    I like the excitement you have when you tell us about these places...You're like one of those teachers who is so passionate in his field that the students - us - are drawn towards what he is teaching.
    The video is awesome as always.

    I have been there twice in the past few years and found it achingly beautiful. The wind turbines on the mountain ridge contrasted with the mine fire is a lovely, meditative, hopeful contrast. Perhaps the fire has mostly moved on, but evidence that it is still burning somewhere underground can still easily be found in Centralia. I must have missed the BBQ though, maybe next time. :)

    I grew up not 40 miles from there (Orangeville). Drove thru the area many times before the road was closed for good. You could see the hot spots belching sulfur smoke alongside the road and the snow melted in the dead of winter. I haven't been there in years though. Last time I was thru there were only a couple buildings standing. A little eerie seeing sidewalks ending at concrete steps leading to nothing.

    Ransom Riggs found a pretty interesting old news paper from 1975, it had a metal detector add filled out with an address to this city. It’s still on his saved Instagram stories, and it’s pretty cool.

    Funny enough that I first heard about it in a kids audio book (the three investigators). Just found this RUclips channel because I researched something from my calendar (which is from you guys). Love that content! Please never stop doing that. Although it makes me a little sad since Germany seems to be so boring in that terms of content.

      Seeker Stories Right? Coal seam fires are insanely expensive and difficult to put out so often its easier to just move whole towns. Not a ton to say about the road to say except that it's a surprising lively place. Taken over by ATV's, motorcycles, and BBQ's.

      the local government has a good idea on putting it out, but the federal government-as usual- had to step in and mess it up.

    A missed opportunity. I'm not a fan-nut or anything, but I do know that Centralia is one of the major influences for the game series, "Silent Hill" It would have been cool if he had mentioned that just for fun.

      Atlas Obscura Why don't they put them out? It seems like they're wasting a crap load of coal. And how do the fires get any oxygen underground like that? It seems like you could just pump a crap ton of liquid nitrogen onto the fire and quench it by 1) crowding out the oxygen and 2) dropping the ambient temp below the kindling point. As I recall, a company specializing in fighting fires with liquid nitrogen lost the bid to put out the Gulf War Fires. Seems like it's worth a shot.

    I live 40 minutes from here. I've wanted to go visit this spot for years, I love creepy shit and urban exploring. But this place makes me a little nervous, with the noxious fumes and whatnot.

    • @atlasobscura
      @atlasobscura  8 лет назад

      +MrStrangeSensation It's pretty low key honestly. You have to go really searching to even find anything still smoking. You are a lot more likely to find people grilling.

    With the fire still smoldering and signs that give warning of what`s under the ground or what could happen hopefully no one will forget why Centralia is no more.I have been there also and do not think it wise for anyone to just go walking in the woods...what happened to the young man falling into a hole that just opens up may happen again.Perhaps even on a larger scale because the coal deposits are slowly burning a larger and larger cavern under the ground and it extends where we cannot see.

    I never could understand why they never tried to flood the mine fire to put it out. Pump enough water, or sea water into it and fill it up.

    • @atlasobscura
      @atlasobscura  9 лет назад +5

      The problem is that it's burning the coal seam itself, the part that hasn't been mined yet, so the fire is surrounded by dirt. To put it out they have to dig it all up which is usually too expensive.

    • @RyanMartinez

      Start a new mining/firefighting operation. Dynamite around the perimeter of the affected site, then dig in and towards the fire, wait some years, see if the fire died out a little, then dig or dynamite some wider holes. Basically you're making a man made volcano, but the goal is to get it to die out letting nature take over the job of putting it out with rains and new growth. I dunno. I'm no engineer. lol
      There has to be some creative way to do that. Maybe reclaim the site if for no other purpose than industry and overall safety. You don't want the fire to move to other towns. lol

    • @tumsfestival
      @tumsfestival 6 лет назад +1

      The government relocated the residents because it was by far the least-expensive option. Some people have stated the cost to put the fire out in 1982 could've been as high as $600 million, whereas the relocation cost was $42 million.
