New Off-Set 3D Mask Design with No Template or Detailed Measuring Required!

  • Hello Shiny, Crafty People! Welcome back! Today I'm making a cool variation of the common 3D mask that requires NO template and NO detailed measuring!
    You'll start with 2 (or 3 for an extra layer) fabrics cut to one of the following sizes:
    XL: 9"x10"
    LARGE: 8.5"x9.5"
    MEDIUM: 7.5"x8.5"
    SMALL: 6.5"x7.5"
    THAT'S THE ONLY MEASURING YOU HAVE TO DO!!!
    Here's what else you need:
    Matching thread (if desired)
    Elastic
    Silicone Toggles for the elastic (if desired)
    Iron or wood press
    Sewing Machine
    Scissors or Rotary Cutter
    Here's where I buy my elastic: www.amazon.com/Elastic-Shed-P...
    Here's where I buy my silicone toggles: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...
    If I'm not recording a video, I can make one of these masks in less than 5 minutes. And they're quite gratifying to make AND very comfortable to wear, as long as you get the sizing correct.
    I would suggest the LARGE for people with bigger faces. If you typically require a large mask in any other type of mask, choose LARGE.
    MEDIUM is good for "Goldilocks." You know, that person who thinks some masks are too big and some are too small. MEDIUM seems to fit men and women of average or smaller stature, although some much smaller faces may find this one a little too big.
    SMALL is great for little kids and for people with very small stature.
    You can always find an "in-between" size by using a bigger seam allowance. So if the MEDIUM is a bit too big and the SMALL is too small, try utilizing the MEDIUM but using a 3/8" seam allowance rather than a 1/4" allowance.
    SPECIAL TIP:
    Choose an inner fabric and an outer fabric that contrast greatly. That would provide the nicest look when you use this reversible mask in the second configuration.
    MY REVIEW:
    I rate this mask 8/10 for comfort, ease of construction, and effectiveness for my face.
    Have fun making this cool & easy mask and, until next time, stay crafty!!

    I like this mask style very much. Of course everyone tweeks a little to fit the user’s face. My tweek was requested by my son. I added 3 2” vertical wires, 1” apart at the mouth. I made 3 very slits at top of mouth, slide in the wires, then sewed each closed. Made the mask day after you submitted this mask. It fits my son’s face and keeps the material away from his mouth. He has worn it every day since. It holds it fit well. Only issue is he has to wash by hand rather than the washer because of the wires. I enjoy your videos. You present the material very well. Thank you.

    I saw this a couple of weeks ago and got busy. I sewed a dozen with the long side a the top and a week later another dozen mistakenly using the short side as the top. They fit differently. The short side as top came too high around the eyes. I can’t tell from your instructions which was your preferred way. I also put nose wire in before sewing up the opening for turning. Then I sewed all around sewing the nose wire securely in place. My son loved the design but wanted a larger one, 10.5/ 11.5. He loves that there is much less glass fogging. Keep up the videos. Your steps are clear.

    Thank you for this easy, easy attractive mask! I do a couple of things differently: I sew across one side & then stick down the nose piece on the inside of the top, turn the fabric & stitch around the nose piece. Then sew around all the edges leaving an opening & turn inside out & stitch around the whole thing. One other thing: I have a small face so I reverse the top and bottom; the smaller pouch fits my nose better!

    I made this mask this evening. I find that I like my masks 'larger' for comfort as long as they fit snug to my face. Anyway, I tweaked it a tad bit...by tucking in the upper corners where the elastic goes to keep the corners from being to high on the face. I also added a nose piece by sewing in a matching piece on the 'front' side. I like the wrong side out and I used a 10.5 x 11.5 inch piece and added a piece of filter material (polypropylene) of the same size sandwiched between the two pieces of fabric. I have made hundreds of masks and I have to say this is one of my favorites. It reminds me of the old pandemic masks you see in photographs...but it is super comfortable, sits far enough away from the mouth that you can easily breath. I wish I could post a photograph of how nice it looks. Will definitely make many more of this mask.

    • @betsyforth6924
      @betsyforth6924 3 года назад

      do you mean you may have cut a rectangular piece of material and sewed the nose piece on afterwards ?

    • @mazola5
      @mazola5 3 года назад +1

      @@betsyforth6924 - Yes. I should have been more clear. The mask size I made is 10.5 by 11.5. I then cut a piece of fabric about 2" by 4 or 5"....sewed it together leaving one end open then turned it inside out. Stuck the nose piece in, tucked in the unsewn end and then placed it at the top of the 'right' side and sewed in on all the way around.

    • @stirfryshouse2726
      @stirfryshouse2726 3 года назад

      I agree that the mask needs to be a little larger. I made a 10x10 (layer cake size) and still wanted the fit closer to the ears. I did not add any additional fabric for the nosepiece. I simply sewed two parallel lines at the top to slide the piece in between. Since the aluminum strips from the big A have been getting thinner, I use two glued together so don’t worry about breaking/replacement. To get the extra side fabric away from the eyes, like you, I also pleated it into itself (making a v) before I sewed on the elastic.
      I only like it turned inside out. It felt too flat as sewn.
      All in all, with some tweaks this is a good pattern. It is much faster then the 3D I have been making (I will look up and post the author, it’s in Spanish I think). Since I always use interfacing, adding it will take a little extra time. Not sure I’m ready to give up on my 3D because it has half circle cut outs to get a peak for the nose, less bulk near the eyes, and I can get 16 outer fabrics from one yard. My 3D is from ruclips.net/video/s5NCeTet7mE/видео.html and for the sewing hints ruclips.net/video/0AzeR7QCbQg/видео.html.

    I developed a mask pattern that uses rectangles cut on the bias. I flip the top down a little and pinch in the sides. It fits great, measurements are easy, and the bias-cut fabric stays in place much better, especially with elastic that goes behind the head. I’ve tried it on all sorts of face shapes and nose lengths, and everyone reports great fit.

    You should do a rating video for every mask design you made - pros and cons... would really help us out in choosing what to make :)
    Like :
    Best design for glasses
    Best design for beard
    Best design for ease of sewing
    Best 3D mask
    And so on....
    Really Think it would make a great video to help us through the rest of this pandemic!!

      I’m a fan too! It’s got a very geometric nature, so it’s kinda pointy. Foe the next one of these, I’m going to use some stabilizer to keep the lines of the mask crisp.
