings
This makes me so nostalgic
