Frame 313 greatest world series ever. 2011 (TEX vs STL) is a close second on the strength of David Freese's game 6 monstrous, god like heroics after his 5th inning blunder.
The greatest World Series ever in my opinion. There’s been some great series in recent years (2011, 2016, 2017), but this one has some great things about it: -5 out of 7 games decided by 1 run -4 out of 7 decided by the final at bat -3 extra innings games -Walk off home run by Kirby Puckett to force Game 7 -The legendary pitching battle between two Hall of Famers John Smoltz and Jack Morris Baseball is a beautiful game. The game never writes the same script twice
"The game never writes the same script twice" - I dunno man, seems that the script for how the Yankees always beat the Twins in October has been repeating itself over and over again.
He is humble but in his own way he was humbly beaming with pride because for 8 innings he matched his idol growin up.....he idolized Jack Morris and think he took great pride in that fact and i think its one of the reasons Smoltz pitched well too because he knew Jack wasnt gonna give up much so Smoltz knew he prettt much had to be perfect
I think that’s one of the things I’ve learned to really appreciate as a Twins fan. A win is only as great as the opponent you beat, and they don’t get much greater than John Smoltz.
Sometimes 2 great men have to duel it out to death... and one man has to win.. I've seen interviews with Jack where he literally said " it was a kid, I was facing a kid.. I didn't understand it was John.. but I'd do it again"..
FUN FACT: Big Jack Morris was the winningest pitcher in the Major Leagues in the decade of the 1980s. He won World Series titles with Detroit, Minnesota and 2 with Toronto and had 4 TOTAL World Series Rings! ...He pitched a no hitter. He was a World Series MVP and had a winning career playoff record. TOP 50 all time in both strikeouts and in victories. Big Jack is currently 1 of only 23 Hall of Fame pitchers to be in the Top 50 in both career wins (256) and in career strikeouts(over 2400). He also led the league in strikeouts once, in victories twice, and was a 5 time all star.
Jack Morris pitched a 10 inning complete game shutout in game 7 of the World Series. An absolutely insane accomplishment. I honestly can’t think of any other feat in sports that can top that.

Wow, this is heavy. Just wonderful. For all that happened in the whirlwind that led to Game 7, that night really was about these two pitchers. Smoltz went to a sports psychologist after his bad start that season because he was really getting down on himself. By the postseason, you would never have known it. At age 24, the Braves' young phenom was finally meeting the high expectations that followed his surprising All-Star season two years earlier. I still regret not being able to watch that final hit by Gene Larkin. I was in Air Force technical training, which followed basic training, at Sheppard AFB. I was in our dorm's day room watching with both Twins & Braves fans. Then a student leader who was one of those by the book types, told us we had to turn off the TV and go to our rooms. After soom resistance, we gave in. I didn't find out till the next morning from my friend from Iowa, who was supporting the Braves, who held up one finger and said it was one run. I said with a disappointing voice, "it was the Braves." He said, "nope." Man I couldn't believe what I heard. Then I must have followed every story in the local Wichita Falls newspaper about the game. I even remember a sport journalist comparing the TX Rangers to the Twins and how the Twins played fundamental good baseball. I come on RUclips from time to time to watch those great plays from Kirby saving game 6 to that final hit in game 7. That hit was a rare moment in men's professional sports, notice I'm excluding the Lynx, with everything on the line where our team didn't choke. This was no Garry Anderson missed field goal.
I’m not a Minnesota sports fan but i feel bad for what you guys have gone through since this. With the Vikings repeatedly choking in the biggest moments, the Twins failing to win a playoff game, and the Wolves pretty much never even being competitive enough to choke besides 04
I can remember watching this series as an 8yr kid, and absolutely fell in love w/ baseball! As a Braves fan it was heartbreaking but looking back on this series now I’m thankful I got to witness something this amazing!
It was absolutely heart-breaking as a Braves fan but the '91 WS was truly one of the very best. Being a child at the time and all of us gathering in front of the television to watch Games 6 and 7 was such a memorable experience for sure. Such a shame that Lonnie Smith didn't make it home in the 8th. That ended up being the game!
as a lifelong twins fan, this was pure magic...watching jack morris, back in his hometown, throw an absolute gem...still gives me goosebumps...i was a college freshman baseball player in california watching this game 7 with my dorm floor mates...so proud of my hometown club.
I was so fortunate to get to go to this game. So much fun. Such a great memory. The walk back to the car, which was parked near First Ave, was the best.
Heh, I am an Oriole fan and was about 10 years old in 91'. I would imitate pitchers windups and Jack Morris' was one of my favorites to do. It was just so unorthodoxed looking. Him and Jack McDowell were my favorite mustache and goateed pitchers.
I was 10 years old and in the 5th grade I didn’t know how special it was till years later but I remember all of us kids talking about it the next day at school!
Ties with Tom Brady's comeback win in the Super Bowl in 2017 over the Atlanta Falcons. The biggest clutch performances by a pitcher and a QB in Pro sports championship game history. BOTH in "overtime" by the way!
Interesting side note, Lonnie just happened to be the very person that happened to not see the ball which caused him to not be the go-ahead run. The handshake might have taken the edge off of Lonnie just enough to lose the ball in all the Homer Hankie waiving. Probably not, as Lonnie was a professional, but he did have major issues with being recognized for his talent early on to an extreme extent...so you never know. That sign of respect from Harper may have dulled Lonnies "I'll show you" attitude a little. Again, probably not...just interesting that it was the same guy and the pause was that costly.
Usually if game 6 is a monster game 7 is an afterthought and vice-versa... What makes this World Series the best I ha e seen in my lifetime is BOTH game 6 and 7 were awesome.
As a long suffering MN sports fan (we can never win anything), that is our greatest sports moment. 87 was awesome as our first...Miracle on Ice is up there because of all the MN connections to the team, but that Series/Game 7 is the greatest. PS- much respect to Smoltz, helluva game and he is the best tv analyst in baseball, by far.
Smoltz v. Morris. This is yet another reason why I love this game. These memories remind me of a time when my twin and I and our dad watched sports together. Great players! Great announcers! Great fans! :-)
I met John at the chipotle In secaucus when I was working over there Nicest man on planet earth although I’m a Yankees fan he gave us a hard time in 96 and 99 I respect that
This game was now 31 years ago and baseball has changed a lot since then, especially with how managers handle their pitchers. I know the numbers give you a clue about when it’s time to pull a pitcher, but sometimes I think the answer is you don’t. You let them do what they were made to do. I can only imagine what Tom Kelly would’ve endured had Morris failed in the 10th, but he gave Jack Morris the ball and now 31 years later I’m watching this video.
When a pitching duel reaches those lofty heights where baseball transcends into art or what made Baseball the American pastime......miss seeing startin pitchers like Jack.....10 inning shutout in a game seven? That is insane. And it his last line made it even better that he asked whats wrong cuz his kid was cryin and he jus said dad im jus so happy........some men do things so heroic in a game that it moves people..
Jack Morris, 7-4 career postseason record. His first postseason loss ever came October 8, 1987, against Juan Berenguer and the Minnesota Twins. How appropriate that he wins the biggest game of his life for the Twins.
I might be biased (as a Twins fan), but in all honesty, this was one of the greatest World Series to watch. Mad props to the Braves, though. Those guys were just as tough. But, Kirby and The Boys were just magical. Watch out for T-REX, lifting them elves up off those bases...LOL...
Another somewhat little known fact about this game--Morris talks about his son at the end of this clip. Well Smoltz had no children yet at this time but his wife was more than eight months pregnant with their first-born. He was asked the night before if he would sleep well, and he said yes, but "she's the one who gets up in the middle of the night, not me!" Imagine pitching this game with that kind of pressure, but also having in the back of your mind the idea that your wife could go into labor any time as well!
I know Morris got some help along the way, but still this is the greatest pitching performance in baseball history. To throw a complete game 10 inning shutout in game 7 of the World Series is simply unbelievable.
As a Braves fan, the last two Braves teams were better overall than the 90s teams! The 90s ones usually had too weak of offenses, bench players sucked, relievers and closers were unreliable. They were all about the starting pitching in the 90s, and other playoff teams they played were better OVERALL
Single greatest World Series ever played . The only time both W.S. teams went from last place to first place and the only W.S. where every game was won by the home team . Awesome
Just to let Jack Morris know, I watched this entire game in the day room of an 8ID battalion in Fort Ord, Ca. I had just come back from a combat tour in Iraq with the 3ID.
As a Detroiter, watching Jack do this was amazing. I would love to see Jack today trying to get pulled after 6 innings, he would tell the manager to get back in the dugout. In Detroit they always talk about Mickey Lolich in 1968 game 7. Before my time, so Jack is my Lolich.
i love reliving this moment in baseball history i just wish i could see it again before i croak. i'm glad i didn't hve to face him in little league when we were kids lol.
Big Jack! Greatest Competitor in baseball history! ... Hall of Famer... Biggest clutch pitching performance in Game 7 World Series history. There was NO WAY the manager was going to take him out of the game! NO WAY! What a competitor.
Perfect comparison! Both veteran leaders who had already experienced individual and team success with another team, but came over for 1 season and delivered on the biggest stage
5:56 Was that Ron Gant that got caught looking? I'm sure it was just because Jack was pumped but the way he stared him down after striking him out, made it look like he really disliked him.
There may have been better baseball games played in the history of the game, but along with the "Miracle on Ice", this is one I will remember forever. Today's game no manager would ever let Morris or Smoltz pitch into the eighth or later.
Babe Ruth Award. Given to the most outstanding performance during the post season. How many pitchers have even won it? And yet alone TWICE! I think Sandy Kofax is the only other....
blownapart100 the award has frequently gone to pitchers, though only Morris and Koufax have won it twice. Only since 2007 has it covered the entire post-season. Before that, it was basically a second World Series MVP, unsanctioned and awarded several weeks after the World Series instead of immediately at the conclusion. Often it was given to the same player as had won the official World Series MVP, but not always. It predated the World Series MVP by 6 years, but since that award came in in 1955, 23 times it has been different than the official World Series MVP while 42 times it was the same.
Today In 1991: Jack Morris tosses 10 shutout innings vs. the Atlanta Braves to lead the Minnesota Twins to a World Series title in an all-time classic Game 7.
I wish baseball would still be played where a starting pitcher can go so deep in the game. Can't even imagine a guy going 10ip and 126 pitches. Insane. Analytics have its place, but it's too much nowadays.
MLB Hi, If you have access to atlanta braves footage library, there is a clip that i would love to see from my childhood. In 1993 TBS did a segment called Atlanta braves ( relive the moments ) special. It was a post game segment about the amazing 1993 season but at the end of it that was a montage of the 1993 season edited to the track of Break through the barrier by Tina turner. I would give anything to see this montage again. Do you know how i could ever see this again??? thanks...

The Braves didn't lose that series, the Twins just won it.
This is game 7...We'll see you tomorrow night, game 6 was just as great as this. 1991 World Series. One of the best Ever
I still can’t believe the Braves didn’t score in the 8th inning. This has to be one of the greatest games in World Series history.
Smoltz was awesome..
Yeah it was a shame he pitched a gem that day as did Jack . Wow! I am a Twins fan but love top notch pitching and that game had it in spades . Wow!
as a lifelong twins fan, this was pure magic...watching jack morris, back in his hometown, throw an absolute gem...still gives me goosebumps...i was a college freshman baseball player in california watching this game 7 with my dorm floor mates...so proud of my hometown club.
It's amazing to me how this game doesn't get more publicity. One of the best pitching duals EVER!
Great video, Thank you. Hats of to Morris and Smoltz. Legend MLB Players.
I was 10 years old and in the 5th grade I didn’t know how special it was till years later but I remember all of us kids talking about it the next day at school!
I feel like Aaron Rodgers will look like John Smoltz in 20 years
Ties with Tom Brady's comeback win in the Super Bowl in 2017 over the Atlanta Falcons. The biggest clutch performances by a pitcher and a QB in Pro sports championship game history. BOTH in "overtime" by the way!
that look on Jack's face @ 4:03, I ALWAYS remembered that as a kid that he didn't approve of Brian Harper's handshake to Lonnie Smith 😄
It appears that the other guy initiated the hand shake.
Great fans! :-)
I met John at the chipotle In secaucus when I was working over there Nicest man on planet earth although I’m a Yankees fan he gave us a hard time in 96 and 99 I respect that
I respected him cuz Atlanta had the best starting rotation back then and he had that look in his eyes that he means buisness
7:46...to the left of Lonnie Smith, heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. I didn't even know he was in attendance for the game.
Greatest World Series ever!
I was 15Years Old When I Saw This WS And This Great Pitching Match Up, Love this WS
The World Series will forever be a very special event! Full of drama and excitement over the years...like this one.
Jack Morris was absolutely lethal on the mound. He was a man among boys. It took me forever to realize how great he was on the hill.
Jack Morris, 7-4 career postseason record. His first postseason loss ever came October 8, 1987, against Juan Berenguer and the Minnesota Twins. How appropriate that he wins the biggest game of his life for the Twins.
Kate Tremaine well Blyleven was the winning pitcher in that game. Berenguer faced the last five batters (striking out four of them) for the save.
If Jack Morris was born in 2015, he would end up with 50 post season wins in his career.
90's Braves pitching rotation was *SICK*
Simply the greatest rotation of all time
Best World Series Ever. That can't be disputed at all.
3:31 classic World Series intro song. Damn, I miss that and the old school and awesome intros they used to have before the games.
That was back when baseball was still great. One of those ‘you remember where you where games’. Sports was so cool back then.
That was one special World Series!
This was presented incredibly well. Shoutout Prospect Productions.
Great video! Best game 7 ever! Thanks for this MLB. Go Twinkies!
The greatest Game 7 is right Twins fan listening on the radio since 1977 at 10 years old. 1987 Game 7 was great too!
I know Morris got some help along the way, but still this is the greatest pitching performance in baseball history. To throw a complete game 10 inning shutout in game 7 of the World Series is simply unbelievable.
Imma say it despite being a Mets fan, 😢 lets go braves. They were Destin to win every 90's world series. Those teams were hot/ very, VERY good
As a Braves fan, the last two Braves teams were better overall than the 90s teams! The 90s ones usually had too weak of offenses, bench players sucked, relievers and closers were unreliable. They were all about the starting pitching in the 90s, and other playoff teams they played were better OVERALL
Congrats Jack on getting in the Hall of Fame!
Long overdue and a travesty it took so long.
I think this was the best World Series of all time.
now a days there is no way in heck that would let jack pitch so long. I still love the classic pitcher duel....
Ill take a pitcher's duel over anything else. Nowadays its not the same
I was there. Best baseball game I've ever seen.
I'm a Minnesota sports fan since 1969. I've had two days of ecstasy since then: Game 7 in 1987 (I was there!) and game 7 in 1991.........
this Jack Morris performance has to be the best individual Game 7 performance of all time
The Best Game on MLB history!! Extraordinary pitchers..
You talk about a nerve wracking game!!!!!!! I had severe knots in my shoulders for two weeks after........
i love reliving this moment in baseball history i just wish i could see it again before i croak. i'm glad i didn't hve to face him in little league when we were kids lol.
To me Jack Morris pitching 10 innings of scoreless ball is the GREATEST game 7 performance in the history of baseball!!!
Smoltz
Morris
the duel of the century
and the stakes are as high as they can get
Big Jack! Greatest Competitor in baseball history! ... Hall of Famer... Biggest clutch pitching performance in Game 7 World Series history. There was NO WAY the manager was going to take him out of the game! NO WAY! What a competitor.
And Y Absolutely.
The way Jack Morris pitches makes my shoulder hurt lol it seems like he throws so hard!
class act. John Smoltz. I miss those great Braves teams of the 90s
I was a freshman in High School When I Watched This World Series and I’m A White Sox Fan, But I’m A Huge Baseball Fan And I Love World Series Baseball
As a twins fan I absolutely love this game
More of these please
Jack Morris for the Twins was what Kawhi Leonard was for the Raptors.
Perfect comparison! Both veteran leaders who had already experienced individual and team success with another team, but came over for 1 season and delivered on the biggest stage
As a Braves fan, gotta tip your hat to Jack Morris…performances like that will never happen again
Yeah jack Morris smoltz greatest pitching duel ever
Best World Series ever. Made me a lifetime fan of the game
What a moment, as a kid I’ve met Gene Larking it’s crazy to know how important he is.
Excelente Serie Mundial, yo iba con Braves, fueron impresionantes por su perseverancia y lucha en 1991 y es una de las mejores SM de todos los tiempos
5:56 Was that Ron Gant that got caught looking? I'm sure it was just because Jack was pumped but the way he stared him down after striking him out, made it look like he really disliked him.
Let's be honest. This game is what brought Jack Morris into the Hall of Fame
Jack Morris what a workhorse he made love the tigers rise with sparky
Today In 1991: Jack Morris tosses 10 shutout innings vs. the Atlanta Braves to lead the Minnesota Twins to a World Series title in an all-time classic Game 7.
I wish baseball would still be played where a starting pitcher can go so deep in the game. Can't even imagine a guy going 10ip and 126 pitches. Insane. Analytics have its place, but it's too much nowadays.
Amazing series!
Forget 1975, This was the best World Series ever
2 Hall of Famer's battling it out. Gold.
Do you know how i could ever see this again??? thanks...
ruclips.net/video/WKhlIGl4xGA/видео.html
Chris Starr hi. the video in the link you provided is only part one of the series. the montage that im talking about would be like part 6 or 7 of those clips but they arent on there. shouldnt there be like some huge video library vault that the mlb has with footage from all time baseball?
