My brother shared this video with me! As a disabled 60y/o f, we feel this would be a great first project for me! Thank you so much!!!! I'm excited to start!
Thank you for the simple tool option! So weird how many "beginner" wood working vids require a table saw, a miter saw, etc... why would a true beginner have anything complicated and expensive? Appreciate the simplicity!
With the amount of weight (My heavy ass books) I was needing this bookshelf to bear, no IKEA bookshelf was gonna cut it and the prices the stores wanted for something that sturdy were insane. Thank you! I think I can manage this!
@ahsatansrela1633 I think you can make it work either way. However, if you mounted hinges directly to the trim, they will impart a lot of torque on the trim. So, I'd lean towards no trim.
Okay, this got out of hand. My infographic idea turned into full instructions. Then I tried to make it free on Etsy, but the best I could do was $0.01. Anyhow my draft can be found here: www.theolsonoutfit.com/s/Book-Shelf-Guide.pdf Incidentally code BOOKSHELFDRAFT is working on Etsy for a while.
I really like this unfortunately for the size of bookshelf I was planning, it was going to be really expensive, 6 - 1x12, 1 - 1x4, and 2 - 1x2. For an almost 8ft tall 7tier shelf, only about 15" wide, (a tall skinny shelf like the IKEA billy). This would be MUCH sturdier, but right now we are on a budget, and might just go with the IKEA shelves, as we would need 2. (Total for 1 shelf was just over $100 in wood alone vs 65 for the IKEA shelf). But I'm saving this video for a future potential build!
You need a better microphone setup or something, seemed to glitch throughout. This is an amazing project that my grandkids can help me with. I love the content. I hope it was your microphone and not my hearing aids (LOL).
Hello friend you, said you could send an infografic to help me build it. I really like the simplicity of the built. Not sure how you want to send the graphics le me know please. Best Jp

Yes, the spacers do eat up the board feet, but iit's sturdy. You could use a 1x2 cleat, nailed and glued as a support. Then use a single board as a re-usable template to accurately measure the spacing for the cleats.
I know this video was posted quite awhile ago, but I am super Interested in an info graphic. I would love to build a shelf for my boyfriend, but I am like a beginner beginner. It’s been a running joke-whenever I ask him what he wants from me-that he wants me to build him a shelf. He could probably explain all of this to me in a way that my ADHD brain could understand, but I really want to surprise him for our upcoming 4 year anniversary. *I accidentally sent this as a reply to anther comment. ** if it helps he did give me carte blanche of his saw, saw, and saw.

@@TheOlsonOutfit Thank you for this! I need to make some shelving with very specific dimensions and these instructions (and the video) will help a lot.
I have finally made an infographic, let me know what you think:

Love this bookcase. Simple design, easy to build, and brutally strong!
Thanks you.

@@Amberhoneydreamsz that warms my heart to hear this.

@narthic with the trim added these shelves are very sturdy. Mine even hold a full set of hardback encyclopedias.
I like the simplicity of your bookcase.
thanks
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I am not a woodwork and barely knew how to use a circular saw 5 years go. I made this and it looks great.
Thank you for the kind words. Glad to hear I could help you!
Simple. Thats just what i needed
Thanks
Love the simplicity of this! I had been thinking of doing the same thing, but hadn't considered your method for doing the back.
Thanks. The full back adds cost, but completely eliminates "racking."
Thanks-I understand 👏!
I made this!! Thank you!!
So glad to hear that! 😀
This is amazing, thank you so much. I need to fill a wall with bookshelves, but I have no experience with woodworking.
I love that you threw out the measuring tape❤
So helpful! Anyone know- if adding doors would it still be good to cover the shelf support with trim or just get in the way?

Typos included at no extra charge ;-)
Did you ever make that printable instructions? It would be awesome .
@@zugalo333 I have a rough draft. I'll see if I can get it polished up soon.

I tried using the link and it doesn't work. Thanks for trying anyway.
darn, it seems to not work with RUclips mobile. Have you tried typing the address into your browser?
Yeah I tried using it on chrome

Hi can you add the printable instructions that you mentioned please
www.theolsonoutfit.com/s/Book-Shelf-Guide.pdf
You may have to cut and paste the address into your browser, and it may take a moment to download.
I have posted free "infographic" style instructions here:

Sounds like a good time with your grand kids! I think I had the audio output too high for RUclips and caused some clipping. Whoops!
I didn’t realise that I’d been using CAD for years!

with the cost of wood being what it is, I think I will skip the pieces of wood for spacers.

Screws and nails are tools too.
Goddamn expensive and material-heavy project.
@rasklaat2 yep. Fast, good, or cheap. You can only have two.
