  • Van Nuys (VNY) is a medium-sized, primarily business and general aviation airport located in the city of Van Nuys, California. It is situated six miles west of the Hollywood Burbank Airport, and 15 miles north of Los Angeles International airport. VNY has its own Class Delta airspace which underlies the Burbank Class Charlie, and is just north of the Los Angeles Class Bravo. Pilots intending to fly to Van Nuys need to be sure they understand the rules and requirements to operate in this type of environment.
Visit www.faa.gov/vny for supplemental "pilot handbook" information on this airport including airport-specific cautions, information local controllers want pilots to know, airport communications, airspace details and other preflight planning resources.
1:03 - The traffic mix and volume of traffic
1:36 - The runway configuration: two closely spaced parallel runways with staggered thresholds
2:13 - Awareness of several traffic and airspace issues. Pilots should have familiarity with the VFR reporting points found on the VFR sectional to help the tower with traffic sequencing. They also use reporting points not found on the sectional chart.
2:49 - Proximity to the smaller Whiteman Airport and its associated Class Delta airspace and things to be aware of when flying to VNY.
4:04 - Final approach course for the Burbank Runway 8 arrival crosses directly over VNY
4:50 - When operating an aircraft on the surface at Van Nuys, accurate position reports to the Tower or Ground control are essential.
6:18 - Surface areas at VNY that are tower non-visibility areas, and other surface operations tips.
7:42 - Once in the run-up area and a run-up is complete, contact the tower for take-off clearance. There is no need to call ground first.
8:02 - Parallel traffic hazard: fly runway heading-do not drift off centerline.
    8:23 - Noise sensitivity.
To address wrong surface events where an aircraft lines up to or lands on the incorrect runway, taxiway, or airport, the FAA released Arrival Alert Notices (AAN) at various airports with a history of misalignment risk. View the VNY Arrival Alert Notice here: www.faa.gov/ai...
The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines them with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at www.faa.gov/Fr...
This video is informational only and does not replace the pilot’s responsibility to conduct required pre-flight planning in accordance with FAR 91.103.

This is a great series, Situational awareness is key and understanding and navigating in complex environments bears review and the wise pilot will take notes. Note to FAA: find a way to link these videos via FLTPlan, Foreflight, Garmin Pilot, or other tablet based software. One click on the airport info tab during preflight would contain the links.

Please be brave and ask for help if you’re not familiar with the run way. It’s how you make your clearance!

Great info; useful for people looking at houses to buy to avoid one directly under an approach or take off area.

Not in LA. They buy homes underneath the air traffic and sue to close the airport

My boyfriend was pilot in the military and commercial airplane. He said Van Nuys Airport is not difficult the take off and landing.

It's always been a zoo, several times holding title of THE busiest GA in the country - 6.53nm west of commercial traffic at KBUR. Long Beach is a close second with not even half the flight schools

Great information on this video, i’m sure it will be very helpful.
I’d note also that pattern altitudes are different (2,000 for 16R and 1,800 for 16L) due to BUR class C.
Additional ground references are the 118 fwy (extended downwinds for 16) and 405 fwy (left traffic for 16)
